First visit

This was our first visit to Troutbeck and, like others, were a little curious as to what we would find regarding the toilet and shower block. Having come directly from the Hawes site where the facilities are fantastic (recently renovated to a high standard with plenty of bacon/toilet/shower cubicles) I was pleasantly surprised as they were no where near as dire I was thinking they would be from the review I had read. Yes, they are dated but they are well maintained and cleaned and did us well. We were warned on arrival, that, as they had had a very wet summer, if in the event of a heavy downpour water was likely to come up through the hardstanding as the ground was saturated. Worth thinking about if you have anyone sleeping in an awning which fortunately we didn't. The site is well positioned to the M6 but remember you are miles from a supermarket. Not sure I would visit again in the school holidays as I had underestimated how busy the tourist hot spots would be but will be back we ourselves are no longer tied to school holidays. Two small gripes - I completely understand the need for dogs to be under control but to be told off for not having your dog on a lead from the steps of your caravan to the boot of your car seems a bit harsh and secondly, please can other users leave their domestics at home/in the car rather than airing them in public. It's embarassing for you and it's embarrassing for the rest of us who start to dread the next outburst.

Don't be put off by negative reviews-it's lovely!

After reading some of the negative reviews recently made and because we have spent two lovely weekends there in spring and early summer, I felt it was important to write a review of this lovely site. The toilet blocks are well maintained and clean at all times and I didn't feel at all that they were as much of an issue as previous reviewers. The site itself is in a stunning location with beautiful views in many directions, whilst the wardens work very hard to make sure that facilities are maintained. In addition, I feel it is exceptionally well placed to visit places. It's easy to reach from the M6 in 10-15 minutes, whilst you have Keswick, with Derwentwater, Skiddaw and a whole host of walking trails to your West. Travel South and you can easily reach the beauty of Ullswater and Hellvellyn. Eastwards is Penrith and Ullswater steamers from Pooley Bridge. All of these places are within 30 minutes drive and often less, meaning there is plenty to visit nearby. It is one of our favourite sites due to its ideal location in the north Lakes and we shall be returning very soon!

Returning

After a fantastic stay middle of May with the weather better than abroad, yes 22 degree's for 6 days, we have decided to return middle of September but may l add with all the wet gear just incase. We enjoyed the site but agree the toilet block needs updating but still lovely and clean, l do believe its down to be done early 2018. We found loads of places to go around the lake at in Keswick, we hope to take a boat on ullswater this time, can't wait to wake up to the view of Blencathra, theirs a cracking Farm shop just up the road with everything you need. You will need to book for a meal always full at lunch time. The wardens all of them were brilliant, always time for a chat would always help with information. We had a service pitch last time but will go for a standard pitch to get the best view of Blencathra, hoping the autumn leaves will be turning could be a little early but glad to be coming back to wonderful site even though its one of the dearest on the network

Peaceful and good location

Well laid out site with plenty of choice of pitches. Nice location to visit the local area, in particular Ullswater and surrounding villages. We went to Penrith which is a nice town, although like someone has already said, it's 11 miles to the nearest civilisation - and to get fuel! We spent 3 nights here but with poor weather, we pretty much exhausted the activities on offer, so we probably wouldn't return unless for a stopover on the way to somewhere else. Someone has also mentioned the toilet block, which is somewhat old-fashioned - but works well nevertheless - and despite the small number of showers, I never had to wait for one. However it is in need of updating!

GREAT STAY

Great stay as usual. Wardens very friendly - wish the two new ones this time were staying next year! Always had time for a quick chat and made you feel welcome. Great views. Good for wildlife including deer on off site walk. Had fun dodging the toads and frogs on a night when raining! Big increase in dogs this year (please pick up your poo! You know who you are.) The wardens spend a long time keeping the site clean so this is the least you can do. One nitpick - would be good not to have 97 reserved for larger units anymore as we have never seen anyone use it whilst we have stayed on site. The size of your unit is on the booking so I would have thought the site knew when a larger unit would be booked in. Still find this site expensive for some reason compared to others, but will visit again and again.

Return visit

This was our second visit and we were surprised to find the facilities in the same state as last year as we told by the wardens that an upgrade would be taking place during early 2017 and the site would be closed. We agree that the wardens are stretched, as they seem to spend all day cutting grass, ie strimming around our pitch at 3.00pm and then following it up with the blower, this was insensitive when cars were at the caravans. On the whole it is a very nice site but expensive for what it is. In this day and age though I think it is about time the Caravan Club became more flexible with arrivals, as to miss the traffic we set off very early (3.00am) and arrived on site at 9.00am, we asked if we could possibly unhitch and leave the caravan but we were told that we should have waited in the laybyes on the A66 until 12.00pm, it does not say this in the booklet, so don't arrive early!

Lovely site

Arrived on site at about 4pm on a Friday evening. Processed quickly and stayed on pitch number 31 right at the far end of the site next to the stream. It was so peaceful and lovely. We went with another family and had 3 children between us who loved it. The play park could do with a bit more on it but there is so much to do nearby that it didn't matter. The showers and toilets were clean. Everyone who worked there was very friendly. We stayed just for the 2 nights, but could easily have stayed longer. Would definitely like to return again soon.

Well overdue for some investment

First of all the positives - and there are some. Well run club site; friendly helpful and efficient wardens; some delightful views and bird life. But oh how the facilities blocks need upgrading - and desperately. They're clean and adequate - barely. They MUST be inefficient in climatic / environmentally friendly terms and such a poor usage of available space. The buildings are good but they simply need gutting and much better use of those energy sapping vestibules incorporated into more, in number and efficiency, up to date facilities. How this call for investment into (in my personal experience) the most expensive site I have ever visited, has been overlooked is hard to imagine. And why so expensive? Some nice views but not a lot; noise from the activity centre adjacent rents the peace and quiet at times; miles from anywhere so a minimum 11 mile drive to almost anywhere and not a great deal for children activities - so not too family friendly. Upgrade to all facilities wouldn't cost the earth - dare I say less than a rebranding of Club livery and logo - and is well overdue. And a reduction in fees may attract more visitors too. And who pays for maintenance of the dog exercise area? Do I? As a non dog owner? Huge numbers of dogs - generally should the Club be introducing a nightly fee for each dog so that the owners pay for these costs? None of the foregoing reflects on the (current) wardens who are of a high standard and calibre - but they must hate those toilet blocks. They really are 1950's (the facilities not the wardens) - in a year when Doctor Who becomes a woman! Not good enough.

Excellent Site.

We love this site and usually stay en route to/from the south English coast. When visiting the toilet block it's like time travelling back to the 1950's.The facilities are clean enough (must be hard to keep clean) but require a serious upgrade to modern facilities. Considering the nightly charges equal or exceed commercial sites (with more facilities) it's time to modernise.
