Internet

York is a fantastic site that we have visited many times over many years. The staff are always brilliant and the facilities are exemplary. However the internet/WiFi is dire. Reception in pubs ,hotels, coffee shops, is far superior to what you get on site. We use WiFi to keep up with family news, nothing that requires mega memory or whatever. Thank god we still enjoy reading books!

Great stay

Stayed a week from 1/9/21. Great welcome from the Managers, Dominic at the barrier & his wife in the office, toilet block spotlessly clean, although I can not understand why when you empty a loo roll it’s left in the cubicle?? Too lazy to pop it in the bin or that’s the Managers job! no it isn’t be responsible & clean up yourself, if you drop it pick it up! (Rant over) No excessive noise from the park we were on pitches 15 & 16, thought the diversion into the site was good and had a great stay.

10pm Lock Out

Stayed here at various times over 20yrs now. The Flood defence work means that the normal scenic route along the Ouse into York is closed completely as a road and more importantly a footpath. We used the locking gate to exit via Vine Street to the local shops and into York, which we have also done in the past. Now the problem, this gate is pad-locked by the wardens at 10pm and only open again at 8am. So even though you are provided with a key to unlock/lock the gate, the padlock applied after 10pm means the only access is via the main barriers. This involves quite a detour probably not far off a further mile to walk or to catch a taxi (apparently circa ÂŁ5.00). I fail to see the point in supplying everyone with a key to the gate and then padlocking it. Wardens state that this has been enforced by the Club's Headquarters and they have no say in the matter. I note that they also allow access through this same gate to people staying in the new adjacent hotel, maybe people have returned there late and this has caused it to be pad-locked. If that's the case then the use by the hotel needs to be terminated or is the Club receiving a monetary benefit by allowing them access. (I know it will be an emergency exit when the Ouse floods) Nowhere on the webpages for Rowntree Park can i see information that there is a 10pm restriction to access the site on foot down Vine Street, thus if you visit any of the restaurants on Bishopthorpe Rd or The Swan or Slip Inn, traditional Pubs nearby then make sure you leave by 9:45pm or be prepared for a long walk. I appreciate that there is normally a quiet time of 11pm-7am at most Club sites, but 10pm is fairly early considering quite a number of people were still sat outside their vans or in awnings talking when we had to be back before 10pm and cars can still access the site from the main entrance. A warden quoted that most people on the site are happy with the gate being additionally locked at 10pm as they feel safer! The road/footpath around the Millennium Bridge at the bottom of Butcher Terrace I would suggest is a lot less safe after 10pm in the dark with no houses nearby and spare land for youths to congregate. As grandparents, we go away for a holiday and break from cooking etc and spend a good amount in cafe's and restaurants in the local community using sites that are ideally within walking distance to those amenities. The locking of this gate spoilt the 5 days we spent there, always having to clock watch when out in the evening. Most restaurants were busy and often available bookings were after 7:30pm. I fail to see the point of issuing everybody with a key to lock/unlock the gate which everybody on the site to our knowledge did religiously then banning the use of the gate for 10hrs evening to morning. It appears from the Clubs actions that we are not to be trusted.

Superb Location

This site is in a great location, on the banks of the Ouse and only 15 minutes on foot from the centre of York. It doesn't look like your average CC site as its all gravel and tarmac, due to the flood risk I suppose. This doesn't detract from it at all and generally the site is up to the club's high standards. I've marked the facilities down to 4 stars because of the staff's eagerness to close the toilets a bit early for cleaning (To 'get a good start' apparently) and I couldn't see an alternative (we don't pay nearly ÂŁ40 a night to use our own facilities, if I wanted to do that I'd pay a fiver for a farmers field). I've also marked the peace and quiet down to 4 stars because of the park next door but overall the site is excellent and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. I'd definitely recommend it to you.

Not as good as usual

We have stopped at York Rowntree on numerous occasions before and have never had any complaints, however on this stay we did not get the expected night time peace and quiet. We were on one of the central pitches, separated from the row behind by a hedge. It was a warm evening so we had plenty of roof vents open, we decided to bed down at about 11.30pm only to find that the occupants of the unit behind the hedge were still sat outside drinking and chatting, I believe with another couple. This noise went on until about 12.30am. We were surprised that these people were not asked to keep quiet earlier by the site staff and to avoid any confrontation we did not communicate with them ourselves.

Great site for York city centre

We have stayed here many times over recent years. We love York and we love this site. So much to do within walking distance (Rowntree park, city centre cafes, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions, riverside walks, racecourse). Good cycle routes nearby as well. Frequent local buses provide access to out of town retail parks. If anyone fancies a day out, away from York, the railway station is a twenty minute to half hour walk away, with frequent trains to Leeds, Scarborough, Harrogate, Durham, to name a few. The wardens are very friendly, work really hard and keep the facilities spotlessly clean at what must be one of the busiest sites on the network. It's not a quiet location during the day, but that's not to be expected so close to a city centre. It is, however, surprisingly quiet at night. The temporary access route needs care if you are not familiar with the area. Other than that, a brilliant (if expensive) site, Book early to avoid disappointment

Stand by your beds !

Good location for York and visiting the Railway Museum,Streamline Taxis offer a good service from the site. Facilities not as clean as other Club sites we have stayed on this year but i guess that is because it is so busy,we stayed on pitch no6 and tried to be considerate of pitch no5 but heaven help you if your not parked in line ! even though the pitch is not marked out. What i learnt most from this site is to look at other review sites before booking to see others received the same treatment as us,it's success is down to it's location not customer service so i would stay at Beechwood Grange and use Streamline Taxis !

Nice clean quiet site close to York

First time visit Although pitches are close together, they are set apart by bushes and are very private. Very well kept, clean and tidy toilets and showers. Close to York approx 15-20mins walking Very popular so nearly always fully booked Booked again for next year already

Great location for York

The temporary approach to the site is easy to follow provided you follow the instructions given very carefully. The wardens were welcoming and keen to help and the facilities were spotless. We stayed on pitch 15 which to be honest was a bit tight for our standard length caravan but the choice was pretty limited as the site was extremely busy. This particular pitch and the ones adjacent to it are the other side of a hedge from a playground. This of course meant that it was very, very noisy from early in the morning til early evening. It was quiet at night. We would avoid this side of the site in the future. There is a gate which is used to walk into town at the side of the site for which you are given a key. This road leads to a lovely parade of shops and restaurants including a butcher, greengrocer and a Sainsbury’s local. You have to be home by 10pm if you want to use this gate as it is then locked and you have to walk all the way round to enter through the main gates to get access after 10pm. A minor inconvenience in our view. This is a city site so expect it to be busy but it is ideally placed to visit the beautiful city of York.

Great site, great location, lovely stay

A great location for walking into York, staff could not have been more welcoming, we had a great pitch. Toilets, water and disposal points clean and well maintained and staff were working hard all day despite temperature in the 30s! Lovely pub grub and restaurants 2 mins from the back gate and York restaurants are all very dog friendly. Rowntree park is next door and really pretty. Had booked well in advance as the site is very popular. First time back since a visit many years ago and it is even better now. Very quiet at night, even with all windows and skylights open due to the heatwave.
