4th Time this year

I have had 4 short stays this year in a campervan and used the site as a base for mountain biking. I have to say the staff, site, location, facilities and cleanliness are spot on. I honestly don't know where some of the guests who stay here and knock it must stay normally, there must be some Mayfair Hotel campsite equivalents that I have not read about yet for around £20 a night so please advise if you are reading this and are one of them! As for the noisy leaf blowers (really), then I would rather that than trample leaves throughout my temporary accommodation for the length of my stay and am surprised the colour of the leaves don't upset some either. Personally I cannot wait to return and suggest those who don't approve, stick to their preferred sites as it gives me more chance of securing a booking at this fantastic site.

Lovely

The site is clean, well maintained, well staffed and very peaceful. It is definitely a "Go To" for the future. My only issue was that I had to buy an aerial cable for the TV due to bad/no signal which is fair enough and expected; however the cable that I bought was not made properly and I had to spend time putting the connections on properly. It worked after this with no issues at all. Can I suggest that the cables are either checked when made or buy them in from a retailer?

Beautiful site marred by leaf blowers

Just spent three nights at this site as my husband and a group of friends were planning to walk The Old Man of Coniston. We had a lovely welcome and were told to pick our pitch. We drove around and decided on a pitch on a slightly more open area quite near the site entrance - it’s a very steep walk up from the bottom of the site. The site is beautiful and perfectly placed to walk into Coniston. We remarked particularly on how peaceful the site was. We spent most of Saturday in Coniston but were back on site later in the afternoon and were treated to the constant noise of leaf blowers which seemed to go on and on. Next day, my husband went off to do his walk. The weather was dreadful so I was in our motorhome all day. First surprise was going into the showers to find several members of staff (including a male) painting ceiling tiles. ‘Go ahead’ they said but it was discomfiting to be in a shower with people on step ladders all around. However, the showers were brilliant. Later though the dreaded leaf blowers started up again and continued for most of the day. At one point, someone was blowing the leaves from the corner of one of the warden pitches (the grass and the hedge!) for ages. What was the point? It’s Autumn - the noise was totally intrusive and unnecessary. I’m guessing someone will refer to Health & Safety but to go to that extreme is ridiculous. I would love to come back and Autumn is a perfect time for us but not if we have to put up with that noise if we wish to stay on site during the day.

Peaceful, spacious and clean

We spent 2 nights here at the end of September 2019. It was amazingly quiet, even though it wasn’t empty. No light pollution, the sound of owls being the only nighttime noise. The washrooms were extremely clean and new. Individual sink cubicles, proper showers (like you’d have at home) not push button, one temperature jobs. Good washing up facilities - again, proper taps. All in all a very pleasant experience. Easy flat walk into Coniston

Lovely site, spoilt in autumn by noisy leaf blowers for much of the daytime

Very nice site, set in woodland. Facilities good, staff welcoming and helpful. Dog walking excellent, both in the trees and down to Coniston Water. Good facilities nearby, especially in Coniston village. Two minor niggles......not many level pitches available (site is on a hillside), and as you are inevitably parked under trees, in autumn sleeping can be a little tricky with water dropping onto your caravan from the trees, as well as the inevitable rain - 80inches a year. One major niggle if you like to be in your caravan during any part of autumn days.....the staff come round with motorised back-pack leaf blowers every day, and after the first couple of hours the constant lawnmower-like noise begins to get on our nerves. Do they really need to use them for so much of EVERY day. I would come back here, just not in autumn.

OUR FAVOURITE SITE

Love this site, so welcoming and friendly. It's set in National Trust Woodland and has the get back to nature feel with birds and squirrels, and at night owls hooting. We live in rural Cornwall which is a lovely county in itself, but Coniston and the Lakes are just stunning. Although the site is big it doesn't feel that way as the pitches are in little enclosures. The site facilities are always clean and there's plenty of them. The wardens are very helpful and nothing is to much trouble. You can walk to Coniston through the site, it's a lovely walk with the lake on the right hand side and gorgeous views. Trips on the Steam Ship Gondola go from Coniston as does the 505 bus service which takes you to Hawkshead Where you can get the Mountain Goat minibus to Beatrix Potters house Hilltop, or carry on to Ambleside or Windermere. Coniston itself is very pretty. As previous reviewers have mentioned the roads are twisty and narrow but this is the Lake District the roads are part of its charm. This year was our second visit, we love this site and all it offers and will definitely be returning. On our next visit we'll hire a small car to save taking our Motorhome off site. Enterprise do a discount for Club Members.

Quiet site but needs updating

I stayed here in September for 5 nights. My brother rented a glamping lodge. I found quite a private pitch where I hadn’t any other caravans in front of me. The site is set in the woods so there isn’t really much of a view. At night you can hear the owls hooting away. It is a short walk down to the lake and an excellent path that leads to the village of Coniston. There is a pub a short walk away that sells lovely food and beers with friendly staff. There are numerous hills and walks on the doorstep and the town of Ambleside is a 20 minute drive away. The road leading to the site is quite twisty and narrow in places. The site itself was pretty easy to access and park up with the caravan. The facilities at the site are locked and you are issued a key. This is because members of the public are allowed to walk through the site and have apparently been using the facilities. The facilities are in need of updating and felt a bit grubby with old looking tiled floors and black mouldy stains on the ceiling. When I was there I found one of the two hairdryers not to be working. Incidentally it was the same down at the other toilet block. Also the one and only hand wash dispenser was empty at 10am. The general look of the site was that it needed updating. Wood around the water and refuse areas looked old and dirty. I also saw dog poo on a number of occasions.

Lovely Sept break 19-22 (midweek)

A lot has been said already about Coniston Coppice, we stayed there for two nights last week (using our free night voucher too). It was our first time on a club site so we were a little apprehensive... (needn’t have been). After arriving on Thursday, from the south (the Lakes roads can be a bit scary), we found the site easily. The warden Michael was super helpful when I explained we were newbies. We chose our own pitch, and yes levelling blocks are needed (probably for most) ...but not a problem. We didn’t have a coax lead and our satellite dish for TV didn’t work under the trees but we have dvds, so that was a small issue as we were glad of the shade to keep our motorhome cool for our pooch. The walk through the site down to the Lake took less than 5 mins and oh boy were we lucky with the weather ! Very pretty flat walk on a made up path to Coniston , a cruise on the Lake (doggie allowed too), and a wander back took the best part of one day with a mooch around Coniston too.I think going midweek and out of school hols was a good idea as everywhere was so peaceful, it was certainly getting busier on the Sat morning as we left. There is a food van on site and Friday night fish and chips were amazing ! Tip: ensure you pop up during the day and write your order on a notepad on the counter. Thanks to the lovely lady in the caravan in our little glade who showed us where the water and waste point were as we had driven straight past most of them without noticing ! We will certainly go back here.

Recent stay

We stayed in mid September in a compact motorhome and enjoyed our visit and would stay here again. It's a large site but the pitches are well spread out amongst the trees so it doesn't feel too big. We found a pitch on the edge of the site recommended by one of the wardens which felt more like wild camping with views into the woods and owls hooting at night. You can walk in to Coniston village either by the lower route near the lake or out of the top of the site along the old railway line. There is also a walk in the other direction to the village of Torver which has a couple of pubs.
