Exceptional site.....

Stayed on this site during mid July. Site was full, but still remained quiet ... schools not fully broken up for the holidays. Facilities spotless, and the 3 sets of wardens ensured they remained so throughout our stay. Site flower displays were well tended. Facilities were spotless, but appear a little dated and tired....... painted rather than tiled floors. On several occasions the hand dryer or hair dryer was inoperative, but always an alternative available, and the faulty equipment would be working next day. Stunning views from some of the pitches, with plenty of great scenery nearby. Rookin House next door is an activity centre with Quad Biking and horse riding among the pursuits offered. Although close, you cannot hear the bikes from the site. We enjoyed our stay, but would ask members who have a hearing problem to remember that not everyone wants to hear their TV's or radio from 20 yards away!! 3 cheers for the wardens who had to contend with running the site and supervising a building site after Storm Desmond washed away 16 pitches and a playground !! Plug: Brackenrigg Inn on the way to Pooley Bridge is recommended as a watering hole -- great food, great value and the beer is from their own micro-brewery.

People before Grass

The wardens are obsessed about their precious grass. They have introduced yellow posts all over the site verges which makes it so difficult when you have an 8,7 metre motorhome wih car on the back. Read other reviews and see how many people mention the grass and the said posts.God help you if you suggest you need a site near the toilet block and may overhang ,not touch, the precious grass.Longer units beware, you are not made to feel welcome on this site because of grass and grass cutting. s

What a lot of dogs....

I know that the very mention of dogs can provoke many different reactions but I have to say that on our recent stay there were far too many - dogs, that is, not reactions. We were surprised by the almost constant barking and yapping that was going on from early morning into the evening - almost every pitch had at least one dog and many had two or three. We do not have dogs any more but have always been pleasantly surprised whilst caravanning for the last 11 years that most dogs have been well behaved and quiet -perhaps there should be a limit set for the number of dogs on a site at any one time.

An excellent site for central & northern lake district

A great location well laid out with friendly wardens. Excellent visiting hot food van on Tuesdays & Fridays with fish & chips and or cumberland sausage. Toilet blocks very clean but in need of updating floor of showers top floor surfaces badly worn with water running in your of showers across circulation space. Wardens do well to keep them usable.

A quiet getaway

We stayed for 2 nights on 8th June on way to Scotland, a pleasant and quiet site with lovely walks and views, very clean and polite and friendly wardens. A fish n chip van was a welcome by most campers and very nice they were. We had rain while there and will go back hopefully when it doesn't rain.

Nice site but a few drawbacks

Troutbeck is a well laid out site in a great location for the more Touristy parts of the Lake District. It however has no Wi-Fi which isn't helpful at all. It is not as if the phone and mobile data signals are strong enough to fall back on. Readers will be thinking "You are in the Lake District stop whinging and go and get a walk" but when you have a 6 month old who needs something from a chemist it would be helpful to be able to find one easily. Keeping on the subject of little people, the Toddler Facilities here are really quite poor. Yes they have a bath, a changing table, a mini toilet and a sink but they are all crammed into something which would be better suited as a cleaners cupboard. It was the same in both blocks! The changing table folding over the bath has more use as a diving board for the more adventurous toddler than as something to undress and dress the child on. It is quite simply in a ridiculous position! You struggle to get the changed baby into the bath and then have to hold a soapy wringing wet baby with one hand whilst folding the table back down at the end of it's wash. My Son (now 7 months) has been on 5 caravan club sites already and this is the first one I have had issues on! The Toddler rooms need some thought and redesign. Also, one of the Wardens was so grumpy also he made Victor Meldrew look like Michael Mcintyre. Maybe having a bad day but I remember him from previous occasions!

Lovely setting

First time to this site and it won't be our last. Just back from and 8 night stay where we had good weather at the start which always helps, but the changing weather conditions only add to the dramatic scenery around the site. The site layout gives the feeling of different areas, so you don't feel the site is as large as it is. We set the caravan nose in as we then had a view across the stream, to the hills beyond. As you would expect from a club site, the toilet facilities are spotless and there never seemed to be a queue for the showers. If you have children, there are two play areas (only one in use when we were on site) and a games room, giving them something to do on site. Dog walk from the site up into the forest gave our Collie the freedom to run and stretched our legs. There is a shorter walk on site, towards the entrance but dogs have to be on leads here - good for an evening stroll or smaller dogs. Lovely and peaceful site, although the nearby Outdoor Centre can be noisy at times - quads, clay pigeon shooting etc, but its not all day although holiday periods might be busier. Fish & Chip van visits twice a week. Keswick and Penrith are a short drive away. Penrith having Morrisons and Sainsburys for a choice of supermarket and should not be missed for its smaller shops. Keswick has lots of little interesting shops. Loads to see and do in the area - too many to mention.

A favourite site

We have visited this site many times and it never fails to please. The site is beautifully kept and the scenery is magnificent. The peace and tranquillity is blissful! The facilities are what all CAMC sites should aspire to-the shower cubicles are spacious, (great for those more generously proportioned among us!), and the shower head is at a 90 degree angle to the shower curtain. This means no wet curtain sticking to one's nether regions and also ensures that the rest of the cubicle doesn't get flooded. Why aren't all shower cubicles fitted out like this? The site is handy for Keswick, a lovely town with loads of dog friendly pubs, and Penrith, an old fashioned town with some lovely independent shops. There is so much stunning scenery in this area that is easy to reach, and the Lakes are beautiful too. It also has one of our favourite pubs, The Brackenrigg, overlooking Ullswater, a lovely spot to while an hour or two away. We will return.

Perfect site

Have stayed here many times and have never failed to enjoy our stay. Such friendly wardens make it extra special and the facilities are always clean and adequate. Site ideally positioned for northern lakes and also for a short stop enroute further north. Pitches are generous throughout. Would have to agree with a few of the other reviews that the site could soon benefit from an upgrade as the facilities are beginning to look a little tired.

In need of an upgrade

Just returned from a weeks stay here, yes a very friendly welcome from everyone. Just after we put up our awning there was the biggest thunder storm we have every seen in this country, during which there was about 2 inches of water all over our pitch, because of all the water we moved our small tent onto the grass out of the water, the water drained quickly but when the wardens saw our tent was on the grass they asked us to move back onto the pitch, as they are so concerned about their grass they should sort out their drainage to avoid any flooding in the first place. I hope the club plan to update the toilet blocks eventhough they were kept as clean as they could be there are signs of them being patched up and not very well done, also every evening when I went for a shower there was a strong smell of stale urine. All this was a shame as the location and views are excellent.
