Commons wood short stay review

We have just returned from Commons wood site. We were visiting family nearby. Friendly and helpful welcome on arrival. Security barrier with fob provided. The site is adjacent to a large hospital but once on site this is not a problem. On the other side is a golf club where an outdoor celebration was taking place but this ended at around 10pm. We are used to peace and quiet so the noise of overhead aircraft was noticeable for us ( Luton airport). Of course when you weigh this up against the fact that this site is within close proximity of the capital and has all the other good aspects and facilities that you would expect from the Caravan club then don't be put off. I would definitely return to use for a purpose as in a visit to family or the capital city. The site has a large caravan storage area which may be relevant to your situation. Overall the site surved our purpose and we enjoyed our stay.

A trip to London

Really easy to get into London from here.  Bus to Hatfield station then train to King's Cross.  Hatfield House was brilliant and well worth a visit as its so close by, with wonderful walks too. Also recommend a trip to beautiful St Albans. The site was fine, though apart from booking in we didn't disturb the staff at all as they don't have a 'shop' and there was nothing we needed from them.   There are a few shops about 5 mins away for papers etc.   The showers at Commons Wood, however,  are awful.  So bad in fact that it was easier to have a strip wash and use a jug for my hair.  I could dribble more water! We enjoyed the break and would certainly use the site again if wanting to visit London and the area.

Aircraft noise

Nice looking site, easily accessed. Every thing is clean, but the toilet facilities need an upgrade. There are many aircraft passing overhead, it seems like you get Luton & Stanstead traffic , it can be a bit distracting at times. I would call this a "working site" as has been said in previous reviews, there were a lot of non holiday people on site. But overall a very nice site worth staying at, especially if you want to visit the big city.

Good Enough Site

We are just back from staying at Commons Wood.  It's a great location for London hence the reason some of the site was occupied by workmen and office workers which meant the site had not as much atmosphere.  Toilets were clean but disabled shower must be the worst shower I have ever encountered - the water pressure was non existent which meant I was unable to wash my hair.  I would stay there again only if the showers were upgraded or I was just passing through.  It's a shame as site was quite nice.

Disgusted at Treatment

I am disgusted at the way I was treated at this site. I have stayed at this site many many time in the last 10 years. The Wardens have always been friendly and helpful. Last visit was a completely different story. Informed I was to be allocated a pitch. I tried to explain that my motorhome was within the 8.5m length stipulated on the site guide. I agree it looks big due to the height, but is within the site specified length. In reality it was probably shorter than some of the twin axle caravans on the grass and hard standing. There was no negotiations to be had. The female warden was rude and obtrusive, but always finished with "Sir" to remain in compliance with CC rules. In 25 years of being a member I have never been treated in such a manner. At the very least I would have expected the male warden who was drinking tea in the back room to come out and offer to have a look round and find a compromise. The pitch I was instructed I must use had low hanging branches and was not acceptable. Why should I pay money for a pitch that was clearly substandard when many others were available. I was so disgusted I handed back the barrier key and left the site forfeiting the nights fee I had paid. I drove to a near-by Camping and Caravanning Club site without a booking and it was complete polar opposites to the way in which I was treated at Common Woods. I was welcomed in and the warden admired my new motorhome and was asked where I would like to pitch showing me all the suitable pitches available. I spend 6 month a year on CC Sites and have been on almost every site on the network. I have never been treated like I was at this site anywhere. The wardens at this site need to remember they work for the club, the club which we the members own. I appreciate we need to keep the site and members safe but in this case there was clearly a solution, but they were not prepared to compromise in any way, which is a major failing in both there standard of work and the way in which they have been trained. I have written to the club chairman about this incident as writing to general managers gives nothing but a standard HSE type reply. The Chairman is elected and not employed so I hope he looks into this matter on my behalf. It may benefit others but shall have no effect on me as I will not return to this site with the current wardens in charge. I did seriously consider cancelling my membership, but in reality the club have some fabulous people working for them and I have had many a friendly chat with wardens up and down the network and some I am on first name terms with so I will not let a pair of bad apples spoil my enjoyment. I really hope the read this and take note and perhaps look at their current skill set and look at resolving the issues they have.

Excellent location

Used this site as we were going to London to watch a show. Facilities clean and pitches were a good size. An excellent location to explore London. We would use this site again when next visiting the Capital.

Easy to get to

We've stayed at the Commons Wood site on several occasions both as a couple and with our grandchildren. However this time though the site was beautifully kept and the facilities were always clean there was no internet access should anyone want it and the wardens didn't know when this would be fixed and the disabled facilities weren't up to standard. The main problem being the door lock was broken and I was left feeling quite vulnerable as there didn't appear to be a way for help to get to you should you have a need to pull the red cord. Again the wardens didn't seem to know when this would be repaired. We also found the wardens to be very 'straight faced and unfriendly'. This won't put us off visiting the site as it's perfectly placed when visiting our daughter and on the whole a pleasant place to stay.
