Convenient site, very near the city centre. Wardens are excellent in managing a very busy city site. Also convenient for visits to the coast, Leeds and Harrogate. The only down side being the cost of using this site. It is expensive.
Location.. Location...Location of the site and on the site
York Rowntree is the the perfect location for all that York has to offer. We have stayed several times. The last time at Easter and the building noise wasn't too noticeable. This time we were unlucky to be next to the fence adjacent to the building site. The noise started on the stroke of 08:00 and was deafening, no further sleep possible. Another pitch came free and we relocated. This pitch was tucked slightly away and the noise level was then hardly noticeable. So choose your pitch carefully!
Our first and who knows when we'll back
What a great site, wardens brilliant and kept a pitch for us to put our large TA van on. Can't fault location or site. Downside is that even with bookings now on a rolling 12 months we can't get on as it is fully booked for the year. This site is clearly the jewel in the clubs urban sites and that is why you will never be able to get on for the dates you want. What a shame so I can't see us being back for a very long time because we can't get on!!!!
Ideal for visiting York
This was our first visit to York as we have met with the challenges of trying to get a pitch when we could fit it in with work, that said we managed to get a 6 night booking following a cancellation however this was for a non-awning pitch.
We have a twin axle and tow with a T5 VW so had to be allocated a pitch which just happened to be immediately adjacent to the construction site side. There was some confusion that about whether we could have two units on one pitch however we explained that we use the T5 camper as our only tow vehicle. We offered to park it elsewhere on site but were told there wasn’t anywhere else to park it so it would be overlooked this time! However we could use it to sleep in if we wished! A bit confused!
Secondly I think it’s important to know that the construction site noise starts at 8am and finishes at 6pm. There is a little respite at 10am when they have a break! We dealt with this by going out early and returning late. However the caravan was covered in dust, and shook when the digger got too close to the fence. The noise is such that you have to raise your voice in order to hear each other! Remember to close your windows if we want to escape construction dust!
That said this site is immaculately kept and the facilities are very good and spotlessly clean. We could not fault its location as its convenient to walk into the city, there is a cycle path that you can pick up immediate from outside the site, there is a rear gate on the site that goes directly to shops, pubs, wine bars, restaurants and it’s close to the river and the excellent park!
We visited York Minister, The Shambles, took a river cruise in the early evening as it was less crowded, cycled along the Trans Pennine trail all the way to Selby via Ricall and back (29.3 miles) (the route is flat and follows the old East Coast railway line. The first part being called the Solar System cycle path is ideal for children); We took the steam train from Pickering to Whitby – well worth the visit and ride; and took in a mountain bike ride from Sutton Bank on the North Yorkshire moors.
Lots to do and see in a beautiful part of the country! And what made it extra special was that the weather was fantastic! As I said this was our first visit however we plan to return…. once the construction work has been completed of course! 😊
Perfect location
This is in the perfect location for visiting the wonderful city of York, only slightly marred by the hotel being built next door ( only during the day). As its so perfect here we've only managed to get in 3 times over 10 years! Our only gripe is the wifi in the evening, we couldn't even log into our account last night - if YOU are streaming please stop!
First time
Lovely clean and well laid out site. Shower block immaculate with plenty of hot water. Wardens very helpful and friendly. Easy to check in. Great location for York city centre - a 10 minute walk away. Will definitely return.
Word of warning though - the site is very close to the city centre and your satnav may lead you astray in the last mile or so as there are one way streets and bollarded off roads nearby :-)
Handy for york
This site is very handy for a quick trip to york, facilities are spotlessly clean but the site is very busy. No good coming here for peace and quiet. You can walk into York in a few minutes which no other site around can do.
Beautiful, well located site
Been to Rowntree Park on numerous occasions. It is really well situated, within 10 minutes walk to York Town Centre. There is a lovely park next door and the walks along the river bank are great. Really friendly staff always willing to help. Pitch sizes are good, flat and all are close to the fresh water and Elsan and waste water points. Love this site.

Very impressed with the Warden's booking in system here
I have stayed at this site twice before but not since the renovations in 2014/15. The site is excellent for everything to do with visiting York & you can easily catch a bus to the McArthur Glenn shopping outlet. It is great for everyone and as always the toilet facilities etc. were spotless here. A big thank you to all the wardens for this. There is some noise from the large population of nearby geese, if you are a light sleeper, but the adjacent new hotel being built did not cause us any concern as we were pitched towards Rowntree Park side of the camp site and we were there for 5 nights including a weekend. What really impressed me this time was the current Warden's system for booking in. It was the slickest of any I have encountered at the peak arrivals time, which not only made for a quick registration but it was also well managed by the Senior Warden himself to reduce congestion onto the narrow road outside the campsite. Well done that team! As I am sure we would all wish for all the staff were very helpful and engaging and the actual site was the cleanest and most neatly tended I have seen it. The one and only aggravating aspect of the whole 6 days was the regular cutting through of our pitch, right alongside our van windows & bedroom, by the neighbours but the site plan and layout does not allow for this to be stopped despite the warden's best efforts to educate campers it is not polite to do this. Fantastic time once again, 15th to 21st March, 2018
1st Visit
This was our first time at Rowntree and it was as good as expected . The site is fabulously placed for a quick walk into the city with a lovely walk along the river . Next to to the site is a huge playground which is great for children. The shower block as expected for CC clubs was spotless but the water etc was not as accessible as some other CC sites. Our visit was slightly marred by what I can only describe as over zealous wardens which spoilt our stay if I am honest. All in all a fab site , access to cycle ways , the river and the city all within walking distance .
