Having never been to the site before I took a good look at the site pictures. It looked lovely with the grass pitches next to the hedge. Please update your records. We were very disappointed to find all the lovely grass pitches by the hedges had been turned into hard standing. We are certainly not fans of hard standing. It ruins you chairs and tables. Not suitable for our young grandchildren who stumble on it grazing their knees. We ended up shoe-horned on grass far to close to the chemical toilet disposal. Not what you want to see while eating. The positives of the site are it's close to cheddar, very nice wardens who work very hard to keep the site clean and tidy. The baby room was very pretty and a pleasure to use. Unfortunately as we dislike hard standing we will not return to the site
Stayed for five nights over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. The first word of advice is to plan your route, don't rely particularly on Google Maps unless your settings can take into account that you are towing. Stick to the main A roads and you'll be fine.
Beautiful setting within the town of Cheddar, close enough to walk to the local shops, Tesco Express and Sainsbury's. Take care if walking with small children, push chairs or dogs as the road is narrow and without a foot path in some areas.
Upon arrival we received a friendly welcome and were quickly and efficiently checked in. Everything was explained thoroughly and concisely. We had a choice of pitches and chose No 56, set in the corner, with a short walk to the shower block and waste area. It supplied a spacious plot for our two berth caravan and awning.
What strikes you is the well maintained area, the grass and hedges are perfectly manicured. The cleanliness of the service areas including shower block and waste disposal area deserve special mention and praise. Not once during our stay did we see anything less than spotless conditions. The wardens work as a well oiled machine, they clearly have a well disciplined work schedule which is evident and results in a great experience for the camper.
The Gorge/Wookey Hole are obvious tourist hot spots but we found the ride to Axbridge and the walk around Cheddar Reservoir much more appealing. Wells is beautiful, we visited twice. Getting anywhere on the roads around the area is testing, the 8 mile drive to Wells will take well over 20 minutes and although it's only 24 miles to Bath it will take you over an hour on a roller coaster journey.
The site itself deserves top marks! Reviewing our stay we have to say that there was not one criticism. However, we found the 'area' with a few exceptions a little under-whelming. A site we would definitely use again if we found ourselves in the area but wouldn't rush back to the region.
Site not difficult to find as long as you follow the club’s directions, and have a look on Google Maps Streetview in advance. We’d never ever rely purely on a satnav, especially when towing. Entrance road is narrow over the whole length, with blind bend, so on no account ever arrive early. The first area of roadway, outside the football club entrance, and just off the main road, is very rough and desperately needs resurfacing.
The wardens are very friendly and helpful, and the facilities are very clean.
For us the worse aspect of the site was the playing of Radio 2 in the toilets/showers – we found this irritating. Thankfully it had not been extended to the washing up area (as some sites have done), where it would kill conversation dead and rob us of the wonderful exchange of advice and tips with other members that we’ve enjoyed on so many other sites. Although Radio 2 is popular with many, it is not universally so. Best to have nothing at all, like most sites, then no one is offended. I’ve never seen a site get a bad review due to lack of radio.
Many first-time visitors to the site are likely to want to walk into Cheddar and to the gorge. They may do this soon after arrival, perhaps seeking a meal or shopping after a long journey. The obvious route, along the main road is neither pleasant nor safe due to narrowness, heavy traffic including HGVs and lack of footway – as we discovered. There is a pleasant safe route, but the only advice on this is on the wall in the information room, and lost amongst all the other stuff. It is also quite sketchy, lacks a map and fails to emphasise the safety issues. It is vital that this is offered to all when first arriving on site, and also there should be a reminder on the gateway. We were told by one local that pedestrians have indeed been hit by vehicles on the main road.
We arrived Wednesday 22nd May and departed two days later, so cannot comment on potential noise from the football ground.
We found this a useful stop off on our return home from Cornwall, and it is ideally situated for Cheddar Gorge. It could be a good site if the safety, road surface and radio issues are addressed, but as it stands we cannot give it a strong recommendation.
Just returned from a 4 night stay at Cheddar, our first to this site.
The site is ideal for exploring the Mendips, it is a perfect size for us, being not too big. Cheddar village itself is a short walk away and the gorge is within a 15 minute walk. Fantastic butchers shop in Cheddar village too.
The site facilities are excellent, they were clean and everything worked. The only negative (and I`m being picky here...) is the size of the dish-wash area, it`s a bit snug.
The wardens were very friendly and helpful and the site was always kept immaculate.
Wells is definitely worth a visit, as is Glastonbury.
We will visit this lovely little site again!
Great little campsite extremely close to the strawberry line cycle trail, which is quite easy to ride. This trail takes you through a lovely medieval village and through to the Thatchers Cider shop (2 mins further on than the restaurant). Here you can enjoy some of the famous somerset tipple and hopefully get home in one piece. Cheddar gorge and all it's restaurants and pubs a 10 minute walk up the hill.
Don't forget to get all your meat/ cheese/ Pasties/Pies/ sundries from the local butchers come deli in the small town of cheddar. It's an exceptional shop and the prices are a third of the prices in the Gorge. All the locals shop here.
This site never ceases to impress from the warm friendly reception to the very well kept site.toilets and showers always spotless and lovely hit water.Cheddar itself is a lovely location with loads to do and see.If your a keen cyclist then the strawberry line from cheddar to Hatton is a must, and 95% off road.We always stop in Sandford at the Thatchers cider factory for lovely food and a nice pint of cider. We will always return on our way out of or back to Cornwall
First time visit to this site. Will definitely be visiting again. This is an exceptionally clean, helpful staff and well situated site, excellent dog walk. Only fault needs better signage as post code takes you into new housing estate if you are travelling from Wells
This site is immaculate and the wardens clearly spend a lot of time keeping the site well tended. The wardens are welcoming and friendly, the site just looks so neat and tidy and the toilet block is cleaned to a high standard. This site is a great example of how good CAMC sites can be.
In the vicinity Cheddar village can be quite touristy but the local church adds a lot of rural charm with its bells (but they can be intrusive). You can walk to the village away from the main road (and as the latter doesn’t have footpaths for long stretches it is best avoided) and there is a Medium sized Sainsbury’s and a Tesco Express within a 5-10 minute walk.
Wells is worth a visit - if only for the Hot Fuzz connection - but parking can be a bit of an issue in high season.
I only wish it was closer to my home!
All we wanted was a short get away for bank holiday and within easy reach of home (50 miles).
Site exceeded our expectations. Very close to Cheddar village and shops. Took our bikes and rode the Strawberry Line as far as Sandiford and Thatcher's Cider factory. A pleasant and not difficult ride.
Wardens really are very customer focused and take time to welcome visitors. Probably the best I have met so far. Well done to Jo Malcolm and the team.
Cheddar village is a small place with a touristy feel. Shop around for what ever it is you are looking for as typically prices are targeted at tourists. Plenty places to eat and drink, all within walking distance.
Small and friendly. Down side are the limited shower and toilet facilities, which are spotlessly clean and well maintained. :-)
You can walk from this site more or less off road into Cheddar village. From here you can get the bus to Wells and to Weston Super Mare.
Also close to the Strawberry Line cycle way.
Facilities are small (only 4 shower cubicles for quite a large site) but very clean.
Staff very friendly and helpful
