Great Facilities

We visited in early Jan, '18 for the first time. It is easy to find on the road from Hope into Castleton. The facilities have recently been upgraded and must be some of the best in the country now. The drive over grey water drain is particularly useful for motorhomes. The pitches are all level, hardstanding and some are serviced so you get your own tap and waste drain. It's a 10 min walk into the village where there is a great choice of pubs, restaurants and shops. The tourist information centre has a great cafe as well as the usual displays and info. There can be a bit of noise as it is so close to the road but it wasn't too intrusive. We're looking forward to going back in May for more walking.

Full House

The site is understandably popular and all facilities are of the usual high standard one becomes used to. The only downside was that for us the site felt as though too many pitches had been squeezed into the space available, although I am not saying the 6 metre gap is not being adhered to. On a previous visit when I had a good choice of pitches I did not gain this impression.

Hikers Paradise

We arrived in glorious sunshine and left 5 days later mid Beast from the East!!! Well located site for hiking straight from the site into the fabulous peaks. The views as you hike up Winnatts Pass and Mam Tor were worth the freezing wind we had to endure. This site is a 10 minute walk into Castleton which has several good pubs. Be warned weekends are very busy with lots of day visitors to the area. A real bonus is the local bakery were the enticing smells post hike lure you in for a hot fresh sausage roll. The caverns and mines are within walking distance but if you drive into the village be prepared to pay for parking. The site offered the usual high standard of club facilities. The site is located on the main road into Castleton and at busy periods you can hear road noise. We left in thick snow and had to dig the awning out to take down however the wardens offered useful advice regarding the best route out of the area and didn't object to us and a neighbouring caravan exiting the site via the entrance to avoid getting stuck in the snow. Will definitely return just in warmer weather.

Beast from the East

We stayed at Castleton Thursday 15th to 18th March and was surprised at the amount of snow that fell on Saturday. We were due to go home Sunday but was going to leave the caravan until Tuesday with everything locked up. After asking how much it was to leave it i was told it was the same amount to leave it as we had paid for the previous nights even though we were not staying in the caravan. Don't know if this is a Caravan Club policy but I think it's wrong in these circumstances especially when everyone who were due to come were cancelling so there were plenty of availability. Other than that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back.Beautiful site. It's a pity the dog walk isn't a little bigger.

Great Location

Castleton is a great location being a 10 minute walk into the town. Despite freezing weather we had a great time. The games room is nice and staff are very friendly. Shower and toilet block are spotless and well looked after.

NICELY REFURBISHED TOILET BLOCK - SHAME ABOUT THE PITCHES!!

We stayed during the week of the 'Beast from the East' when the wardens eventually had to close the site to new arrivals due to heavy snow and freezing temperatures. On arrival (warm & sunny - we ate our lunch outside!) we ended up on one of the new Super Pitches, mainly because of the shortage of awning permitted hard standings. The majority of the pitches available to us on arrival were blue pegs - no awning pitches. None of the remaining awning permitted pitches appealed to us, mainly because our two dogs. We decided to upgrade to a well positioned Super Pitch which was great initially, before 'The Beast' took control of the weather. Anyone considering booking a Super Pitch should take into consideration the weather forecast and avoid them if there's any sign of freezing conditions. We've used them twice this winter - both times in temperatures below freezing (previously at Hawes). The pitch tap froze on both occasions and it was impossible to use the pitch drain - so they're a waste of money!! We queried the shortage of awning pitches with the warden and she explained it was because the distance between some of the pitches did not meet with fire regulations when awnings were erected. Which made us wonder why The Club didn't upgrade the hard standing pitches at the same time that the site was closed for the toilet block improvements recently. Some of the hard standings are in pretty poor condition so,taking into consideration that this site is very busy throughout the year, surely it would have made sense to re-position and renovate the pitches at the same time? Apart from our moan about the pitches, this is a great site managed by truly superb wardens who are very friendly, efficient and helpful. It's location is fantastic with a short walk to the numerous (dog friendly) pubs, cafeterias and restaurants in Castleton village. The bakery shop on the way back to the site produce delicious pork pies - we found it impossible to walk past without buying something!! With so many local walks and attractions nearby, you can see why this site is usually fully booked - even in February!! We have stayed at Castletown on numerous occasions over the past 20 years and we will certainly try and re-book in the future - we'll be back!!! Graham & Denise Mulcahy + our 2 very happy dogs!!

1st visit

This was our first visit to Castleton and arriving in February you have to take the weather in your stride. We arrived just as the electric problem was resolved so all pitches were available. Being on the older side, we found the walk into Castleton fairly easy and would recommend people give it a go. There are fantastic views round and about, especially for photographers. Buxton and Bakewell are within driving distance and the Snake Pass is wonderful, if it's open. We left the site on the day it snowed but all the roads round were well gritted and the journey home was uneventful. Would recommend this site to anyone wanting a peaceful site with great views.

First visit to castleton Feb 2018

Our first visit to Castleton in our motorhome, on arrival staff very friendly and site clean, found a good pitch. Location fantastic for walking into castleton on a path which wasnt far, with plenty of walks around. Site very clean, toilet blocks etc exceptional. We had lots of snow and the main roads on site were kept clear as best they could. Only downside we found was the dog walking area on site. Didnt quite see the point as it wasnt secure and dogs had to be kept on leads, if this isnt going to be changed it should say so within the details of the site. the walk accross the site was a better area than the actual dog walk area, also lack of dog poo bins within the site. We asked the wardens if there was anywhere dogs could be let off but they didnt know as they were not dog owners?? found this the only downside, even if your not dog owners surely you would have this kind of information. This did not spoil our stay on site, just needs to be explained within the details in my opinion. Great place

Our first trip to Castleton since the new shower block refurbishment

New shower block is nice but the Caravan Club should have really spent some money getting the electrics sorted. On our arrival there was about twenty pitches out of action due to an electric problem. The electric was switched off numerous times within our stay so they could resolve the problem. Pitches looking a bit neglected and and tall white posts to stop vehicles going over the grass spoil the site. The best thing about the site is that you can walk into Castleton from the site and the friendly wardens.

Excellent site

Spent three nights at this lovely site early February. Great facilities and all spotless. There was some electrical work being done to some pitches, but plenty of notices around the site explaining when and the short duration the power would be off. It didn’t disrupt our plans at all. Short walk into the lovely village of Castleton, where all but one of the many pubs were muddy boot and dog friendly. Easy access to the many walks in the area, and a bustop just outside the site for the less able.
