How to thrive on a non 240v site!

Due to difficulties migrating the original thread, which was massively interesting and popular with members, I am starting another one until the original can be found and  migrated to the Forum.  I apologise to the original OP but I think this is far too important not to be available. Personally, I think, because of the massive moves in technology recently, this subject should have a section by itself. I don't suppose the CC would think about that? So, anything about Solar Panels, LED lighting, Inverters, Safefill even. Anything that assists the caravanners to go off grid in fact - and saves money!!

I am not in the least bit supprised that my observation.  That I had never read anyone  objecting to metered electricity because it would cost them more.  A perfectly reasonable position imho.   This is relevant to this thread because if low users are effectively subsidising those that abuse the system there by costing them more.

This forum had been ruined by a few posters who howl down anything they don’t agree with.  They  hunt in a pack.   The bullying behaviour on this forum is notorious and is well known and remarked upon in other forums.  This behaviour has driven many posters away.  People who could have made a positive contribution and share their knowledge with this forum.  They don’t because they have been put off by a few who’s contributions are nearly always negative

Don’t worry I’ve been here from the start and I am not going anywhere.

PS @Brue, I have on a couple occasion “fixed” a fridge that won’t cool on gas, by gently cleaning the flue.  On one occasion with a goose feather, most recently with a tie wrap fastener.  Might just work for you and doesn’t cost anything.  NB if cleaning from above there is a baffle in the flue that needs to be removed.

You are way off topic Boff IMO. Maybe start a new thread and sound off there. If you need a hobby horse have the good manners to go build your own rather than highjacking a long running thread.

Boff, there was a thread recently about fridges in hot weather, I made a contribution on there because there are ways of improving this situation when using, in our case, gas. Unfortunately there is a server error on the thread and it cant be read. We did find a solution by making sure the air vents weren't covered by the habitation door, also we increased airflow over the fridge which has a slide out work surface over it. The temp control needs to be set differently in hot weather too. We got it to work correctly in the end but we lost food and overused the gas for three days.

There were comments that some van manufacturers continue to disregard fridge fittings regarding airflow etc and this can cause problems.

These are things that are useful to others who are off EHU and dependent on gas.

It would be a pity to lose this thread too due to comments that make contributors give up on the subject.

I hope we can continue now?

STOP PRESS: Morrison’s have tweeted! Safefills are now acceptable at all their LPG  outlets! This is a massive step forward for the evolution of LPG within the leisure industry. Congratulations to Safefill for their dogged determination to bring this brilliant product to market against all the odds! Thanks to Morrison’s who have approached this with an open mind and been convinced by facts not rumours and propaganda and  Thanks to all those who wrote to Morrison’s when I suggested it- apparently that had much to do with the decision. Just show your Safefill Cylinder to the cashier and job done!

There you go, Merve. A challenge - set up a solar still to supply your own water unless you want to go the "Bear Grylls route" and recycle your own wee. wink

Bit of a pathetic blog CY isn’t it -not yours-  ETs!  Water is necessary for life - electricity makes life easier but it’s not essential if you want to ‘go back to basics’ as the CMHC seems to think non EHUers do! He’ll be finding something wrong with me breathing air next! Come on, let’s be sensible!!!

@ Brue, I think nearly all manufactures are guilty of obstructing the airflow with the door,  with at least some off their models and as far as I know this against the installation instructions.  Equally I have friends who are convinced that winter fridge covers are to stop drafts.   I posted about cleaning the flue I did it about 6 weeks ago and it worked.

@ Merve, can you post a link to the tweet.

I think the thread is basically about non EHU, a throw away comment by another poster a bit further back saying he only considered EHU sites put a spanner in the works. But I think the idea of the thread is to discuss ways of managing without EHU so discussing metering is irrelevant on this particular thread? smile

Well said Brue and it is the main reason I have not responded with any counter arguments on the subject of metering or choice for that matter. I made my initial point and considered there was no need to comment further.

I only travel (with the van) in the confines of western Europe but likewise have never come across a site without mains EHU (are they allowed) and fully use it to the extent that we rarely ever turn on the gas. However Merv has concentrated on developing  a lifestyle where he can tour the UK and be independent of EHU and the charges associated with its provision and good luck to him. If I was to start touring in the Uk which is unlikely the last thing I would want was to spend my time by "white pegs" on overcrowded overpriced sites just for the benefit of EHU and would seriously consider  following his example.,

Thank you David for a well put and very balanced view. That just about explains it! For ET to suggest that ‘ primative sites should move on’ suggests to me that he believes there is no place for them. What a pity.

For the record: don't confuse the ET referred to with me! wink
