Is it a rip off?

Hi I have a rant to get off my chest

Just booked a site for 21 nights for an eye watering £540!   After I got back on my feet I was informed that Caravan and Motor home club have increased their Easter fees this week two weeks early.  Why I ask. even the management were embarrassed and thought it were shocking.

I spent 5 nights last week on a fabulous caravan and camping club site in heart of Northumberland with all the facilities and with over 60s discount £8 pn!

After only just re-joining I cannot  see the benefits of staying with  C&M club prices are beyond out reach.

spent more time over there than you BB so why should it not interest?

OK how about the North Shield ferry on Monday? I'll bring a packed lunch for both of us and a few bottles of over there wine (mind you is there any other worth drinking?) smile

With some of the "mis information"/"quotes being posted from some quarters  monitoring is essential wink

No, I do not think so.  We set a budget for our trips and have a pretty good idea of what we will spend, so we have a maximum price for sites.  In UK this is an average of £20 per night, elsewhere we aim for no more than the equivalent of £15.

Do other people not set themselves any spending boundaries?

On our recent 4 week trip in Scotland, we could  not have achieved a £20 average,  and have used only Club sites, and the same will apply on our next trip. We did check prices carefully before booking anything.

Yes, we were away in the period leading up to Easter, from 25th March, but this is the same time as we usually go away each year. Easter weekend will of course be a peak period for prices, but the "peak" is much longer here than we find in other countries, and peak prices seem to be being charged for longer and longer periods these days.

As a result we used one Club site before the prices increased for Easter, two CCC sites as they do not charge peak prices in Scotland for Easter, plus we get the age related discount, and two CLs, one £15 per night and one £12 per night.

Had there been any suitable no facility Club sites in the area, we could have used them, but there were not.  The Club sites that we did not use because of the prices were Stonehaven, Culloden near Inverness, Forfar Lochside, and Balbirnie in Fife.

Our next trip starting in June will use probably only one Club site, we have booked Garlieston as our first stop.  After that we may possibly stop a couple of nights in the Lakes, that will be a CCC site, then we are heading to North Wales, where we used to use LMP at Chirk, but will instead book the same CL we used there last year, which has toilet, shower and serviced pitches, not that we will use the shower as we prefer to use our own.

Beyond that we have decided nothing, but are thinking to roam around Wales using either CCC sites and/or CLs as this will keep us within our budget. OH has checked Club site prices and found that most are beyond what we are happy with.

When DD was at school we always headed south, using Club sites, as late June and the first 2-3 weeks in July were not peak in England, but this is no longer the case on many Club sites.  Peak periods are increasing and additional higher priced periods have been introduced, outside of school holidays, and this is what makes us feel that we are being priced out of using Club sites for much of the year.

Everyone obviously has their own spending priorities and their own take on good value.

If someone perceives they are being priced out because of the way they budget for holidays then I think it's fair to accept their comments?

apparently not, Brueundecided

Yes, but it doesn't address the point that choosing to use alternatives (as many of us do for all sorts of reasons) is not the same as being "priced out"  does it?

Kjell, we found some nice CL sites in South/Mid Wales, let me know if of any interest. Some had loos and showers, some not, but all were very nice. One with a laundry as well, useful on a longer tour.

Ah but you have imposed a special circumstance there EasyT, you want a new car. Perfectly possible to find a tow car under £12k, but not perhaps a new one!

The other thing is, it might indeed be perfectly possible to tour using a Club Site as a benchmark. All you have to do is take Nunnykirk as your bench mark, as we did last year. No facilities, grass pitches. It was our dearest site on our tour of Northumberland and Borders. Other sites offered HS, sometimes a loo, most came in under £14 per night, and very nice they were as well.😁

Not a special term really. When talking of sites of a similar standard to the club I am talking about the majority of CC sites with facilities not the likes of Nunnykirk which I think is a great site but such CC sites are few and far between and I do use them when  in the right place for a tour but not specifically to save money. I don't need on site facilities but generally like hardstand and good roadways coupled with easy waste, water, elsan points etc. One of the reasons that C&CC sites are second choice, for me particularly, isthat their showers are of little use to me as one is generally unable to regulate water temperature which rapidly becomes painfully hot for me.
