stayed here for 1 night returning from Scotland, it was my first visit since the refurb, the site is as good as ever. Some of the pitches had been taken out of action due to the weather forecast and the chance of them waterlogging but still plenty of choice of pitch available. spotlessly tidy site in a good location only a short drive from Penrith, Keswick and Ullswater with good walking from the site.
OK but expensive
We visited in early August. The site's new sanitary blocks are very smart as they have been refurbished. It has expanded with more pitches since we last visited several years ago. It's standard caravan club. Large pebbled pitches , not much privacy to the pitches. TV hook up is useful. Bring your long coax aerial cable. This site is expensive though for what you get. It sits in isolation on a marshy moor. 15 to 20 mins drive from any area or town of interest. There is very poor phone signal for the 3 network and no WiFi. For some this might be attractive but for us was a nuisance as we needed to keep contact with home as a relative was ill. We had a lot of rain which alarmingly began to swamp our pitch and awning along with many others. The wardens must know this happens on certain pitches and were not warned of this
tendency on arrival even though heavy rain was expected . Unfortunately we were also unwittingly pitched close to the site's septic tanks. These were emptied at lunchtime one day on our stay . The stench was unbelievable and we were trapped in the van for 30 minutes on a hot day unable to eat our food as the stench infiltrated the van and made us retch. For the price I don't think it is worth it, and it is no wonder it is rarely full in high season.
Excellent site in The Lakes
We stayed on a serviced pitch at this excellent site and thoroughly recommend it for its location, friendliness, cleanliness and generous pitch size. The wardens were friendly and helpful and kept the whole place in a great condition.
Beware the Midges
Well kept site. Having serviced pitches has made a difference to this site. Facilities excellent but overall quite a pricey site. We stayed 3 nights at the end of our 3 week holiday on route home, but midges at night tend to keep you in your van.
Lovely site - BUT come prepared to battle the Wee Black Beasties(!)
Very well maintained, tidy & peaceful site. Lovely views of Blencathra (Saddleback). Of particular note are the excellent, newly-refitted (2018 Season) modern showers and toilet blocks - HOWEVER it does have a significant issue with mosquitos, horseflies and (especially) tiny black biting midges (the type that are tiny enough, it seems, to pass through flyscreens...arrrgh). The answer, as we found, after being badly bitten for the first few nights - was to acquire a 'Jungle Formula' brand plug-in electric vaporizer (£8 on Amazon - the type that has a 2-pin Euro style fitment, so also grab a UK plug adaptor for another £2 odd) - and to leave it gently fuming away in the van (completely odourless) - the liquid reservoir claims to last for 45 days. (Happily) the first morning, after deployment - there were around 50 of the wee beasties in various stages of rigor mortis on the windowsill. Also be aware that the on-site grocery shop is (for some reason) cash only. Equidistant for both Keswick and Penrith - at an easy 15 mins drive to each, the latter with several large Supermarkets (Sainsburys, Morrisons, Aldi, etc.) ** Bonus Marks to the kindly Warden Team for their forbearance with my frequent recourse to Amazon Deliveries (mostly for insect killing remedies - see above!) **
price
This was our second visit to Troutbeck Lovely site, friendly wardens.A bit noisy as grass cutting on both our days on our last trip, understand work has to be done but maybe should be kept between 9am till 12. not all day project. Many of our other carravanners mentioned the cost, quite pricey no midweek offers, maybe this could be the reason site half full. will still return as cleanliness is perfect.
First Visit
This was our first visit to this site, visited other cub sites in the Lakes many times. Lovely tidy site facilities spotless all credit to the very friendly wardens. Depending where you pitch good views of Blencathra, also depending where you pitch may find the noise from the activity centre next door a bit annoying, quad bikes, and shooting, didn't bother us and we were outside most of the time as we were blessed with nice weather, but maybe something to be aware of if you have a nervous dog etc, as I know some who visited have found this a problem. Picthes seem to vary a bit in size, we had plenty of grass as many other pitches do too. Dog walk from the site passed all the service pitches, which really haven't a view. The site is quite away out so MH owners, unless they maybe enjoy long walks or cycling might find this inconvenient. We ate out twice, The Royal at Dockray just ok and The Old Mill at Mungrisedale which was excellent. Will return to this site in the future I am sure.
Club site
Just returned from 5 night stay . We have stayed here several times over the years due to its location & you know what to expect. This is first time since refurbishment & as others have mentioned the toilet block (2 of them) are excellent & spotlessly maintained. A shelf near hairdryer would be useful as there is no where to put towel & toiletries except on the floor, a minor niggle but easily rectified - hopefully.
The pitches are large & well spaced but im generally getting a little disalusioned wth club sites as they are more resembling car parks & views are predominately of other caravans etc. There are lovely views beyond the caravans dependant upon where you are sited. Im begining to look elsewhere as we have been impressed with other non club sites where pitching is more open & not looking directly into other caravans. Having said that im sure we will return . Wardens friendly .fish & chip van very good on tues & fridays. Nearby Pooley Bridge is delightful & the park & ride a great idea. The walk along Aira Force is lovely.. we dont have children with us but games room on site & activity center next door will be a plus for those who do.
A credit to the Club, its wardens & its members
It may have been refurbished a year ago but it looks like it was only yesterday.
We stayed there for 4 nights in June after visiting Dockray Meadow & Coniston Park Coppice before heading back to Dorset.
The site was a credit to the Club, its wardens and the members who used it. Everything was spotless and well supplied. The wardens were very welcoming and helpful.
If we return to the Lake District we will certainly use this site again.
10 day break
After a warm welcome to the site we proceeded to our booked service pitch.
Site well kept and maintained with facilities as you would expect on cc sites.
We were both badly bitten by the large amount of midges on site, choose your pitch carefully!!!.
Anyone wishing to put up an annexe to their awning for use by families should take note that you wont be allowed to pitch anything on the grass!!
