Motorhome facilities and rules

We've just returned from a tour of mid and south Wales in our motorhome.  We stayed at a number different locations: pubs, public car parks, private camp sites and one night at the C&MC site in St Davids.  We have paid our membership fees for many years, but in practice we haven't stayed on a Club site very often, and not since the name change and rebranding.  So we expected great improvements for motorhomes. 

We arrived rather early, but were warmly welcomed by the lady on reception who unexpectedly checked us in before the official time. 

I was rather confused by the parking rules, but looked at the way adjacent vehicles were arranged and tried to imitate them.  Since our motorhome is less than 2.5m wide, versus a car/caravan/awning measuring maybe 7m, it was easy to maintain the 6m separation from our neighbours.  However, apparently I had picked the wrong corner to go next to the white post.  This was explained to me that evening, but since we were leaving the next morning the very friendly warden said not to bother moving.  Fine, I'll be more careful if we visit again.

The next morning, there was a queue of motorhomes at the only grey waste point, so we decided that, as we only had a small amount of waste we would empty the toilet cassette at the service point then just fill up with fresh water and leave.  So, I pulled up next to the adjacent service point and attached my hose connector to the threaded tap.  Shortly after, a  different warden who was maintaining the grass, came along and said that motorhomes weren't allowed to use the service points and indeed there was a notice that said this that I hadn't seen.  He said that this was because filling a motorhome takes a lot of time so other people would have to wait.  I asked why I had to wait rather than other members and although a 100 litre motorhome tank will obviously take longer than a 50 litre rolling caravan tank, there were three other service points on the site.  No! Jobsworth was adamant and claimed that it was a health and safety risk (which is hard to understand). 

According to various comments on Facebook, these is just a couple of many petty rule enforcement incidents that are alienating motorhome owners.  I really think that if the Club wants to encourage this massively increasing sector of the market, they need to learn the differences between motorhomes and towed caravans.

So, the rebranding was clearly just a marketing exercise and we will have to seriously consider whether to renew our membership next year.

Not necessarily, if the pegs remain in the same place wont the units be spaced as before?

The caravan or MH might be but not necessarily the tow car.

I meant caravan/MH when I said 'unit'...

a tow car could still be sited in the same place, with appropriate spacing as advised on the pitching instructions, but there would be a little more space to walk about the HS area.

folk don't normally change their pitching habits if one pitch is a smidge larger than another, the pitch to the peg and the other pitching instructions, dont they?

I always pitch and place car such that I can open door adjacent to the caravan fully. Tow car is always on edge of hardstand either nearside or offside of caravan depending on time of day and weather

Another thread that I am very late to and I have not read all the replies.

But as a motorhomer and member of 34 years standing (with gaps), I just had to make the point that it has always been well established that motorhomes cannot fill up at service points - other than the dedicated MHSP. I see no reason whatsoever why this should change. It would just be a huge nuisance to others and in many cases it is also likely to block the road ways around the site.

People need to accept simple rules. Too often they don't. I see lots of vans parked incorrectly and cars parked in the wrong place. Recently at Ayr, one caravanner had two cars one of which was partially on the road and outfits had to squeeze past. If he had positioned his caravan in the right place, he could easily have got one car one side and the other car the other side. I find it annoying that wardens make a huge deal of explaining these things when you arrive, but then rarely do anything to challenge those who are hard of understanding and get it wrong. I know I will be accused of pedantry by those who think it is OK just to do what they please, but my view is that these things are important for everyone's peace of mind and enjoyment of the site.  

I accept that queues for the MHSPs do increasingly occur; for myself I very very rarely use these as I find it much easier to use a water carrier and pump to fill my fresh tank and a waste carrier to drain my waste tank - assuming I am not on a serviced pitch. Messing around driving to MHSPs, hitching up hoses, and then getting position over the waste drains is such a nuisance I find I would sooner avoid it. It takes long time too which is another very good reason why using any service point should be out of the question.

I can see a larger area might give more space around the van (to cope with bigger cars/vans) but if the pegs don't move, nor will the vans...ergo, same number of pitches but with a tad more space for kit around the van.

you could, in theory, make the whole area a continuous HS but, again, if the pegs didn't move, the spacing (and number of 'pitches') would remain the same.

Having used quite a few newer hardstandings on sites up here, the HSs are bigger and have quite generous grass areas between them, often 3m of grass, some even have hedges, so doing that would certainly reduce pitch numbers if they were being converted from grass.

These HSs are however on more newly laid out sites, such as Stonehaven, or  could also be the result of a limit on number of pitches allowed and therefor having the space available to create larger HSs.

Layout is the same.... car.....van....awning, but you have more space for awning guylines and more space round the car than before.

 I agree with ET on using the space available, I always park so I can open the car doors with no risk of denting the van.  I am still on the HS as requested.


With these larger HSs the peg would not end up in the same place as if it had previously been a minimal spaced grass pitch.

In hot sunny weather I face the caravan North when possible. Before 1pm, if on site I park car/van no awning later on a hot day I move the car to other side so I can have shade

Good to see someone back on the original topic.  Not that I agree with: "..it has always been well established that motorhomes cannot fill up at service points...".  After all, it was well established for many centuries that the earth was flat.  That too was not immutable. 

In my original post, I mentioned that I was not blocking up anything, other than the end of the tap, so I didn't see why someone else had priority over me.

BTW: Would the "What's the pitch size?" or the "Lets snipe at everyone" folks start their own thread please, or someone tell me how to stop the activity emails that fill my mailbox..

Whatever, we're off to France on Monday where they look after motorhomes properly.
