72 hour cancellation rule

Now I am sure everyone is aware of the 72 hour rule which I have just fallen foul of due to a genuine medical problem. Surely the Club could be  a little bit more tolerant of this? I had an eye inflamation which started at the weekend, went to hopsital and was told that I cannot drive for 5 days due to the medication I am on. Now I had a booking starting yesterday, which I phoned the site and explained why I would not be there prior to attending hospital, and said that I was not sure if I would be able to get to the site. Now that was no problem as was having to cancel my stay today but I was told the Club would send me a nice email saying that I should not cancel that close to the time. Now I had no choice and I am slightly aggrieved by this as it was completely out of my control. I know why the rule was introduced but for genuine cancellations it is a little harsh. If I was a non-member cancelling then I would not get this "black" mark against me which is somewhat discriminatory.

Predicting the weather is still not an exact science, I would have waited a little longer to see what materialised, perhaps even to the morning of departure.

Forecast is pretty grim for this Sunday, P.D. As a caravaner I wouldn’t fancy towing in such high winds and don’t blame Stuart for cancelling his trip.

As members of the CMC we have things pretty easy. We can book up to a year ahead should we wish to. We can cancel anytime up to 72 hours before arrival on site with no penalty. It doesn't stop there either, unlike the majority of private UK sites we don't have to pay a deposit or  as an increasing number of sites do, require full payment a month ahead of arrival. So having to pay on arrival is a major advantage over virtually every other non CMC site in the UK. Is there a downside, well a mild wrap over the knuckles if you cancel late or the forfeit of a night's site fees should you leave a site earlier than planned and can't give the warden 72 hours prior notice of that departure. If you move to another Club site you won't forfeit any money. So in the context of the UK, as I say we have it very easy.

Agree it looks bad but like I say it is not an exact science. Even last night there was uncertainty in the forecast. I don't think the OP was that keen on going what ever the weather, It also sounds as though he/she was not interested in modifying plans to work around the weather. I would have left it much later to decide what to do. Last year, with a high wind forecast, I travelled a few hours early to avoid an incoming blow. Cancelling was the last resort and if necessary would have been made on the day due on site.

Maybe, as a motorhomer you'd be more inclined to leave it late, PD, but there's no way I'd have risked towing given the consistency of the forecasts since midweek. We've only once cancelled anywhere because of a bad weather forecast - a CL - and I felt so guilty I sent the owner payment for our 3 booked days anyway! smile

I agree M. The forecasts were nailed on enough to make towing a caravan much to high a risk. Not everyone is able to vary their plans and leave early ahead of the storm, or come back later afterwards. Now we have a MH I have certainly noticed a difference in what I will travel in. Ours at least handles a lot better than our caravan and tow car. However, the 50 to 60 mph they are predicting here, would certainly keep me at home.

February 2020 and nothing has changed. I just cancelled with 68 hours to go because the weather man on tv is telling me that there'll be 70 mph gales on the day I was due to travel.

The automatic computer generated email arrived very promptly with it's threatening response despite me calling to explain the circumstances. Surely the club could override the computer in such circumstances.

Hi StuartE,

I just want to assure you, we will not be penalising members for genuine cancellation reasons. By no means do we want members to put themselves at risk by travelling when it is not safe to do so.

If there were three instances of late cancellations within the calendar year, we would review the circumstances around each cancellation using any notes held on the system, and would contact you if further information was required. I hope this helps clarify the situation and I will let the site team know that you found the email threatening for their reference as we appreciate feedback from our members.
