Greatr site

Just spent a couple of days on this wonderful site and will certainly use again. The new toilet block is great and the toilets are spotless. The wardens were very friendly and helpful and its a lovely site. Good for dogs too as they have a shower facility for them, so you can clean your dogs if they get muddy as ours did. Great area for walking. Highly recommend this site.

christmas lights visit

another excellent visit to this site, especially with the Christmas lights in Castleton (and on the site), the new facilities are excellent ,staff friendly ,location perfect. If visiting during the Christmas period we would highly recommend a visit to the church to see the Christmas Tree display. We will definitely return to this site.

Fabulous

We have just returned from a fabulous few days at the Castleton site. We have been before and it is now better than ever. I think some of the recent reviews are a little unfair and certainly not what we experienced. The shower block was wonderfully warm and clean. The dog walk is tiny and it would be too dangerous for dogs to be let off the lead as it is adjacent to the main road. There are so many lovely walks from the site that the 'dog walk' is not really necessary at all. Castleton had a wonderful festive feel and the wardens had decorated the site. We were surprised to find everything open off-season in the village. The icing on the cake was the fantastic wood fired pizza van which came on the Friday night and waking up to snow on our last day. A wonderful start to the festive season.

Impessive improvements but!

Been many times always enjoyable experience. Recent improvements very impressive. Just require a couple more. Some of exterior fencing falling down , surely this should have been done during refit? Brilliant drying room could do with key pad security as is on Coniston & Hawes sites. We also had a number of power outs, unsure if site wiring at fault or members not understanding that you cannot arrive and switch all electrics on at once causing trips to blow! Suspect BOTH.

first visit

Lovely site. Very quiet despite being on a main rd.Club direction's perfect and easy to follow no problems with country lanes as for the A6 well nightmare! Fantastic site if you like walking as we do.Cannot comment on the bus service as we didn't use it. Modernisation of the toilet block is nice but no different to any other site that was done up several years ago. Will definitely visit again.

Disappointed after such a lengthy refurbishment

Usually visit this site as our last trip of the year. Castleton has plenty of interest and the area is good for walks. After being out of use for "refurbishment" for most of the year, we expected more visible evidence of the work done. I agree the new toilet facilities are to a high standard, I could not understand however what use the VERY narrow plank seat was in the mens showers, it was too narrow to sit on while getting dry, too narrow to stand anything on whilst showering. Also we usually have a porch awning at this time of year to protect against bad weather, the choice of white peg pitches (the ones that allowed awnings ) was very limited making it impossible for friends to park on adjacent pitches, The condition of the gravel hard standing deteriorated very quickly after a rainfall and we were having to walk through mud to simply get onto the tarmac road.

disappointed this time !

have visited this site several times in the past ,first time since its makeover ! were not impressed with the serviced pitch as it was very tight for space and there were a lot nicer standard pitches . staff not very welcoming as we were early arriving ( around 11.15 ) even though the site was probably half empty on our arrival made us wait 45 minutes until the queue of arrivals was out onto the road this in our view was unnecessary . I think the warden' patrolling' the site thought he was a prison officer !!! and cant understand why they have a dog walk area in which you have to keep them on a lead !!!!! I thought the idea was to give them a run in this area as they have to be on the lead AT ALL TIMES, even when your in the awning apparently ! as we got ' told off ' because she wandered outside the door for a split second ! other than that had a great time in castleton :-)

Better for its refresh

I've never been impressed with the busy village of Castleton with its plethora of gift shops and eateries. The area itself is a walkers paradise though and it is no surprise to see so many on site. There are walks along the Hope Valley which are relatively flat but the off road tracks can get muddy and it is sheep rearing country so dogs on lead. There is a bus service but ignore the stops on the closed MamTor road! Access through Castleton for wheelchair users was hampered by advertising boards on pavements and retail deliveries - three pubs getting their beer at the same time! Site was easy to find and Reception run efficiently. Motorhome service point has the open grate. Shame the MSP is on a slight slope so not all tanks will fully drain. Also, you face the possibility of having to access the MSP when on site by going around the one way system including through two barriers unless you cheat and reverse over a short distance. Toilet block immaculate but the decor is the old style green. No sign of colours reflecting the brand image when it was updated. All hard standing pitches but not all pitches are level. Wardens allow you to pitch looking over the countryside [drive in] but insist on the peg rule to maintain the gap. Access road is tight and traffic jams occur as people move on/off pitches. Wifi good - on pitch 30 anyway. Midweek break price was terrific value for a single person. Ideal for walkers. Worth a visit into one of the caves. Peveril Castle may be more suited to those with a passion for history.

Excellent Winter Site

An excellent site and location, especially for wintertime getaways, with its hard standings. There is little need to use powered transport as everything can be done on foot. Grocery shopping, butchers, greengrocers, post office and newsagent in Hope while Castleton has a staggering six pubs and various tourist attractions, including its famous caves and outlets for its unique blue john jewellery. An abundance of walks with varying difficulty are possible from this site. A special mention to wardens Andy and Deanna who are second to none. They assisted me with a minor caravan problem and their help was much appreciated. Well Done and thank you.
