Motorhome facilities and rules

We've just returned from a tour of mid and south Wales in our motorhome.  We stayed at a number different locations: pubs, public car parks, private camp sites and one night at the C&MC site in St Davids.  We have paid our membership fees for many years, but in practice we haven't stayed on a Club site very often, and not since the name change and rebranding.  So we expected great improvements for motorhomes.

We arrived rather early, but were warmly welcomed by the lady on reception who unexpectedly checked us in before the official time.

I was rather confused by the parking rules, but looked at the way adjacent vehicles were arranged and tried to imitate them.  Since our motorhome is less than 2.5m wide, versus a car/caravan/awning measuring maybe 7m, it was easy to maintain the 6m separation from our neighbours.  However, apparently I had picked the wrong corner to go next to the white post.  This was explained to me that evening, but since we were leaving the next morning the very friendly warden said not to bother moving.  Fine, I'll be more careful if we visit again.

The next morning, there was a queue of motorhomes at the only grey waste point, so we decided that, as we only had a small amount of waste we would empty the toilet cassette at the service point then just fill up with fresh water and leave.  So, I pulled up next to the adjacent service point and attached my hose connector to the threaded tap.  Shortly after, a  different warden who was maintaining the grass, came along and said that motorhomes weren't allowed to use the service points and indeed there was a notice that said this that I hadn't seen.  He said that this was because filling a motorhome takes a lot of time so other people would have to wait.  I asked why I had to wait rather than other members and although a 100 litre motorhome tank will obviously take longer than a 50 litre rolling caravan tank, there were three other service points on the site.  No! Jobsworth was adamant and claimed that it was a health and safety risk (which is hard to understand).

According to various comments on Facebook, these is just a couple of many petty rule enforcement incidents that are alienating motorhome owners.  I really think that if the Club wants to encourage this massively increasing sector of the market, they need to learn the differences between motorhomes and towed caravans.

So, the rebranding was clearly just a marketing exercise and we will have to seriously consider whether to renew our membership next year.

"Messing around driving to MHSPs, hitching up hoses, and then getting position over the waste drains is such a nuisance I find I would sooner avoid it."

...but some folk with decent sized tanks and using the shower blocks can avoid faffing with fresh and waste water containers and pumps for the duration of their stay...choosing only to visit the MHSP on their way out to fill with fresh water and empty their waste ready for the next site...

seems a sensible solution to me and requires far less "stuff".

We use our outfit almost daily to go out, so it moves regularly. We can usually go three days with a water fill up, so that’s not an issue, we merely remember to call at a tap, usually on way in to pitch up for night. We have found a collapsible bucket (so useful for other things as well), hung on rear bumper bracket, with open tap, works great for us. Not a problem to take it and empty at nearest drain point. Quick and easy, and keeps grey tank fresher. On a lot of CLs, it is just emptied into hedgerow or bottom of a tree away from pitching areas. Only shower water, no pot wash water, I throw this separate into a drain. We learned very early not to become part of the departure merry go round on Club Sites. Works great for us, and, we don’t mind, or rather don’t find, the bit of exercise an issue.

It's obviously horses for courses...one man's 'merry-go-round' is another man's 'water management circus'...

we're on a no facs club site and I'm just topping up daily as we are here for longer than our tanks can sustain...the tank will be full when we leave for our next site,  no need to top up on entry nor to visit a tap at all for the five days we are there...

our washing up water goes straight into the site drain, keeps waste volume down....could always leave the waste tap open a bit and then it's no problem at allundecided

Which Site you on BB? We like the no facility ones. The MSP at Marazion is a difficult one for big MHs, and there were some whoppers when we were there, but they coped fine. Just waited until quiet time, usually evening, and drove over to refuel and dump. We watched a huge Burstner, size of a big coach, six wheeler, our last evening, as we were pitched up next to him. Carefully across grass, bit of manoeuvring and then fill and dump, carefully back onto his pitch. They were full timers, waiting pandemic out but enjoying themselves.

We recently stayed at Northbrook Farm near Worthing and the MSP was a bit confusing as it was both MSP and normal Service point. There was no problem with parking there as the road was wide enough but it could cause some confusion that goes back to the OP. There was the normal drinking water and waste water taps but to the right was what appeared to be the notice indicated a motorhome service point. The only tap had a hose on it and was immediately above a grey water drain and the tap marked as such. I realised why some motorhomes were using the drinking water tap as the one supposedly dedicated to motorhomes looked a bit suspect and I imagine most would think it for flushing the waste tank. It is the only MSP like this I recall coming across on a CMC site.

We are actually on Northbrook Farm...the facs have (apparently) subsided and are out of use...hence no facs...

BTW...there is a caravan with a Smart car adjacent....Malcolm, perhaps?

Those grey water drains are really confusing. Presumably the drain in the road is for emptying your tank. I think we would need to drive with the taps to our left to able to position our drain tap over it. Difficult if one way road or it will stop other vans going past.

No, we only saw it move once, mind we were out a lot, and our last night was on pitch next to it. They had a big 4x4 with the outfit, I am guessing they were probably having three weeks on a Site and moving on. They didn’t bother anyone, as it was serviced in the evenings when most comings and going’s were quiet. What impressed us was how careful they were with grass. It had hydraulic suspension, so there appeared little weight on the wheels. Never seen an outfit as big on a Site like Marazion, more common up at Exeter. Must have been a tight squeeze through Goldsithney village close to Site.

Dont know Northbrook, somewhere SE I am guessing. Could well be Malc if so.
Edit, DK mentions Worthing, sorry I missed that😊

The MSP at Barnard Castle is similar DK, next door to an SP. if you are on one of the pitches beyond this point on the Site, you have to go back out and through the barriers to fill and empty. Considering how recent BC Site is, this seems poorly considered to us. Confess we don’t know Site well, we only had the one night.
