72 hour cancellation rule

Now I am sure everyone is aware of the 72 hour rule which I have just fallen foul of due to a genuine medical problem. Surely the Club could be  a little bit more tolerant of this? I had an eye inflamation which started at the weekend, went to hopsital and was told that I cannot drive for 5 days due to the medication I am on. Now I had a booking starting yesterday, which I phoned the site and explained why I would not be there prior to attending hospital, and said that I was not sure if I would be able to get to the site. Now that was no problem as was having to cancel my stay today but I was told the Club would send me a nice email saying that I should not cancel that close to the time. Now I had no choice and I am slightly aggrieved by this as it was completely out of my control. I know why the rule was introduced but for genuine cancellations it is a little harsh. If I was a non-member cancelling then I would not get this "black" mark against me which is somewhat discriminatory.

Paying up front can be a good thing M. It encourages people not to book way way ahead at least giving impromtu touring a better chance of finding pitches.

In less used areas maybe,at peak, but not the popular areas of the UK at peak periods, it has never been a problem off peak, except for the well known "hotspots"

"It is a lot easier and reasonable if one pays on departure"

"Paying up front can be a good thing"

You do realise that you've agreed with both those statements now, DD? Hope you haven't been sniffing that turps while decorating! laughing

As members of the CMC we have things pretty easy. We can book up to a year ahead should we wish to. We can cancel anytime up to 72 hours before arrival on site with no penalty. It doesn't stop there either, unlike the majority of private UK sites we don't have to pay a deposit or  as an increasing number of sites do, require full payment a month ahead of arrival. So having to pay on arrival is a major advantage over virtually every other non CMC site in the UK. Is there a downside, well a mild wrap over the knuckles if you cancel late or the forfeit of a night's site fees should you leave a site earlier than planned and can't give the warden 72 hours prior notice of that departure. If you move to another Club site you won't forfeit any money. So in the context of the UK, as I say we have it very easy.
