Great for the city

I can only echo all the other great reviews. An excellent city site with everything you want all within walking distance. If you have done the sites of York, then there's the train to some beautiful places. We have been before and will come again. Just a thank you to the staff who phoned me, as I had misread my booking dates, and for sorting it out. Excellent customer service.

What an enjoyment j

Brilliant site well appointed and vigorously maintained. Pitches are all a good size with hedged demarcations. The Wardens were very, very customer focused and superb Ambassadors for the Club. Will be returning soon if I can get a long enough booking as it is a popular site. Wish other flag ship sites were of this standard. To the Wardens, thank you very much.

great site

This is a great site, slightly spoiled with the new hotel being constructed, but still a great location. the only problem with this site is trying to book it. You can log on within a minute of opening and all weekend will be booked. OK if you only want a couple of days mid week, but impossible to book a longer break. We were taking to others on site while we were there and they were saying it has taken years to try and get on this site. Having said that, if you do succeed in getting a booking, it is worth the wait.

Great site in the center of York

This site is great to visit York no need to use the car once on site, my wife is disabled and can't walk long distances without a break and we found lots of places to sit and let her rest a while. Arrived on a Sunday set up and asked the warden for a local place to have Sunday lunch, he wasn't sure but recommended the Mason's Arms just over the bridge. We had a very nice lunch and beer was good too. Not the quietest of sites the normal city sounds are quite loud and the building work next door can get noisy. Site it self is well looked after and the wardens are a happy and friendly bunch.

white line

we pitched on corner pitch to blue marker as requested then we were told that we had pitched wrong and that we needed to pitch at an angle to the blue marker on white line... the white line they were referring to was a faint sprinkling of stones. apart from this small hiccup we had an excellent time.

Flagship site but not perfect

We have never stayed on this site before as we have always used Beechwood Grange or a private site in Stockton on Forest. We came for a family reunion as I was born and brought up in York and have revisited regularly. Rowntrees Park site is in an ideal location for visitors who wish to soak up the history and shopping as it is a short walk along the river bank to the start of the Bar Walls. I would recommend turning left once you reach Skeldergate Bridge and join the walls to continue clockwise round them, you will finish up on the other side of Skeldergate Bridge for a short stroll back to the site. The site itself is "compact" and totally hard standing.with 1 metre hedges between pitches. To comply with fire stipulations the pitching arrangement is not the usual car/caravan/awning but the pitches do have plenty of space. We found the staff very helpful and friendly and were kept busy keeping the site and toilet block clean and handling the constant flow of vans in and out. The toilet block was very well equipped, the male block had 10 showers for 89 pitches on site which is a much higher ratio than I have seen elsewhere. Other reviewers' complaints about construction noise adjacent to the site may be true but that is outside club control and will be over within 12 months. The more long term noise nuisance comes from the children's play area in Rowntrees Park itself which is immediately behind the tall hedge at the back of the site, this includes the sound of skate boards as well, this will be most obvious at weekends and during school holidays. The access to the site with your caravan or motorhome is narrow in places and because it is through a terraced residential area contains legally parked vehicles at the roadside. It is perfectly negotiable provided one sticks to the club's posted entry and exit times, so don't arrive early like so many I saw. The facilities for shopping, eating out and drinking in the area are excellent accessible 5 minutes walk from the site via the pedestrian gate at the rear. I would recommend Angel In The Garden for light snacks, Fisherman's Wife for Fish and Chips to take out or eat in (10% discount for club members and seniors deal) and The Slipp Inn for a real pint of Yorkshire beer on Clementhorpe which you pass on your way into site... Further afield you could dine out at several restaurants with a view of Clifford's Tower, "31 Castlegate" being one we tried, and for entertainment try The Grand Opera House 3 minutes from Clifford's Tower. Last year we went to a Billy Fury Tribute and this year we saw The Drifters there.

Excellent Club Site

Just back from a 5 day holiday at this club site and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Staff were excellent and were very informative regarding any question put to them. Pitches are hard standing with grey chips which were not a problem (would have liked water and drainage on the pitch but sadly not available). Facilities are superb - very clean and well kept. Some local shops are a 5 minute walk from the site where there is a very good Indian Restaurant which gives you discount if you stay on the site. York city centre is a 15 minute walk from the site with many attractions to see (York Minster and Shambles Market to mention a few). Have read a lot of negative reviews for this club site which in my opinion do not agree with. Anyway, we had a good time at this site and we will certainly be back. Thank you Rowntree Park Staff for a memorable holiday.

Ideally located to explore York but mind your peg spacing !!!

We’ve just returned from out 2nd visit to this site in August. The site is ideally located and in easy walking disitance to explore York and it’s attractions. The site and its facilities are well maintained, clean and tidy. You will see from the other comments that there is building work taking place next door. While we were staying we did not notice much noise and the builders tended not to work at weekends. The only negative comment I have is that in 10 years of being a club member I have never been asked to move closer to the pitch peg !! On this occasion I was only 6 inches from the peg and had just set-up. When one of the warden approached us and told us we needed to move over. He asked me to get my caravan ready to be moved and he assist (with the other warden) to move my van over. If spacing is such a major issue then I feel the wardens should escort you to your pitch and assist you in pitching in the correct location. When it became time to leave it was extremely hard / impossible to hook the car on due to the narrow road way the position of the motorvan on the opposite pitch. Luckily I have a motormover fitted which made it possible. My advice would be I watch your peg positioning on this site as the wardens inspect every new arrival.

york holiday

Roundtree park is ideally situated for York and all it has to offer. Havnt been for a couple of years on this site and was very impressed from the arrival to the day of leaving. The standard and cleaniness and groundwork of this site has greatly improved from our last visit. The wardens work hard on site every day from hedge cutting to cleaning of toilet block and it shows. wardens very helpful and welcoming on arrival. Great walks cycle down the river and beautiful park next door as we where in a pitch beside it we did not find the noise from the park disturbing. What we did find noisey was the constant coming and going of vans on this site. As people can only get short bookings there is constant disruption of vans moving. Then there are those who arrive weekend and in the space 5 minutes its dogs barking and letting them pee on your pitch or as I noticed one caravaner got his fresh water barrel urinated on. I found a lack of respect among caravaners on this site or is this new and Im just the old code. But did not stop us from having a good holiday and enjoying York.

Rowntree Park

Rowntree Park is a City centre camp site ideally positioned for visiting York. However that is its main function and most campers retreat to their outfits in the evening. The facilities are good and the staff helpful. It is a popular site and usually full by late afternoon. And other reviewers have covered it well. My only comment is that it is disappointing not to be able to have a pitch without electricity at a discount. We are supposed to be an environmentally friendly club but community paid for electricity, leads to waste and discourages the use of portable PV panels. I was also surprised that there is no dedicated glass recycling.
