An autumnal delight

This site is well worth a visit, both in its own right and as a very useful base for Central London and all points south east. Pretty at any time of year (open all year round) it is particularly colourful with the changing colour of trees in the Autumn. Local facilities are enhanced by recent opening in 2015 of a large Sainsbury 10 / 15 minutes walk away (other side of the railway station). When Abbey Wood railway station eventually becomes the Eastern terminal of the Cross Rail line, it will be further enhanced making the City Centre even more rapidly accessible. It's a couple of years since we were last here but we noticed a SIGNIFICANT rise in the number of take offs and landings at London City Airport just over the river, and we found the aircraft noise more pronounced than in previous years. It took us around three days to become marginally accustomed to it, but in a week, we didn't become inured to it. It's always there - starting from around 05.00 hours. This is a bit of a downside and, we fear, will get worse before it gets better - if at all. Nothing you can do about it - but it does detract and reduces my scoring for 'Overall rating', 'Peace and Quiet' and 'Location' by one point each. That said, we both commented that there appeared to be fewer two tone emergency vehicle sirens in the vicinity during the hours of darkness. Can't explain that - but it was significant. Still WELL WORTH visiting and as well 'wardened' and cared for as ever.

Great location

A very peaceful site in a woodland location. This site is very popular with European campers due to its proximity to London. The bus stop is 300 yards away. catch a very frequent 180 and with one change en-route 90 minutes later you're crossing Westminster Bridge and jumping off at Horse Guards parade, and all for free with a bus pass. The train station offers frequent trains in to Charing Cross or Cannon Street for a return fare of about £8.50. En-route on either bus or train is Greenwich, very interesting in itself. We shall be using this campsite again whenever we fancy a few days away.

Oasis in the city

Abbey Wood, What a surprise! The site is in peaceful woodland and not far from from central London. There is public transport only a few minutes walk away and frequent bus and train services will take you almost anywhere you want to go. In a whole week we only used our car once and that was mainly to fill it with fuel! Choose your pitch carefully. Some are well under the trees and get no sun at all. However, the layout of the site means no pitch is too far from one or other of the shower blocks ( the third block is closed at some times of the year)

We mostly used the train to go into central London, it's far quicker than the bus, but we did use the bus to visit Greenwich and to go to the Red House at Bexley. We invested in an Oyster card before we went to use on the trains which has a daily cap of £9.50 from Abbey Wood.

Sainsburys is just a few minutes walk from the station so we often shopped each day on the way back to the van, seemed to work best as the weather was extremely hot, but we did go to the Asda at Belverdere about 3 miles away

Bank holiday weekend away

Stayed here for two nights , lovely place you would have no idea you were in a built up area once on site. Quick access to London on the train. Some parts of the site could do with updating especially the washing area. Highly recommended if you arrive early as the midday rule isnt enforced this is possibly due to the easy access and egress to the site. Well worth a visit

Perfect for visiting London

The site is perfeclty situated in a suburb of London for visiting the city. The next railway station "Abbey Wood" is about 10 walking minutes away. Take the DLR train to the city, not a bus (takes too much time). With the DLR the city can be reached in about half an hour. As a restaurant we can recommend the indian "Taj Mahal" nearby the station.

Run in with the staff!

We were only staying the one night and after the altercation with the staff it was probably just as well. Everything was fine until we came to leave. Pitches fine, facilities fine, site quiet, handy for the station and for a lovely walk. Would come again as there seems to be so much to do in this area and to get to London by boat might make a change. The incident arose when we came to empty our motorhome - we had been advised of one MWP (Motorhome Waste Point) on the left as entering the area behind the barrier. However on leaving that would mean that we would need to actually leave and come back in again but we noticed another MWP shown near a toilet block. Unfortunately my husband mistook an ordinary emptying/fill up place for a MWP and was carefully emptying our grey water with a hose when 2 staff members stormed over. The male was very aggressive and asked my husband if he was a new member - we have been members for many years but tend to use the CLs so are not that clued up with the site restrictions plus had never been to Abbey Wood. Instead of politely redirecting us, the staff member was quite abrupt with my husband (in his 70's so doesn't look macho or tough!) and demanded he refer to the plan which we had been handed on arrival. We hurriedly packed away the hose and scurried to the correct place. Truly sorry for this error but we thought the MWP on the plan referred to where we were. It wasn't as though we were emptying our toilet there! and we were trying to minimise any overflow by using the hose!! Lighten up staff and try and be a bit more courteous towards members. Thanks

Lovely stay

We really enjoyed our few days at Abbey Woods. Wardens were friendly and we stayed on pitch 20 which gave us plenty of space and sun! We felt secluded even though we were surrounded by other vans. The site is very peaceful though early morning noise from the station being renovated did annoy at times. We used both the bus and train into London. 180 to Greenwich is a bumpy 40 minutes ride. Train station is about 10 min walk away and much more comfortable and quicker than the bus. The security is very good at the site. We would definitely stay here again. Grass nicely kept.

Yorkshire visitors

Hard to believe we were in such a huge city when we pitched up at the peaceful and green abbey wood site. Outstandingly helpful and friendly wardens. Nothing too much trouble. Facilities immaculate. An array of tame wildlife including squirrels and birdlife including parrots! Site wonderful for transport links to London within a short walk. Good curry house (taj mahal ) near train station.
