New Waste Arrangements

It seems that new waste arrangements are in place at Pembrey Country Park and are being introduced at Gowerton and other club sites. The reason given by wardens is health & safety as there have been increasing waste volumes and unacceptable waste eg syringes and medical waste. The new arrangement is for zero disposal at the usual service points and a single point at the site entrance with large disposal high bins. Whilst understanding the real concerns regarding wardens handling unsafe waste there are a number of initial first thoughts which make me wonder whether this has been thought through properly.

Some members have limited mobility and cannot regularly walk with waste as far as the site entrance. For those with cars maybe this could be done by driving to the entrance but the extra traffic on site will not be welcome and some do not have cars. The height of the bins is approx  chest height. How will someone in a wheelchair manage? This seems to reduce accessibility for disabled members. As regular disposal of waste will be more difficult and users don’t want to keep full bin bags in their vans there will be a temptation to leave full bags of waste outside attracting vermin and scattering of waste. I would guess this will be more of a problem when there is a visiting fish& chip/ pizza van and it is a rainy evening!  Carrying glass bottles all the way across site will potentially lead to more glass breakage too.  Maybe a sensible compromise would be to have larger waste bins at the usual disposal points to be collected by waste collectors. Almost certainly  the glass recycle bins at Pembrey could be deposited around the site rather than at the entrance and lower height access bins could be considered for those needing them. What do others think?

Surely anyone who has to use sharps has their own small sharps bin.

Asking sites to provide these IMO is a step to far.

I've noticed that a lot of these big bins on sites are now lighter weight plastic type construction not the heavy roll top ones. Bottles paper and plastics seem to have 'ports' to deposit items in rather than having to lift lids. Its usually just general waste that you need to lift lids.

I'm all for the use of large bins.  At Malvern they had several for different types of waste and all clearly marked, even so quite a lot of stuff was placed in the wrong bins. Any suggestions as to what this says about the membership? laughing

Even if you have devised an "idiot proof" setup, it's not long before a MkII idiot turns up.

Seems to work fine on lots of other sites we visit that has this kind of set up.

Drink less wine/beer create less bottles. laughing

To be honest we find having the bins at the entrance better. No one banging bin lids at unearthly hours, no congregating of folk at water points waste areas. If you are unfortunate to be pitched near them it can be very annoying.

Much less work for the wardens which is a good thing.

If it stops the wardens charging round the site on those noisy tractors then its a win win laughinglaughing

Totally agree, much better out of the way. Not much fun if you're near one of the glass bins on site. We noticed on one site we use that there is also a bin area curfew between certain hours due to the proximity of a few pitches. The bin area gets locked overnight.

I suppose if on site, rather than by the gate, that’s where the wheelie bin sort score. Those who are considerate can lower the bottles in rather than throw them, unless they are totally empty it makes a lot less noise. Not the case with the big sort, they just make a racket.😀

The easy way to prevent noise from wine bottles being dropped into bins is to buy wine in boxes, they can be silently disposed ofsmile Also no difficult decisions to make on whether you should finish the bottle or keep it for the next daycool

spending hours collecting up scores of small bins and taking them to a central point, with a tractor and trailer, cant be economical use of time, can it?

folk drift in and out of site all day and dropping the recycling off as the larger bins are passed has to be huge saving for wardens, as for the noise mentioned earlier...

ive seen them outside the site barrier on C&CC sites and sites weve abroad...

no disturbance for guests, even when the truck comes to exchange or empty the large bins. makes it easy for the truck driver, too.

Clinical waste is disposed of on cc sites by PHS contractor who the club are charged for as any non medical premises and sharps bins either orange or yellow will be an extra chargewink

Posted on 08/08/2021 16:09

Are you really saying that PHS is contracted by CAMC to dispose of clinical waste, i.e. waste produced from healthcare and similar activities that may pose a risk of infection, for example, swabs, bandages, dressings etc. or may prove hazardous, for example medicines? Or, as I suspect, are you confusing that with the disposal of waste such as sanitary products and nappies, and etc.? There's a world of difference.
