Peaceful Site, Beautiful Area

We booked this site at the last minute as a 2 night stopover south, but we will be back.  It was nearly fully booked, we got one of the last pitches on the 2nd night stay. Wardens were great from calling us to check we were OK and on our way when we didn't turn up on the 2-4pm slot as booked.  We were running late, had to stop for a sleep at a service station for an hour.  We arrived 1830, not a problem, still a nice friendly welcome and she had pre-reserved a very good pitch for us to save time. Excellent private walking access onto Chatsworth estate grounds.  Close to Bakewell, which is a charming town. Site is immaculate and well managed, it is however a busy and popular site. Don't follow your sat ab to get here, follow the cc directions. We'll be back in the future.

Good site

We enjoyed the location of the site close to many attractions but it would have been better if we had been able to enjoyed the overhead sun. We love trees but we like daylight during the day. We would certainly return if I the trees are trimmed. Staff were well informed and very helpful.

Club rules

Having been  members for 30 years and visited this site many times, I never fail to be amazed at the number of members whose site reviews say that they " accidentally "  arrived early only to be told they would have to wait to pitch. The caravan club issues a handbook and a website that clearly states the arrival time for each site. If you are able to use the handbook or Internet to book your site you should be able to read the arrival times. Why do all the early arrivers always plead that they are treated unfairly and want the rules to be bent for them. If the rules can be bent for them they can be bent for everyone and then there is no point in having rules. I wish people would review the site and not use it to complain about about how unfairly they have been treated.

Pretty good

Stayed here for a week recently. Adhered to to 1pm check in rule and upon arrival could see the reason for it. Staff very helpful. Had a services pitch and was suprised to see it had a chemical disposal drain on the pitch, very good. Great access to surrounding area and Chatsworth house well worth the visit, but Hadfon Hall was our personal favourite and lunch in the restaurant not only very well priced but terrific food. The farm shop in chatsworth is pricey but probably the best I have been to. Back to the site, it seemed to change from weekday to weekend. Midweek facilities clean etc, come Friday Saturday, dirt left around the sinks and washrooms, mess left in toilets (gents). Is this because suddenly kids were on site? I don't know, but if so can parents just watch what the kids get up to. It does after all affect everybody. And it's not always someone else's job to clear up after you.

Also frustrated with booking in..

Unwittingly I arrived early. Unaware of the 1pm checkin time, I arrived at 12 to be told I had passed three signs informing me of this fact.I may well have done, but, as I explained, I was unaware of this exception to the usual check in time. I was made to wait at the entrance for over an hour, despite the pitch that I wanted to go on being vacant and within 100 yards. No interest in cooperating with that fact. The wardens attitude being 'I am dammed if I do and dammed if I don't'. No vans left in the next hour and there were over 20 spaces available. We were booked for 3 nights. We had to abandon the site after two, despite moving to another pitch, due to flooding. I asked for a refund of the last night - no you have to give 72 hours notice to do that. Obviously, I couldn't give notice of heavy rain and flooding. I do think that the club is getting more and more uncooperative with it's members, I am sure that wardens get a hard time from us, but rules can be flexible surely, within reason. Don't intend staying there again..

Another Return

I always enjoy returning to this site and do so 3-4 times a year to enjoy the surroundings throughout the seasons. There is something about entering the park just after dawn, when all is quiet (bar the pheasant morning chorus) and seeing antlers above the mist. As with other sites ones experience can be influenced by the site wardens and the present group were excellent in their approach and professionalism. The pitches are of a good size and there are lots of pitch options rather than seeing everyone in a regimented row. The facilities were as one would expect and well maintained. Some complain about dogs on the sites and if their owners are not responsible that is justified but I have found the vast majority of dog owners to be highly responsible (even picking up in the park). It would be equally responsible for those few leaving the toilets in a poorly state to be equally responsible for their actions, as they would at home and that is no reflection on the wardens who try to ensure everywhere is clean. The site is central for exploring the area whether that be on foot or vechicle to areas such as Castleton/Bakewell etc. I shall be back at Christmas.

Back again

Beautiful site - shame about the rain, though not much the wardens can do about that! Arrived on 19 June - slight delay coming into the site because of the number of people arriving so totally understandable at this time of the year. Booking in process easy as usual. Staff very friendly and efficient. Walked down to Baslow in the evening for a meal at the Wheatsheaf - huge portions and couldn't finish mine though the other half managed an enormous slice of delicious red velvet cheesecake. Visited the club reception this morning. No Marmite!!! when will they learn... ;-) Ducks aplenty, Hoping the sun will come out to make the most of the beautiful countryside around here as staying for a few days. Lovely to see the place with the leaves out (this is our third visit - previously been too early in the year to get the full beauty). No doubt will be back again.

Site Standards

It appears that the number of dogs on sites has increased in recent years. Even though rules are in place concerning dog fouling, the use of extending leads is undermining these rules. Dogs were seen urinating on fire hydrants, site posts etc, and allowed to foul empty pitches even though they were on the extended lead in the view of the owner/s. The time has come for the club to review the use of these leads on club sites until a recognised dog exercising area is reached. In addition, contaminated areas should be cleaned thoroughly, to allow safe use by families. Has the time come to limit the number of dogs per caravan or total on site at any one time? I stress that we are dog lovers but see a problem for users of club sites.

Frustrated at staff

The site wardens are strick re time to enter site. Causing chaos on road when entering as they will not let anyone in til dead on 1pm, site is quiet, & on a whole even though strick rules quite nice very close to Chatsworth house and central to a few towns Bakewell & Chesterfield. Facilities are well maintained. And always clean well worth a visit but don't arrive before 1pm to avoid chaos !
