New Waste Arrangements

It seems that new waste arrangements are in place at Pembrey Country Park and are being introduced at Gowerton and other club sites. The reason given by wardens is health & safety as there have been increasing waste volumes and unacceptable waste eg syringes and medical waste. The new arrangement is for zero disposal at the usual service points and a single point at the site entrance with large disposal high bins. Whilst understanding the real concerns regarding wardens handling unsafe waste there are a number of initial first thoughts which make me wonder whether this has been thought through properly.

Some members have limited mobility and cannot regularly walk with waste as far as the site entrance. For those with cars maybe this could be done by driving to the entrance but the extra traffic on site will not be welcome and some do not have cars. The height of the bins is approx  chest height. How will someone in a wheelchair manage? This seems to reduce accessibility for disabled members. As regular disposal of waste will be more difficult and users don’t want to keep full bin bags in their vans there will be a temptation to leave full bags of waste outside attracting vermin and scattering of waste. I would guess this will be more of a problem when there is a visiting fish& chip/ pizza van and it is a rainy evening!  Carrying glass bottles all the way across site will potentially lead to more glass breakage too.  Maybe a sensible compromise would be to have larger waste bins at the usual disposal points to be collected by waste collectors. Almost certainly  the glass recycle bins at Pembrey could be deposited around the site rather than at the entrance and lower height access bins could be considered for those needing them. What do others think?

"I am also not sure that local authorities do collect sharps boxes as we have to dispose of ours at the surgery"

Our's does, the only aspect of this I do not like is that you have to leave at your front door the evening before collection and mysteriously it has vanished and replaced by a new one by the next morning undecided, unlikely anyone would want to steal a full sharps box but it just feels a bit unsafe.

Weird System That, Rufs , do you have to pre-order a collection / replacement undecided ! ??

My sharpie bin gets swapped for a new one every 6 months or so at the Pharmacy from where all my goodies come. I've never asked them what they do with them, but, being attached physically to the surgery I have no doubt that the two lots are all collected at the same time and then incinerated together.

Our pharmacy does not take sharps boxes only give them out so OH has been instructed to take them to our local deschetterie where there is a special disposal area for sharp boxes and very secure it is to, he has 1 small box in the house and a larger in his shed once that is full then it is taken to be disposed of as above.

Interesting re the news of waste arrangements on some sites and have used the system at Malvern site and no issues with it as it is much the same as we have here rubbish in car and go to local waste point ours about half a mile general waste recycling and glass just wish the locals could be a bit tidier but it is holiday time.

Are you really saying that PHS is contracted by CAMC to dispose of clinical waste, i.e. waste produced from healthcare and similar activities that may pose a risk of infection, for example, swabs, bandages, dressings etc. or may prove hazardous, for example medicines? Or, as I suspect, are you confusing that with the disposal of waste such as sanitary products and nappies, and etc.? There's a world of difference.

Ask a phs driver what he would expect to be collecting from sites as both could be in the boxes he exchanges ,it could be eithersurprised

Sharps here have been collected from the door step - e mail to council, put the box outside & it mysteriously disappears!  Never seen it collected.  However, we have no found where we can take it at the tip which as it is just down the road is, we feel, more secure.  New boxes come via prescription.

Clinical waste is any waste that could be contaminated by blood  Or by any other bodily fluids / substances or items that may carry infection .

Having recently been to Gowerton, didn't find any inconvenience with walking approximately the same distance to the entrance bins as the closed off old areas for waste disposal. S

On a couple of days pulled up in the car on the way out for the day.

The destructions printed on the envelope provided when checking in were quite clear and explained things.

Yes, there was an instance of people not bothering doing what was required and dumping waste on the ground in the old area.  They must have known they were doing it as the areas were taped off in 3 dimensions.
