The Firs Lovely site and wardens

We have just spent a long weekend at The Firs the wardens are lovely and the site so clean, great for couples who want to get away from it all, nothing for kids really. The Toilet block is super clean, loads of showers, toilets and space. No walks and biking is not really available unless you are a experienced biker. Had to use the car to go places, Belper is lovely and Strutts Cotton Mill is good value at £4 pp, for a guided and informative tour. Went to Ecclesbourne Railway for an evening meal on the steam train, well worth it and worth a visit just to see their railway station, trains etc., run by volunteers, go and have a look to see their great work and what they have achieved. Enjoy!

Superb Site

This is s superb site, near to Belper, the wardens have made the site very attractive with hanging baskets. The site is handy for lots of activities. Visited Royal Crown Derby, Attenborough Nature Reserve, Heage Windmill. Heage Windmill is worth visiting even if you have mobility problems as there is an excellent virtual tour and very helpful volunteers. Unfortunately we didn't visit Strutts Mill as the car park is limited for camper vans and the weather was poor, as we have mobility problems we didn't want to get cold & wet but we will visit again. The site can be used as a base for visiting many peak District towns and villages and there are plenty of places to eat out. Morrisons is near by to replenish stocks. The local Fishermens Rest does not do food but they are happy (apparently) to give out take away menus and you can eat in the pub while drinking their beverages. We didn't avail ourselves of this service.

Small but friendly site

We have visited this site on numerous occasions, we don't have any family so this site suits us perfectly to chill out and enjoy our time there. The warden gave us a map for a lovely walk round near by Ambergate reservoir and woods, equally Carsington on the water is only 9 miles away for a beautiful walk. The toilet block is always spotless and we had a courtesy call from the warden prior to our arrival to apologise for any inconvenience for the renovation works they had been doing - there was no issue at all as this didn't inconvenience us at all. We arrived late due to a multi car pile up on the M1 and I rang ahead to let the wardens know our ETA they were very accommodating and waited for us even though it was after hours. We will definitely visit again and again - one of our favourite sites!

Small site but a Gem

This was our first stay at this site and we were very impressed with the entire experience. The welcome was very friendly and thorough and the wardens couldn't have been more helpful in helping us select a pitch that suited our "T5 & Vango" combo. The site has an older set of pitches at the same level as the entry - but these seem to be quite close together & you get the sense of being on top of one another. The lower level pitches are quite the reverse with wide spacing and a good layout. The washing facilities are modern and kept very clean and the site is very well kept. The site is a little out in the country and (I think) there are two pubs in walking distance that we passed when driving. The site dog walk is quite small and if you have an energetic dog you'll probably need to go elsewhere. I think this site is one of my favourites.

Small, compact but lovely site

Our first visit this year since the Club have completed a number of improvements during the closed season, many of the previously grass pitches are now hard standing and realigned though quite a few are still comparatively small for CC pitches. The new wardens are brilliant, very friendly, constantly working hard and always aiming to please! The only down side is that there is nothing for children but the art of making your own fun should be revived!! If you fancy tapas or remarkably cheap rib-eyes at 2 for £13 (before 7pm) try the Black Swan lounge Bar - fantastic value. The Firs is perfect for every Peak District attraction - a great site with immaculate facilities.

Nice but no walking off site

Quiet site with nice and friendly wardens. Toilets and showers very clean and up to usual CC standards. Some pitches had nice views and the view from the corner of the site where the two parts join was lovely. We booked a service pitch thinking they would be easier but they weren’t and if we were returning we would book a standard awning pitch as some of these were much nicer and bigger than the service pitch we ended up on. Many pitches are tight to get on to – our 8m caravan was inches from the road despite being almost touching the fence at the back. This meant we couldn’t use the drain for the grey water to empty the waste master as it was under the caravan– if we had had a pipe it would have been ok. The way the site is accessed means you drive past the entrance and straight down the main street of Belper, before u-turning on the island to come back up the main street and a mile or so more to turn right into the lane. This was quite slow and fiddly but is necessitated by the angle of the junction. The pub in Nether Heage – The Spanker – did pub meals. OK but nothing special. The Hanging Gate on the A517 going from Belper towards Ashbourne was lovely though. Very few children on site – even at the weekend – this was probably because there would be practically nothing for them to do on this site. The main clientele seemed to be older couples. Small but adequate dog walk area – grassed so they could run off the lead . No dog walking off the site though – had to go in the car to get to any walking with no footpaths or bridleways accessible and the site entrance being directly onto a road with some very steep hills. A nice site, but we probably wouldn’t return to this site due to the lack of walking/cycling available directly off the site - other sites in Derbyshire would be better for our needs.

A lovely stay

We stayed here for two weeks while we were having building work done and it was lovely and quiet. We were on a service pitch for the first time and loved it. The showers were very clean. We didn't use the laundrette because we used ours at home. The toddler room was great for our 4 year old and she loved it.

A Jewell in the Crown

Recently enjoyed a 4 day stay at The Firs and our second visit to this site. As always the facilities were immaculate and a credit to the hard work of the wardens, whom I guess a lot of us rank and file members tend to take a little bit for granted. Since our first visit a couple of years ago, there have been some improvements made, not least to the Service pitches which as far as I could see all now follow a standard layout. Out and about there is something for just about everyone and more than enough to keep the family entertained for a week or more. Rail enthusiasts are especially well catered for with 3 very different heritage lines and the National Tramways Museum all within 30 minutes drive. I could bang on about this site for hours, the location, the views, etc etc, but I suggest that if you have not been before, give it a visit, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Ill be back soon

I was so impressed by this site. It's location is set high above the Derwent Valley and offers fantastic views. It had been a drizzly day so in the evening this view was looking down onto a cloud covered Belper, stunning. Facilities blocks were kept impeccably clean, as were the grounds in general. The staff on duty were probably the kindest and mozt friendly we have come across. So much to do within a few miles radius, but maybe like us, you will enjoy the peace, charm and tranquillity of the site so much, you wont want to venture too far!

What pub?

Site is everything others have said, compliments to the wardens who are charming and helpful. But don't be misled by the write up. The local pub may be half a country mile, and down a very steep hill, and they don't sell meals. That said, the pub has a nice atmosphere and the beer is great.
