We were under the impression that the Ferry Pitches were at the top part of the site near to the Office Block. We were pitched down the bottom near to the toilet block. The first morning we were woken at 05.30am by the occupants of a small campervan, it sounded like they were refurbishing it before catching their ferry, there must be a limit to how many times they could open and close their doors. Finally at 06.10am they started the engine, 5minutes later they actually left. Next morning, a couple in a motorhome left early, the only noise was the engine starting and the van pulling away. Would not stay here again in the Summer far to noisey with all the traffic leaving early in the morning. If people are catching a early ferry, they should be be pitching at the top part of the site and be more considerate to the other campers. Perhaps I am expecting to much.
We have stayed at Black Horse Farm site several times on the way to France - just for one night; it's so handy to be able to stop there just a few miles from the port. It was good to see this time the new wardens' office - so much lighter and brighter - and updated toilet block. One time we must stay longer. Thanks for a good stay.
Stopped here on Saturday evening after a long drive through France, made very welcome by the wardens lovely new reception all completed. I had booked a ferry pitch all good, however the toilet block could do with being updated. Overall very easier to find and we will be calling back later on in the year.
This for us was a return visit, having visited in 2015 and 2014, again our reason for visiting was to visit some of the areas we knew from years ago.
The site is well situated with pleasant helpful staff and of course the famous and much reported rabbits, the only slight downside being the ongoing construction work.
A recommended site.
The site was well positioned for public transport to Canterbury Folkstone and train links to Brighton etc. I was disappointed when I asked about wifi I was told to look at leaflet as staff knew nothing about it. The leaflet said it was free however I couldn't connect even after paying. Also mobile phone coverage was rubbish couldn't contact family while on site. The site it self is clean and very tidy. Not somewhere I would stay more than two or three days.
We stayed at this site for 7 nights from 19th July. we chose pitch 80 well away from the ferry pitches and near to the toilet block and dog walk. The block was tired but very clean except when members leave the toilets dirty (there is no excuse for it and there were not many children on site) therefore you have to presume that it is women as well as men that are not doing what they should!
We unfortunately picked the wrong time as although we reached the site on the Tuesday before the awful weekend of the Dover delays, our problem was we had to carefully plan our trips as we couldn't go to Dover as we wouldn't have been able to get back to the site, all the traffic around the area were a nightmare. Although we knew that there would be high changeover, we had no idea that being that far away from the ferry pitches would we be disturbed at 3 and 4 in the morning, I feel that is not acceptable. We met a lot of very nice, friendly people. The wardens were very helpful and I feel manage very well with the high turnover of vehicles. The pub over the road from the site is GREAT, Good food, Good service, Very friendly, helpful staff, Very Dog Friendly. I personally wouldn't go back to this site, through no fault of the site but just a bad experience and unlucky timing.
Like other reviewers we were surprised to see building work still going on. I did notice that the reception area was now completed, but what else is being built l have no idea. Let's hope our contributions towards the Caravan Club will benefit the members with this new building. Apart from the above the site is perfect for a stay over before and after Europe.
We stayed here on our way to the Ferry and were glad not to be sleeping on the A20, as the Chaos seemed to have no end we decided to drive to Hull the next day and took a ferry to Rotterdam (no problem with Dutch Passport Control). We arrived at midday and were allocated a pitch right next to the main electricity supply unit, it didn't bother me but my wife has a thing about electro-smog and asked to change pitch, she was told no we couldn't even though we were the only ones there at that time. We had a Ferry pitch which was large and well kept. There is some sort of building work going on, not sure what they're building though, maybe its a new toilet/shower block as the current one is a little dated (although fully functional and clean). People started packing up and leaving at 04:00 so you will be woken up if you're on a Ferry Pitch. This is a nice site and perfect (normally) for the Port/Tunnel. We would use it again.
Like others, it is disappointing to note that building work still blights this site which is a pity as it is a lovely stop for one night or an even longer stop to/from the continent. That said, you cannot fault the Wardens who very helpfully directed me to a local caravan dealer to enable me to replace a broken towing mirror which some brain dead white van man took out in Hythe trying to force his way past me when it was not his right of way due to parked vehicles.
We were dead unlucky as at the conclusion of our stay at Black Horse Farm, we caught the huge backlog caused by the French Border security checks. Having found that the A20 was solid, we double backed through Densole and onto the A2 and eventually after some five hours, got onto a P&O ferry. This has somewhat soured our holiday as it is so much hassle after a long journey when this sort of thing happens. If we go abroad again, it is likely to be via Portsmouth as this is now the third time that I have had problems getting through Dover.
