Brexit 2018 - Travelling to Europe

Regardless of where you stand on the Brexit debate, two years ago many members were saying that they would do the British thing: Keep calm and carry on regardless.

That was then and this is now. Very few, if any of us, have had any influence over the negotiations that have happened since the last thread on this subject. It now seems that we are looking into the maw of a no-deal Brexit with all of the old pre-EU checks and controls coming back into force. (Yes, I am old enough to remember them and as a young soldier posted in BAOR, experienced them more than most.)

We have also seen the value of Sterling declining and the closer we seem to get to the precipice of no-deal, the worst the exchange rate gets.

So, will you still travel to Europe in the way that you have before, or will you change your habits?

I went into Austria by both car and train 2016 and last year and didn’t experience any delays and certainly didn’t have to show my passport.  Yes there were border police on the train leaving Salzburg but they didn’t pay any obvious attention to me.  Guess I’m just lucky 🍀

  • There have been long delays on the Austrian side of the border every year since we started going that way in 2014,   most recently 29th August this year. You can believe it or not ,it's what we saw..

Hi David from your experiences how much border delay time would you factor in for travel times to Croatia?

In 2016, which was our last trip to Europe to Austria,Germany and France, we encountered police checks between countries but both times we were just waved through with hardly any delay other than slowing down. But of course that was due to local difficulties rather than anything likely to be caused by Brexit or not as the case may be. We must continue to play the waiting game on that.

We have had no problem entering Austria but entering Germany  near Salzburg has been up to an hour and thats without even showing our passports, just being slowed down enough for the border people to divert out the folks they are interested in. However we entered Germany from Austria at Bregenz at thje end of Lake Constance without a hitch.

Thanks David probably add on an hour just in case.

ps not sure if you are back yet but did you get my email for further info you offered on Croatia
