Autumnal stay

This has been our third October stay at Troutbeck and we always enjoy it. Facilities are spacious and spotless, wardens very welcoming and helpful. This is Cumbria so expect rain and come prepared. Depending on your pitch, there are some glorious views to be had. There is some noise from the activity centre next door, the worst being the go-karts- this hasn't troubled us too much, perhaps because we are always there off season and out of school holidays. Keswick nearby has plenty on offer, places to eat [ dog friendly ] - can thoroughly recommend the Square Orange for pizza and tapas, plus Booths supermarket is excellent. We are walkers and the choice is endless. My only slight niggle is the introduction of the pods, open to non-members. I hope this isn't going to be a growing phenomenon as I think it detracts from the charm of a site - but this is just my personal opinion.

Our first stay in two years but still great.

We haven't stayed here with a caravan since before lockdown but it's always been one of our most visited sites. We received one of the friendliest welcomes by Stuart and soon pitched on the service pitches which were very busy. The site continues to be well maintained and the relatively recent refurbished facilities still looked new. A special thank you another warden Rebecca for being very helpful with one point (All the other wardens were equally cheerful but sorry I didn't get all your names). There are a few different things from last time, the information room has details about cycling routes from the site, there is now a walking route from the site through Matterdale forest to Dockray, and the games rooms has been closed off from the information room so that information is available at all times. From speaking to neighbours the Troutbeck Head Inn (at the turn off from the A66) does excellent meals while we can personally vouch for the Mill at Musgrisedale. There is fish and chips on a Monday night too.

late arrival/first class welcome

We arrived approx 19:45 after being held up in a road traffic accident on M8 and roadworks on A74 The wardens could not have been more helpful and once they knew our travelling companions were first time motor homers they took even more time with them Once we got settled in/hooked up the wardens again took the time to come round to ensure Bobby and Maureen had got water/electricity and where happy with the pitch Toilet/shower block is first class and was kept immaculate during our stay We toured Ullswater/Windemere/Thirlmere/Keswick and Penrith during our 3 day stop On departure the 4 wardens again took the time to ask how Bobby and Maureen had got on Probably the cheeriest and most helpful 4 wardens on any site we have visited

An Excellent Stay

This was our first stay at this site, having stayed at other CC sites in the region. We both found the wardens to be friendly and very approachable if we had needed to. We were both very impressed with the cleanliness of the site, it all seemed to be excellent. Have stayed on very many CC sites and found this one to be one of the best, well done wardens.

Good and bad

As expected with club sites very well run and managed. Of special note the toilet blocks were immaculately maintained. The negative, and this is as compared to other CAMC sites is that you really need your car to get anywhere. There is only one walk and that is the path to Dockray and then onward to Aira Force. There are no other decent routes to leave your car behind. The second, and again its only cruelly because its Lake District standards its not the prettiest of sites in a ex quarry/ new forestry planation. Finally the pub at Dockray has no staff so avoid if you want choice and service when dining out. The nearby farm shop a mile or two down the A66 is tragic. You are greeted by a aggressive guard dog as you enter, they too have no chef and the choice of locally sourced farm food ,bearing in mind your in cumbria is dire. That said I would return here as such a well managed site and decent overall location , very peaceful once the next door activity centre has closed for the day.

Rude wardens

We had a confrontational, rude and disrespectful arrival to this site due to the wardens. Due to terrible traffic during our 6 h journey, we arrived at the site just after midnight. We were feeling quite stressed as it was late and our family were waiting to let us into the park with their key (we were a self-contained small camper van sharing a pitch with a caravan- this had been organised before). Due to the lack of visible signposting, we drove the wrong way (at the 5 mph speed limit) and so had to turn around to get back to our pitch. At this point we didn’t know about the confusing, ridiculous one way system around the park. After finding the pitch and getting straight to sleep (without even setting anything up, as to stay quiet), two wardens with flash lights came over and stared shouting at us “what do you think you are doing”, one of whom had their head poked into the van window, with no face mask, in the middle of a pandemic! Ironically, they were shouting at us for accidentally driving the wrong way around the one way system, complaining that due to a complaint from someone on the other side of the site (that we had driven past) they’ve had to get out of bed! The wardens proceeded to accuse us of breaking and entering, it was really horrible to experience. These wardens approached the situation in a hostile manner, when it could have been solved amicably with a simple (low volume) conversation. Needless to say, we spent the rest of the time on edge and uncomfortable, as we received no apology for the awful greeting we experienced. In addition, the games room is over priced (it’s £1 per game or pool/hand football. The only good thing about this park is the (reasonably) clean shower block. Obviously, I won’t be returning and I hope that no other guests experience the hostility that we did due to a simple mistake.

A gem of a site

Lovely quiet site with some stunning views. Modern and clean facilities. No TV reception but booster system which was new to us and after purchasing a coax from the office all was good (maybe CAMC should advertise this more clearly?). However now sorted for other similar sites. We pitched at peg 82 and later found it backed onto the site sewerage works and got a few whiffs of that but not significant enough to move or complain (we were out and about exploring the area most of the time). Mayde something the site staff could point out though? We will be back.

Excellent

We had a wonderful time here, cycling from site using the National cycle routes. Occasionally quite steep so cheating with an electric bike is useful. Excellent breakfast stop in Pooley Bridge. We found the site really peaceful. Yes, there was some clay pigeon shooting, but not for long periods. We found members barking dogs much more irritating- if your dog persists in barking at other people why can’t you put it in your unit? Everything was spotless and clearly the club is trying to do their best to keep us safe in these trying times. Really unfortunate therefore that members can’t abide by the request to wear masks in the facilities. I wear mine to protect you so it seems that you are being really discourteous to me when you don’t do the same. Thank you to the wardens for making us feel so welcome

Stunning

Stayed for only 2 nights en route from Scotland to Southport. Very impressed both with location and the site it's been updated (I have been led to believe) and all the facilities are 1st class. No complaints on any score and will certainly stay again probably for longer. Only visited Penrith, which is a lovely town had a great meal in the pub located on the market place. Hopefully next time we will go further afield.

Short breaks in Troutbeck

We stayed as a family of 4 adults in our campervan on 2 separate occasions in August. Once at the beginning and once in the middle. 2 nights each time. It’s a lovely spacious well set out site with fantastic views towards Blencathera and Skiddaw. The first time we stayed next to the toilet block which was a large hard standing and we had an extra car as well as awning and van and it all fitted well. And the second time we did the same but in a different area in front of a tree. The reception lady was very friendly and welcoming both times for check in. The toilet block was a bit further for us the second time but still only a few minutes. All very clean and this time fully open so no waiting for showers or toilets. I noticed that people are now not wearing masks at all ..but it’s up to personal preference. The site is not within walking distance of a pub so you do need to drive. The fish and chip van visits once a week on the site. Penrith is about 10 miles drive but had a good choice of bars and restaurants. If you like craft beer I would recommend the Fell brewery bar which had just opened and had lots of seating space upstairs as well. We have a dog and did not find one restaurant which did not take dogs. Keswick is good to visit but it was very busy and the same for pooley bridge. There are no fells you can walk straight out of the site, and the forestry commission are doing a good job in fencing everywhere off now so it limits some close dog walking. Wainwright’s smallest peak can be seen opposite the site but you still have to drive to it to walk up. Also Latrigg fell near Keswick has good views over towards Derwentwater and also Bassenthwaite in the distance. Car park is small. I would definitely recommend this site and we will return again in the autumn for the lovely colours. Also you get the best sunsets in the borrowdale area in the autumn months!
