Mayday and Caravan Storage

Hi,

This is just a heads up for people who have Mayday breakdown cover and store their caravan at a storage site.

In my naivety, I always assumed that in the event of any issues with my car Mayday would pick me up, drop off my caravan at our storage site, which is about six miles from my home, and then take my car back to my home address, or a local garage. It turns out that this is not the case. Apparently they will take my car and van to my caravan storage site and then leave me there to my own devices. Alternatively, they will take me to my home address and then leave both my car and van there (not an option for me as the van won't fit on my drive}. The choice is yours, it's either one or the other.

This only came to light last year when one of our centre members had to use Mayday, and both their broken down car and caravan where deposited at their storage site. They then had to arrange for a garage to recover the car to their home address. On contacting the Caravan Club after the event they were given sympathy but told sorry, those are the conditions of Mayday membership.

I have to say I am a little disappointed with the Caravan Club and Mayday. I pay over £100 a year for their breakdown cover and it does seem a bit poor that onward recovery, especially where it is fairly local, is not provided. Does anybody know how Arrival or Britannia Rescue would deal with this situation?

Anyway, the main point of this post is just to highlight this issue for Club members who store their caravans at a storage site.  Fortunately I've never had to use Mayday's services, and yes, I have been naive in not reading the small print. Apparently it's on page 6 of the policy document!

Happy caravanning.

Is there anyone else on here who has two policies with Green Flag.... e.g. one with Mayday cover with the CAMC and another as inclusive Greenflag cover as part of a bank account e.g. a Natwest account?

What I want to establish is if I can be recovered to storeage under my Mayday policy and then, without having to call out another recovery van, be recovered straight away from storage to either home or to my repairers.

I shall try and get a difinitive answer to this next week.  I dont particularly want to get to storage and the have to ring again for someone else.

Wish me luck!

Hi JVB66,

In your scenario, after 1 and 2 have happened, the answer to 3 is no.

Your final recovery back from your trip would offer you the choice of taking both vehicles to your storage, at which point you would need to arrange to get the car to the garage; or taking both to the garage, at which point you would need to arrange to get the caravan to the storage.

This is the crux of the ‘double-drop’ issue that we are discussing here, which is not currently offered, but we hope to be able to introduce, and meanwhile there are occasions where cover may be provided ‘outside’ the terms and conditions, as a gesture of goodwill at the discretion of the Mayday recovery operator.

I wish they would sort this out1, I broke down last March only 5 miles from the storage and were kept waiting for 5 hours before the truck turned up. He loaded the car on the truck and hitched the van up and took the caravan to the storage and then the car to the garage (there was no humming or harring). We were left there and we had to get a taxi home. We broke down again a month later this time only 65 miles from the site, again it took 5 hours to get a truck to us, but we were taken onto our site and were told that a truck would be there the next day to take the car to a garage. We declined that offer as he couldn't guarantee a time.

But to be able to get more or less the same cover from the C&CC through the RAC will cost me over £100,00 more just so that I can have the peace of mind about double drop. Is it worth it?

For some the alternative might be £30 for a local up to 10 mile recovery policy but I shall check out relay when ours is up for renewal

It seems that for many years the CC has mislead us regarding the Mayday coverage.  We have been paying the Premium rate in the belief that all eventualities would be covered so in essence we have been paying the extra for nothing!  Do we claim the extra we have been paying form the CC or from Green Flag?

Also although paying the extra our Jeep in some cases requires a Jeep franchise dealer to do the repair plus we have a service contract with the franchised dealer even though the Jeep is 6 years old.  It also has a complete Jeep service history which adds value to it.  Unfortunately this Jeep dealer is 65 miles from out home.

Where does that leave us?

We have only had two breakdowns in 8 years fo ownership of Jeeps.  the first was shortly after we purchased the Jeep.  The rear brake shoes fell apart.  It seemed that the previous owner never used the handbrake.  Secondly was when it went into limp mode due to a faulty sensor.

So overall Jeep seems a lot more reliable that many of the BMWs, LRs around our neck of the woods that we see by the side of the road. BTW our 2005 Jeep was not associated with Fiat in anyway.

However whatever you are driving you want peace of mind and not the rubbish recovery Mayday is offering!

@ Surfer .....   It also has a complete Jeep service history which adds value to it.

Does it?

PS I'd suggest a lot of auto drivers don't use the hand/parking brake ..... I rarely do but that's not resulted on the shoes falling apart.

Whilst the club are hopefully sorting out this debacle those of us who feel they need a secondary cover to ensure they can get their vehicles where they need to be could possibly do worse than have a look on Groupon where you can get basic cover for very little expense

Without doubt it does help add value to the vehicle.  I thought any one that is a responsible driver would engage the handbrake also instead of just shifting the vehicle into Park as that is laziness however we digress.  laughing
