Feeling its age?

We used this site since Buncefield closed as it is nearest to family. The hard standing pitch available was muddy and overgrown to the point we decided not to pitch awning. Aware that it was on the edge under the trees, but even so, no proper maintenance has been carried out for a while on any of these pitches. Did not use the shower block so can't comment on that. For a few overnights it is ok, but would not like to spend more time there.

needs an update

We stayed at this site to enable easy access for a function in St Albans, the site was clean & tidy, and the wardens were helpful, however they do there best with a site that is in need of some refurbishment, cracked sinks in the block and some outer hardstandings are in very poor condtion, this is not what we expect from the CC. The dissapointing bit is the thoughtless people who use the site as a base whilst presumably working, which is acceptable as long as they think of others, we were disturbed on 3 occassions/mornings very early in the morning with car doors banging and driving off noisly to 'work' ! if you intend to go off early, leave your car at the car spaces on site near the barriers, so as to keep disturbance to a minimum.

Great potential

Site with huge potential - easy access, good local bus service, great London rail link, friendly wardens and open throughout the year. However neglected appearance of half site, worst we've seen on network. We were lucky with great pitch, overlooking grassy central area but elsewhere weed covered pitches; overhanging trees and muddy accomodation roads, obviously not seen maintenance for some time. Wash block fine, but surely it must be relatively easy to improve the wholly inadequate shower pressures? - internet access. On line complaints re both already numerous - so come on Caravan Club make this site what it deserves to be.

Rest Halt

Used Commons Wood for a one night stop on the way back from a trip to France this week. The staff were very friendly the guy who booked us in was very helpful as we had not booked and he went out of his way to help make sure we were sorted so thank you for that sorry I did not get your name. The other 2 members of staff I spoke to were also friendly and that helps make any site better. Nice to wake up and see the local grey squirrels getting ready for winter by hiding their nuts in the grass on the site. On the down side the showers were very under powered with not much water pressure, the block was very clean so staff are not to blame it just needs updating. Will use site again but might shower in van next time.

Very Convenient

We regularly use this site to visit our Granddaughter. It is easy to get to from the A1. It has all we need for a 4 - 6 night stop as we are pretty self contained. it is good to see that the TV sockets have been updated as we appreciate having access to a good quality signal

A pleasant overnight stay

We spent one night here in our motorhome. It was clean, the site was well maintained, it was quiet and we had no problems other than not having a TV signal. We probably wouldn't stay for more than one night as we have young children and there weren't any facilities for them and the site was a bit too quiet for our noisy little rabble but we would book the site again for an overnight stay.

Unkempt

This is not a 'holiday-makers' site. It is full of workers who leave their caravans empty over the weekend. Some of them look as if they have been there for months with the result that the site looks and feels untidy and unkempt. It is poorly designed and people do cut through others' pitches to go to and from the toilet block which incidentally does have poor shower pressure. Overall, a very disappointing site - not what we expect a Caravan Club site to be.

Not one of our favourite CC sites

We used this site for the first time as a 3 night stopover on our way home from the south coast. We have previously used Wyatts Covert (many times) and Ashridge. We were greeted with the words "as you're early you'll be able to have a hardstanding as most arrivals today will have to be put on grass". Arrival time at this site is 12 noon and we arrived after this time having planned our journey accordingly. We hoped this was the warden trying to be funny so we gave him the benefit of the doubt but a more friendly welcome would have been appreciated. However, this was one of the most disappointing sites of the very many we have visited on the Club's network. As previously stated in other reviews the shower pressure was very poor, many hardstandings were covered in weeds and there was a general feeling that things were not up to usual CC standards. The noise on the site was virtually constant - traffic and aircraft were expected being close to London but tractors and grass mowing all added to the general clamour. This was exacerbated by one warden using a leafblower which put leaves into piles for the wind to then blow them about again - a complete waste of time !! Early mornings were also disturbed due to people going off to work, obviously using the site for this purpose. We also had people cutting through our pitch walking very close to our caravan so they could save themselves a few yards walking to the facility block - we were the end pitch right by the roadway! Although probably a great location for visiting London this is not a site we will be rushing to return to.

I JUST WONDERED...

Would it be possible for the warden to turn the tractor off whilst cleaning a service point to lessen the noise?  I've been twice in recent weeks and both Sunday mornings the tractor has been left running for 15-20 mins outside my motorhome whilst - a very good job is made - cleaning / emptying bins. Also it's not very 'green' to leave it running. I visit the site a few times each year and it is in a great position for London or nearer towns. I didn't use the shower block this time so things may have changed but, last time, an upgrade was way overdue. Thanks.

Commons wood short stay review

We have just returned from Commons wood site. We were visiting family nearby. Friendly and helpful welcome on arrival. Security barrier with fob provided. The site is adjacent to a large hospital but once on site this is not a problem. On the other side is a golf club where an outdoor celebration was taking place but this ended at around 10pm. We are used to peace and quiet so the noise of overhead aircraft was noticeable for us ( Luton airport). Of course when you weigh this up against the fact that this site is within close proximity of the capital and has all the other good aspects and facilities that you would expect from the Caravan club then don't be put off. I would definitely return to use for a purpose as in a visit to family or the capital city. The site has a large caravan storage area which may be relevant to your situation. Overall the site surved our purpose and we enjoyed our stay.
