Made a return trip to this amazing site. We love this site given that it is easy to access the park, river walks and for the city centre. The wardens are fantastic and very helpful. For the first time we had pitch 8 alongside the car park to the park. We did experience noise at approx 7.30am when the park gates were opened amd the bins emptied. At night , before closing, there was noise from folk playing car radio's in the car park. Can strongly recommend a visit to the Stanley and Ramona Coffee shop at the junction of Vine Street and Bishy Road. If you exit the site via the back gate it is only a few minutes walk away. We will be returning to this site

Another great stay

We have been visiting Rowntree park for many years and after a short break, we are pleased to see it has changed very little and still a great place to stay. On arrival there was a small queue, no worries but I thought they’d introduced a ‘find your pitch’ then book in system? Keith the warden introduced himself and welcomed us to the site. Saw him and the other wardens many times during our stay, busying away keeping the site and facilities spotless. The building work next door was ongoing, but must’ve been at a quiet stage of construction as there was very little noise or dust, in fact the gardeners in Rowntree Park next door were making more noise shredding tree cuttings. We sat outside our caravan for all meals and coffees in the mornings watching and listening to the birds. The site is busy and doesn’t have much grass but it is what you make it, you can still enjoy outside dining and interaction with others. Great location as everyone states and although not linked to the site, York itself was quite dirty with lots of empty shops, rubbish, beggars etc. Shame it’s going the way of many other towns and cities. Sure it survive though as it is a special place. Really enjoyed the stay and booked a couple of times for next year.

Top drawer site

We used this site to visit family in York. We arrived on a Sunday in a queue with at least 6 other motorhomes. The outstandingly friendly staff moved us through check in with the minimum of fuss. The site is clean, well maintained and the staff are so friendly and helpful. As somewhere that has a very high turnover and so deals with lots and lots of people coming and going the site must be one of the busiest we've visited but don't let that put you off, the way the site is laid out makes each berth private and relatively quiet (there was a dawn chorus from the geese in the nearby river Ouse) It's a 15 minute walk to the centre of York, so there's a lot to do very close to the site. We will definitely be using this site again.

Questioning opinions

I do not, as a rule, put pen to paper but I must contradict the opinions of this site expressed by Snoopygold. In my opinion Rowntree Park is a very well kept site run by an enthusiastic, sociable and dedicated team of helpful wardens. It must be the busiest site on the network and regularly sees daily turnovers in excess of 50% of the units. We are frequent visitors, building our stays of up to a week to visit grandchildren in York, often at short notice. The location is excellent for walking into the city but access is tight in the latter stages hence the need for controlled timings. The hotel development next door brings heavier vehicles into the locality at the moment but these movements are supervised by the developer. Yes there is noise during weekday working hours but the Club makes this clear on the website. This is a city site - if peace and quiet is your requirement look elsewhere. We look forward to returning in a few weeks - don’t be put off by a single review.

Rowntree site

Well I must say I only ever use club sites, and motorhome all year around, I spend a lot of money with the club. Rowntree site mmmm I’ve tried for 2 years to get into this site, 2 years wasted dream I’m not sure what all the fuss is about, only the fact that it is easy to get into York itself. On arrival at 12 noon as requested we were met with a massive queue of agitated people trying to enter the site, when we eventually entered the site, the wardens in the office were not nice at all not even a greeting, just wanted to take your money.then once past that obstacle it got worse we were allocated a pitch, no choice it was in a corner our view a brick wall, both my wife and I are partially disabled, we spent sometime putting up a wind break I had to put it just on the grass as I could not get the pins in the ground it took us a hour. The warden can up an said you can take that down, quoting fire break rules, I realise this but it was only 3 inch’s on the grass and other people had done this and nothing said to them. I went to the office to ask why when others were doing the same, the answer I got was we make the rules.i have never come across this in any other site, we’ve always been greeted with a hello good journey and if we can help you we will. Rowntree seems to be a rule to the exception, the noise from the building site opposite is terrible all day long, and the club is still charging premium prices for this, then the rude unhelpful wardens who just seem to want to do as little as possible. Very unhelpful to those who need a little help in their older age, the club really needs to look into this site. So the 2 years wait was not worth it will never go here again, I’ve been given the address of a private site just outside York which I will use in future. This means breaking my rule of only using caravan and motorhome club sites. Shame on you York wardens.

Easy walk to York

We stayed 2 nights here walking into York for a general wander around. The facilities were clean and everything kept neat & tidy around the site. We did visit the Treasurers House (National Trust) at the rear of the Minster & had a bite to eat in the Red House Café in the antiques centre opposite the Tourist Info. They had lovely cakes, soup & light lunches - a quiet café away from the busy streets. Sainsbury's local shop is a short walk from site via the top gate. A busy popular site even though there is building work still ongoing next to the site.

Nothing stays the same......

We are frequent visitors to Rowntree Park and have just had an enjoyable one week stay - the sun shone! Since they have cut down most of the trees within the site boundary Rowntree Park is much better and appears much more open. As anyone who has been to the site previously will know that the place became one big site instead of two smaller ones some time ago and this works very well. Still only a ten minute walk into York its location is great and normally a very quiet and peaceful to holiday. However anyone intending to stay at Rowntree Park should be aware that they are currently building a 93 bedroom, 4 storey hotel, right next door and I mean right next door. At the moment there is a great deal of noise especially at 8 o'clock in the morning when work begins. Presently they are just up to the first floor level which, by the looks of it, will have the garage below. The noise from diggers, machines and general disruption is something anyone visiting will have to put up with until the beginning of next year when the hotel will, apparently, be completed. Please also be aware that large lorries are using the same narrow access road to the caravan site to gain entry to, and exit from the building site and you can expect to be held up whilst this traffic does three point turns guided by building site employees. If you know Rowntree Park the building work is right next to the newer part of caravan site so that is where you can expect the most noise there but unfortunately you will hear building work wherever you are on the caravan site and, as normal with building sites, there is also a degree of dirt and dust to be expected. Rowntree Park is a great caravan park - it is probably the best site location wise of any caravan site in York and, if you can put up with what's going on next door you will still have a wonderful time. I'm not sure what its is going to be like, especially access wise, and noise level wise, once the hotel is completed but one thing is for certain - will return to find out (but not for some time).

Excellent stay as usual

We have just left the site today. We have stayed on this site many times in all seasons of the year. We have NEVER had a bad stay. The site is five minutes walk from the city with all the hustle and bustle that city life brings. It’s not going to be quiet, a very small price to pay for the convenience of a city centre site. The wardens are friendly and keep the site looking clean and tidy. The pitches are divided by hedges which have to be trimmed at some point. What can the caravan club do about the hotel being built? Nothing whatsoever. There is a statement online to advise about the noise and disturbance, but they don’t work at the weekend. If you want to sit in the sun why go to a city centre site. We will very much look forward to our next visit.

Disappointing

The site was disappointing for us for a few reasons. The facilities are clean and tidy but dated and we thought for the premium of the site these should be better. There's nowhere for children to play on the site - it is near a park but we would never let our 6 year old go there by himself. The hotel being built next to the site created noise digging, banging, clattering all day long so the site is not relaxing. The receptionist didn't seem very happy and it seemed a hassle to help people. The ground staff decided to cut the grass in the evening when people were trying to sit out (also creating a loud noise). Its quite a compact site trying to squeeze as many pitches in as possible. By far the most expensive site we've stayed at. One the plus side its brilliant if you want to walk into York but other than that I'd stay else where and visit York for the day. We've got other dates booked here that we will be cancelling.
