Mayday and Caravan Storage

Hi,

This is just a heads up for people who have Mayday breakdown cover and store their caravan at a storage site.

In my naivety, I always assumed that in the event of any issues with my car Mayday would pick me up, drop off my caravan at our storage site, which is about six miles from my home, and then take my car back to my home address, or a local garage. It turns out that this is not the case. Apparently they will take my car and van to my caravan storage site and then leave me there to my own devices. Alternatively, they will take me to my home address and then leave both my car and van there (not an option for me as the van won't fit on my drive}. The choice is yours, it's either one or the other.

This only came to light last year when one of our centre members had to use Mayday, and both their broken down car and caravan where deposited at their storage site. They then had to arrange for a garage to recover the car to their home address. On contacting the Caravan Club after the event they were given sympathy but told sorry, those are the conditions of Mayday membership.

I have to say I am a little disappointed with the Caravan Club and Mayday. I pay over £100 a year for their breakdown cover and it does seem a bit poor that onward recovery, especially where it is fairly local, is not provided. Does anybody know how Arrival or Britannia Rescue would deal with this situation?

Anyway, the main point of this post is just to highlight this issue for Club members who store their caravans at a storage site.  Fortunately I've never had to use Mayday's services, and yes, I have been naive in not reading the small print. Apparently it's on page 6 of the policy document!

Happy caravanning.

The problem as the OP and would also affect us as our C/van in a  storage compound , which is still not clearly defined is

1 We breakdown with the C/van on the hook on our way to holiday. and are relayed to our destination

2 Tow vehicle not repaired so need a relay back to storage at end of holiday

3 Will green flag then take our car to a local main dealer then  take us and dog to our home address?

Will the dog be carried?

Why?  If you go to Green Flag and accept their quote there should not be any problems as technically two different entities.

Surfer....I was referring to the Interim period.....in that I suspect it may well be quite some time before the "double drop" element is agreed between the Club (Mayday) and Green Flag who in turn have to agree the amendment with all of their independent contractors. (Green Flag do not have their own fleet of recovery vehicles)

That is where another problem would arise as it depends on the company/driver at the time we have had both scenarios on one occasion tour dog was with us in the breakdown vehicle and next she  had to be in the car on the transporter, which was fine as it was a level flatbed, but not sure if it had as some a sloping rear

Depends on the dog (or dogs too JVB). My Lab would have been happy in the car on a flat bed. I don't think that my German Shep would have been.

Not sure how one would cope with several dogs

Our dog would not be at all happy.  Personally, I would tell the person when initially ring and say I would be quite happy to wait until a dog friendly vehicle becomes available.  I would certainly be happier to wait than to risk leaving our dog alone in the car.  She's only small and absolutely no bother when she is with us - but she has separation anxiety.  If we left her on her own in the car: firstly, she would get upset and stressed;  secondly, she would systematically start dismantling the interior of the vehicle; thirdly, I have great concern about leaving dogs in vehicles especially if its a hot day - leaving the window slightly open doesnt always do the job!

Fortunately, in the past, we have always been able to take her in the cab with us - she just sits on Carol's lap and goes to sleep.

After doing another check with Green flag (Mayday) we have now decided to go for Rac arrival (ccc)until the caravan club sort out the problems when a caravan is in storage, and for the first year we also get "free" ccc membership (so two firsts for us)which works out cheaper all round as it will all start on 1st March when Mayday expiressurprised

All good JVB. I did not know that the inclusive membership to C&CC was running at present and thought that it was just the £15 site voucher.

Next renewal if CC have not produced a better deal I might well join you

Went on ccc site to look for arrival and up came two options one for non members giving free membership £49 and the other giving £15 voucher to members,,just see if all the info comes in the one packsurprised

ps as a very "old cc member" i no longer pay for membership, so i would be no worse of next year if cc have not got Mayday sorted although arrival is more expensive it covers what we need and the older one gets the less stress is needed

We were C&CC club members from Dec 2017 for the first time JVB and so used over one full season. In truth we joined to use two sites in particular for their location (Braithwaite Fold and Moffat) we did also use Salisbury, Canterbury, Polstead and St Neots for location. We were not keen on Salisbury as it was very open and boring with little trees - bit like being on a plain really laughing but did like its location. We also used obe of their affiliated sites in the borders

That would be fun for those with a very large dog.
