First trip after lockdown

Desperate for a break after nearly 4 months, we booked Blackshaw Moor, but this was not our first choice. But what a pleasant surprise! The location so near to Leek, but on the edge of the specatular Peak District was excellent. The lay out of the site was spacious with terraced levels. A slight downside was the traffic noise from the main road, but once settled in, we didn't notice it. There are lots of places to visit, walk and shop - to suit all tastes. The history of the site is interesting, in that it was once a base for Polish soldiers after WW2. As you walk around the site, there are small photo boards showing what it was like during those times. How the site was organised for these Covid times was excellent and reassuring. Finally, we must mention the warden team, who were some of the most welcoming we have come across. And what an excellent job they did, always with a smile and a wave. Thank you wardens.

April 2021 Blackshaw Moor Review

We have just returned from a 3 night visit on this site, first site after hopefully the last lockdown!, We travelled from Sheffield via Buxton then through to leek, all roads clear and are caravan friendly, the site entrance was clearly marked and was as expected from the caravan club. The warden greated us at the barrier and asked if we had a nice trip over, had a chat for fie minutes whilst the wife paid and then set off to select our pitch, we went to the top of the site as the rad we had just been on has plenty of quarry lorries hurtling along it, oh watch out for the speed camera van just outside the sites gates also, it’s a 20mph when the orange school lights are flashing. The site is well cared for and all working their clearly love what they do, Great for the Roaches and the reservoir for some good waking in the area, we will return here, facilities again as can be expected from a ccl site. Leek 10mins down the road, all major supermarkets there, thanks to the warden for lending us the change for the car parking at the reservoir!!! Parking there £3 for 2 hours and £5 al day. Pub across road looked excellent but was fully booked so missed that experience. Fantastic and like I say will return keep up the good work!

Second Choice

Having had my weeks holiday cancelled at Wirral Club site due to being put in Tier 3. I booked Blackshaw Moor site as a second choice. Being my first stay on the site I kept a open mind, The check in was very smooth but there were many caravan and Motorhomes waiting; would seem people are still turning up 45 minutes before the check in opens at 1pm. The site to my surprise was below half full when i arrived, large selection of pitches to pick from. To avoid the road noise i picked to stay at the top tier of the site away from the road, unfortunatly the farmer who owns the land around the side uses the area behind the hedge for his friends to use off road motor bikes that made a awful noise most days. I moved to the middle tier and the pitch was a little small but near a service point. Still could hear the noise. Not a lot the site can do about that seeing as its off site. The site has two toilet blocks, but only one open. The first 3 nights were not a problem but at the start of the children half term the site became full and having only one toilet block open was not too great on a morning, having to wait to use the site facility. For dog owners there is a rather nice dog walk with nice open views of the country side. The site is located in a nice area, almost all things you need to drive too, there are many shops and supermarkets in Leek. There is a pub 5 minutes walk from the site but with the COVID situation I did not go to the pub. Being end of October I maybe did not see the site at its best, the warden told me he is leaving and will not be there next year so I'm sure there will be changes next year. If you like to watch TV using a coax aerial you can receive 125 tv channels I would only go back to this site as a last resort, i did not like the noise on site.

Great Location

This site is in an amazing location for local walks especially Tittesworth Lake and Luds Church. It is a clean site and although there were restrictions in place it did not deter from us enjoying the stay. We do have a young spaniel who enjoys getting very muddy on walks therefore had booked with the understanding that there was a dog wash on site however when we were there, even though stated on the site map there was nothing available which was really disappointing. Luckily we had a Mud Daddy and were able to clean the dog before he made a good job of dirtying the van. Also to note if you are booking a serviced pitch please ensure you have a long extension as if you are sited with your caravan inlet on the wrong side you do need this to reach the taps. Overall this did not prevent us from enjoying our stay but more of please be aware. We did go to a local pub (The Reform Inn) for a meal which was amazing and would thoroughly recommend not only for the food but the warmth and good service we received - best to book a table.

Great Staffordshire Location

Blackshaw Moor is not too far away from home but a great easy drive to a beautiful environment. September was our first time at BSMCS. It will not be the last. Many a year of meeting with family at Tittersworth Reservoir now, within easy walking distance. A great place to walk around and stay for lunch. A few lovely pubs near by too. Another enjoyable day walking to and around the Roaches. Hard to believe this was the first time I have visited there when I live so close!! I didn’t get chance to get out on my bike as I would have liked. Weather and busy road from off the site were off putting. The site was busy with arrivals and departures but plenty of pitches available. Unfortunately there had been an emergency before our arrival and wardens were awaiting ambulance crew to the site. We, as arrivals were all ‘blocking’ the barrier! The lady at reception was lovely, booking us in with good clear information and very reassuring in anxious times. I didn’t catch your name, hope you know who you are, thank you for your lovely welcome. (shame another warden told you to speed things up as you would never move us arrivals in my ear shot! NOT good customer service, despite an awaiting ambulance! Maybe look at the arrivals queuing system at such a short road area.) The site was well maintained, one block of toilets only open but when I used the facilities, it was always quiet. A couple of issues which I reported while there, which were down to individual club members. We all need to leave areas as we would like to find them. Cleanliness comes from the individual, it is not the overall responsibility of the wardens; cleaning toilet seats if soiled! Cleaning draining boards after washing up! Supervising your children at all times, especially in confined spaces, the toilet block! It is not the area for running around in! Not during a pandemic! Overall, well done Blackshaw Moor, a great site and we will return. You are on our ‘to go to, not far from home’ site list!

Disappointing

Spent a very wet weekend here 9 -11 October 2020. Pitches near to the road are very noisy so avoid these. Despite there being two toilet blocks, one was permanently closed. The remaining block was cordoned off to allow only two people in at a time, meaning there was queues. The cleaning regime was good, however the timings just did not work for us. Toilets were unavailable on our arrival 14:30, and unavailable on our departure 11:30, which were the only times we actually needed them, as our on board dunny was packed away. This same complaint is in several reviews, but the jobs worth management clearly are not listening. Having paid full price we expect one unisex toilet to be made available, whilst the main toilets are cleaned. If thats not possible then dont take our money! The site did have a separate disabled toilet, but everything was cordoned off at the same time. Other club sites seam to manage. We wont be going back.

Very helpful warden.....

We had booked a 7 night stay here with plans to meet up with friends & family outside of the site but cut short our stay due to the forecast of more unsettled weather which we had had in the lakes the previous 2 weeks..... The warden was very helpful after trying to contact HO to sort out the above. It is a lovely site with very generous pitches but despite our pitch (67) being quite a way away from the road which only has a 40 mph speed limit it did become noisy as early as 5a.m. We were planning to visit at half-term with our youngest grandchildren (7) & their bikes but there are signs for No Cycling on site so we have had to re consider & book elsewhere. It may be that the No Cycling applies to just one area which is the road toward the exit, which is quite an incline & leads straight out onto the main road so this is totally understandable but wasn't going to work for us..... As others have said, Covid guidelines are being met but this is the 1st site that we have experienced only 2 persons allowed in the shower blocks + one closed! Well there are actually 4 hooks, 2 toilet & 2 showers but this is not helped when someone puts 2 bands there, 1 for toilet & 1 for shower..... had to laugh at that one....

great for walking

We visit this site every September as this area of the peak district is really fantastic for walking. from the site you can walk up onto, 'the Roaches' which is just stunning. I can honestly say it's my favourite walk in the UK, the views are unbelievable. You can also do walks around Tittesworth reservoir, Rudyard lake, Luds church and up onto Blackshaw moor itself. The staff on site are always very friendly, yes, you check in from the outside of the office through the window due to Covid but I honestly can't see why this is an issue and why someone had a problem with it. We used our own facilities so can't comment on the cleanliness of the shower block. The three horseshoes pub nearby is lovely though we didn't eat there this time but they have a lovely beer garden with great views. All food and drinks were ordered via their app at the moment. Some grass around our pitch was rather long which, as it had been wet, was a bit of a pain when walking around the edge to get in the car but mostly on site all of the other grass had been cut. we shall certainly be back next year

Extremely diligent, pleasant and friendly wardens

Only bad weather spoilt our stay here. One small point (which I understand will be remedied when funds permit) is that the hardcore on some of the pitches is unstable so we had wheelspin trying to reverse off our levelling ramps.

Good site for exploring the Peak District

We found this site when the one we were staying on became waterlogged. We needed hardstanding and wanted to be able to explore the Peak District easily. The wardens were so welcoming when we arrived and so helpful finding us a great pitch when they were pretty much full. We had a great view of the top of The Roaches in late evening sun. The facilities were absolutely spotless, thanks to the hard work of the staff which we really appreciated. Lovely walks up onto The Roaches from half a mile from site and Bakewell, Buxton and Ashbourne all easy drives away. It's true, you can hear road noise at the front of the site, but it didn't bother us and dies down overnight. Further back on the site, I doubt you'd notice. I can't comment on family stuff as it isn't relevant to us. A big thank you has to go to the amazing site wardens without whom we would not be able to enjoy our holidays. I, for one, enjoyed the brambles: I collected some delicious blackberries behind our pitch. 😉
