I was a bit put off by the reviews, but didn't need to worry. The access via Butchers Terrace was fine (although my sat nav sent me via the racecourse, which was rather narrow - much better to go via the bridge roundabout.
I'm female and in my 60s and walked back alone from town after 10.00. Yes, the walk is longer (along Rowntree park by the main road, down the side, and back along the river, but it is an easy well lit walk and only added 12-15 mins to the walk. I was there Sat and Sun night, so was worried about noise on Monday morning. No builders on site early (I left to walk the dog at 8.15am). There was drilling before 8.00am, but it was the other side of the river. Builders were accessing their depot on the site mid morning, but were driving their tipper truck very slowly.
Yes, there's some disruption but it's still fantastic
Reading a few other reviews people might be put off booking here. On the basis that anyone booking ahead will (mostly) have to do it 12 months ahead, work will have finished on the flood defences. I'm sure if the police were alerted to the anti-social behaviour at Millennium Bridge they'd perhaps take some action. York is always a bit lairy at weekends, the city centre especially. And don't get me started about the drunken behaviour seen on race days in and around the racecourse. I'm sure the wardens will be incorporating the "don't use Millenium Bridge in the late evening" advice to others. Anyway, we had a brilliant time - was impressed at the organisation, efficiency and friendliness of the warden team.
Millennium Bridge - avoid!
We stayed last week for 4 nights, including a Saturday when we attended a concert at the Barbican theatre. This finished at 10.15 so we knew the back gate was locked (still confused as to why a locked gate needs to be padlocked anyway.....??).
We walked back to the site using the suggested route (Millennium Bridge) only to find approximately 150 teenagers/youths having a large gathering/party stretching across both ends of the bridge. We had to endure numerous offensive comments and aggressive behaviour as we walked past them - one of the most intimidating experiences we have ever had.
My advice to members is to avoid the area after dark and invest in a taxi - it's worth the money, believe me, and had I known what was about to happen, I would done that.
I have emailed my concerns regarding Member's safety around the bridge area to the CMHC but as yet no reply.
We love the site and have stayed many times, but will not be returning until the flood work is completed....or alternatively, the CMHC comes to their senses and stops padlocking the safe route back to the site i.e. the back gate.

Already badly effected by flood works
As regular visitors to this site we were interested to see how the newly started flood works will effect the site. The club had kept us informed about start dates, expected noise, use of the back gate and the changes to the route onto site which worked well.
We had not been told that the site would now have multiple workmen walking around the site, their vehicles including diggers, trucks, dumpers and tree removal equipment speeding around the one-way system at anytime from 8am. Nor that guests at the neighbouring hotel had been given back gate keys so they too were on site. We used to have a degree of club privacy - that’s gone.
The trees are now gone at the back of the site (cut down over two days) so earthmoving equipment can increase the height of the flood bank. - to be done within a few metres of members units.
Arrivals advertised as 1pm were (when we were present) let on to site from 12:30. Evidently this is to ensure the temporary access route onto site for units doesn’t block preventing contractors access to their work site.
Had we had the full story , we would have cancelled - and this was just the first two days. Good luck!

Rear Gate Access
The site is well presented and kept spotless with great shower facilities & we enjoyed our stay but.......
My only gripe is the fact the back gates are padlocked at 22:00.
At the moment & for the foreseable future the road including footpath at the front of the site into York City is closed for flood defence work meaning the only access to the city is via the back gates, This meant we had to cut our nights out short to return before the gate was locked making it feel like a curfew. The reason I was told is because members keep leaving it open, c'mon CAMC do something about this, other places hotels alike would have an automatic gate with electronic key fob. The gate itself is poorly designed, poorly lit and could easily be improved to benefit guests access.
why are the washing facilites closed from 10 - 12, this is supposed to be a holiday site but unless you wake at 7 you will find all facilities closed
As a regular visitor to this excellent site, i need to know as to why pot washing and toilets are all locked from 10 - 12, would it not be more benefical to your customers to close the facilites from 12 - 2 when every one has left to visit york etc.
After speaking with other club members this does appear to be an issue for many who feel that this is not done in the interests of members, the site is a low maintenance site which should be able to accomodate a time change?
I wait with interest your response
4 days in York
After having to make 3 separate booking to ensure we could get 4 days in York we got to the site via diversions and were quickly booked in and got a very nice pitch in the sun
Site is fabulous for its location in the city centre and most of the must do visitor attractions are all walkable
We did a river cruise/Railway Museum and a visit to Yorkshire regimental museum
Castle tour did not happen as we had not booked on line and large numbers of people waiting put us off
Lots of nice bars/restaurants close to the campsite and all types of takeaway can be delivered
When we left we discovered the barrier fob was still in the van (apologies) and had to be posted to club site
Lots of geese flying over the site and they look fabulous but make a lot of noise if you are a light sleeper

Well kept site
This is a well kept site despite it being extremely busy due to its great location. Toilet and showers are kept immaculate and staff are very friendly and accommodating.

York.. great location despite slip road shut down.... Dont arrive until 1pm
We had two very nice nights here in great weather . The Wardens do a fantastic job managing arrivals and departures in a well planned system . This is a very busy site in terms of movements and most campers only do one or two days. Only negative is that one inconsiderate member decided to pack up at 07.30 on a Sunday . Crashing and banging about it woke lots from sleep even hammering pegs out etc . Please consider others if you want to get up early BE QUIET people are on holiday . Consider others . Not much the wardens can do to control this and they really manage this difficult site well . Real Bonus is an electric battery powered service tractor ... almost silent !!
The River Works makes access one way only, through Rowntree Park but its quite easy to get through . Nice walk.. Go back along the river side walk ( same way you came in ) and then cross over the pedestrian bridge and double back other side along River Walk no traffic . Then cross foss bridge right into the city you will find all the boat trips and a few bars here .
On site .The locked gate goes through to local shopping area in 100 yards. is very handy and saves a long a long walk through the diversion . We found the Slip Inn a decent bar with friendly locals . Nice fish and chips and local Sainsburys all makes a very convenient place to stay for a few days . Best pitches for the sun are in the 80s on blue pegs. TV reception with booster at hook up if you need it Toilets very clean as per normal . Very good helpful wardens.
If you book make sure you turn up !!!
Good location
Stayed here at the beginning of September although superb location and clean toilet block, could not justify why the toilets had to close from 10am to 12. for cleaning with no where else to go. This is going to be the busiest time to use the toilet block after breakfast and people leaving with no alternative.
Also the 10pm locked gate was a issue as reviewed by others. That said would still like to stay here again, hopefully with changes.
