La Bien Assise
Not used this site for a holiday but it makes a very good first and last night stopover with everything you need and you would not think it's only 30mins from the Calais ferries.
Quite good but could be so much better
We have stayed at this site many times in the last 25 years. The staff are always helpful, the grass and shrubbery are very well maintained and the location is first class for the major cross channel routes. There is a first class restaurant and a brasserie for families.
However, there are three main issues we have:
1 the shower facilities need re-furbishing. Quite simply, supplying more space to hang clothes and a larger shelf plus proper shower heads.
2 occasionally there are rowdy elements in the many mobile homes available for rent.
3 this area is susceptible to rain and the grass pitches quickly get water logged giving problems for tents, awnings and tyre tracks moving off. Surely an investment in hard standings would prove worth while in the long term.
stuck in the mud
Couldn't disagree with all the positive reviews of this site, however...
Maybe it's just me who's a rubbish driver but I've been stuck in the mud on pitches here twice. But then again, judging from the wheel marks all over the place, I might not be alone.
Considering the amount of rain there's been, particularly this year, and the space they have available, I would think Castels - who can't be exactly short of a Euro or two - could make more of the motorhome pitches hard-standing. Apart from easing worries when having a morning ferry/train to catch, it would also make life easier for the staff.
Very Good Site!!
We have used this site on several occasions as an overnight stop prior taking the tunnel/ferry back to the UK.
Friendly, helpful staff, good pitches and facilities. Convenient for the short drive to the tunnel. Unable to comment on the longer-term use of the site, but it appears to have family-orientated benefits: pool, restaurant, basic shop, wifi (charges apply). Can't really think of any minus points worth mentioning.
Use for Channel Crossing
This site is approx 15 minutes tow from the Channel Tunnel and we have used it twice (2014 & this year) for that reason alone. They have put a new road in between Guines and the coast motorway which makes it even easier. The site is pleasant but has a bit of road noise depending on where you are pitched. The pitches are not regimented but placed at random amongst mature trees and shrubs. Facilities are good and staff helpful. We particularly enjoy the onsite restaurant. It is fairly expensive (captive audience?) but we have always had good meals here. Strongly recommend reserving a table as it is usually busy. Only stayed here as an overnight stop so don't know if there is much to do in the local area.
Coming home!
Use this site every time we go to Europe. A short distance from Calais and conveniently close to Cite D'Europe shopping centre for last minute bargains!
Lovely site.
As with most people, we , on this occasion, only used the site as an over night stop on the way up from Normandy, to catch the ferry early the next day. We found the staff friendly, with good English ( pity our French wasn't better.), escorted to your pitch, no hunting for pitch numbers, wash rooms, showers and laundry room were very clean and tidy. Would definitely not hesitate to stay again.
Excelent site.
We only stayed one night prior to travelling home through tunnel.
We chose the site because of it's proximity to the channel tunnel and found it to be very good. It is set in nice grounds with level grass pitches. The staff were friendly and escorted us to our pitch. Pool and restaurant looked good but didn't get a chance to use them.
A very nice site
Only stopped one night but would like to revisit at sometime, very friendly English speaking staff and a very nice pitches . The toilets where ok but not great . The restaurant and bar on site where excellent.
OVERNIGHT STAY
Although we only stayed for 1 night we found the site to be well run and clean, with English spoken at the reception. It would be good if the site had provision for recycling, but as we found with other campsites in France there doesn't seem to be the same approach to recycling that we have in the UK.
Overall a very good site which I have no hesitation in recommending to other members.
