Nice site but...

Arrived in July with high expectations of winner of Practical Caravan 'Best small site'. Warm welcome from site-sitters (owners returned later). Well kept spacious site with hook-ups well distributed so no need to feel cramped. Lower field is undulating but easy to find a flattish space to pitch, distant views better from pitches near the house. Water points provided on top and bottom field and disposal facilities discreetly located and easy to access. Wi-fi OK if you lean on the garden fence but doesn't reach the bottom field. Only downside was their lovely dog using the site as a free-range toilet, and the poo patrols being fewer than one might like. The major's response to a deposit outside the van was disappointingly brusque, although Janet later cleared it up. Reading other reviews the dog issue seems to have two sides, maybe we had problems because we were in the bottom field further from the house? Otherwise the area is lovely and quiet, we enjoyed cycling around, and a visitor pack of nearby attractions is provided.

It's already been said.

I can't add much to what has already been said. After staying on another CL last week this was an anti-climax. From live music in a marquee and clay pigeon shooting, both in next fields this CL was pure peace which is just as well because one of our dogs was taken ill so we couldn't travel much. This gave us a place to chill out. We had a chicken coop behind our van and although the four chooks, Hope, Faith, Charity and Grace, didn't make much noise it was lovely to hear them when they did. No smell either. I noticed that there was a remark about dog poo. In the week we have been here we haven't seen any but as this is Honey's patch it is understandable that it could happen. Whenever any was spotted it was cleared up and in his introduction Ian asks if anyone sees any can they let him know although they do their own poo patrols. There is a Tesco store in Ellesmere about 1 mile away but Ian recommended we try Stans at St. Martins about 8 miles and we are glad we did. It made a change from the normal supermarkets and some of the produce was from smaller companies rather than the big manufacturers. Birch Hill Farm has it's own FaceBook page as well as website.  I would recommend this CL to anyone who enjoys the peace and quiet and we will be back.

You will not be disappointed

Recently returned from a four night stay. As others have probably said before this is an exceptional CL, lots of  room with many different areas in which to pitch. Great views over the surrounding area and very close to Ellesmere.  Honey the dog is delightful and very very friendly. Lovely to see her with her puppy and the interaction of them both with the cats and hens. We found the WIFI to be very good but temperamental, maybe Ian could leave instructions how to rest this without the need to disturb him. Thanks Ian and Janet for a great CL

lovely site

The site is very well cared for and owners very friendly.  The only down side for us was that the owners dog, albeit lovely, would wonder around the site and do her business right out side your van.  on three occasions we had to pick it up and on one of those my husband had trod in it.

Good Value For Money

On arrival, it is clear from the outset that the owners take great pride in their CL. The two main pitching areas are either side of the driveway that leads up to the farmhouse. The grass is close mown with some areas dedicated as hard standing (eco matting which serves it purpose). There are plenty of electric hook ups and the upper part of the site, where we were, provides good views (weather permitting). The weather wasn't that brilliant during our stay and we did feel a little exposed to the wind. If you want to access the Wi-Fi, you will need to be close to the house/garage. Ellesmere is a 20 minute walk alongside quite a busy road (there is a pavement). If that doesn't appeal, there is plenty of parking in the town which offers all the usual facilities. There are a number of meres that can be accessed on foot using the canal towpath - if you like bird watching then you should give them a visit. All in all, a good site; friendly welcome; value for money at £12.00 per night.

Returning to caravan owning after 15 years!

We chose this site as our first trip out with our caravan after not having had one for over 15 years. Not too far from home if everything went wrong (vans have changed a lot in 15yrs) and it sounded easy to get to.  We couldn't have chosen better. We tried everything out in the van with no disasters. Dog, cat and chickens wandering about gave the site a very calm feel - we needed that on arrival. A very friendly welcome, pitches signposted discretely, lovely short mown grass, plenty of space with views over the fields.  Thank you for being just the CL we needed to show us what we had been missing.

Just what you need plus more

The welcome to this site was very thorough and made us feel right at home.  The site is beautiful and we felt that we were given every opportunity to share this place.  We met the gentleman owner who was very approachable from the initial phone call putting us at ease, 'take it easy and don't worry, if you forget anything! We caravan so can lend it to you'. That takes a little off your mind that youre going where they wish for you to enjoy the break without stress.  I was given a walk around the site to help choose a good plot and ensure any idiosyncrasies of each were discussed to ensure whichever chosen I wouldn't be left wondering.  Two welcome packs were made available. One with probable every flier from every business around the area, this helped plan any trips or meal. Second one was smaller with site background, emergency stickers with info in case of emergency services need. Very handy plus as was said great advert when you leave.  When you read the supplied documents you will understand why the welcome is so thorough (it was much appreciated) With all this said you may think that this may of been a controlling site but it couldn't be further from the truth. The impression I received was this part is the caravan site, make your self at home, over there is the owners house please be respectful and a good neighbour.  What's there. Electric hookup.  Water is available from a few areas so you need a water container. (Honestly, there was only ourselves on the main site and if I'd of asked if I could connect to the tap for a constant feed, I doubt they would of refused) Elsan point - yes its well away from the plots and I feel best place for poo dump area. There are two points at the elsan point.  Plenty of walking areas for dogs and humans.  Welcoming hosts, came over to welcome the whole family and our dog (I think also to make sure both the site dog and our own got on well)  Honey the site family dog was very nice. Rules - don't feed her (can you imagine how fat she would be if every visitor fed her plus it would be annoying for none doggy visitors to be pestered for food if she was used to this) plus don't let her in the caravan for the same reasons as above.  No showers or toilets - this not as a slight but a fact so people are aware. This was the first time my wife had used the shower or toilet in our caravan, result ? The owners son was working hard on the saturday cleaning away leaves from the site. The whole site was immaculate including the not so pleasant task of clean the elsan point.  At £12 per night was great value.  Would I recommend it, yes Will I go again, yes

so near yet (seemingly) so far away....

This is the most wonderful place to settle down for a time and relax. The site is easy to find, from clear directions, just a little way out of Ellesmere, but on arrival, it is so quiet and peaceful. The views are amazing, extending right out to Wrexham and beyond. The site is very well kept, with all facilities clearly labelled and clean. We loved the very warm welcome from Ian, Janet and James and of course, Honey (golden retriever) 'V' (cat) and the hens. Ian and Janet provide a very comprehensive pack of information about places to visit in the surrounding area. Even though we have been coming to the locality for many years, each time we have visited, we have managed to find something new to do. We have stayed here before, and we have every intention of returning. Thanks to Birch Hill team, for welcoming us yet again!

Just Great!

It's amazing how tranquil a place can be and yet have such easy access. Directions in handbook are very clear and the site is well signed off the main road. With 50 yards of wide lane you go into the private drive for the CL. Hedges well cut back and a tarmacked surface make the drive easy. The CL is on two levels. Bottom one is well protected by hedges whilst the upper one is open and has fantastic views. Both have EHU and some hardstanding. There is lots of choice over just where you pitch. First class welcome from owners and they give you a folder with local info in. So much to do in area especially for adults. e.g market towns, canals, nature reserves, craft centres, preserved railway. Excellent value at £12.

Peaceful Holiday with panoramic views.

If you like peace and quiet, generously spaced pitch, a warm welcome and plenty of info in an info folder for you and your dogs then you must visit this site! We enjoyed our stay so much we have booked in for another holiday. Plenty to do in area or not too far away. Lots of good eating houses and pubs, some on the banks of the river Dee. Good food, good beer, good CL - happy days! You will be made most welcome by the owners.
