Outstanding views

We stayed at this site on our way home to Gloucestershire for 1 night. The road is a little bit of a nightmare to get to this very well kept neat & tidy site & the Warden's were very kind & knowledgeable about the area. We tried to park our caravan as close to the view of the surrounding countryside, but unfortunately there were none available, but the view's were very outstanding. There was quite a lot of noise from speeding cars & heavy lorries, but well worth the stay.  The facilities on this site itself was immaculate. Would stay here again if ever this way.

Site with views of ONB

The rear of the site has views of outstanding natural beauty in the countryside. Idealic site that is the real essence of what the club is all about. The only fly in the ointment is daytime traffic noise but with superb classic facilities, great pitch choices tirelessly looked after by the wardens, this site is a must.

Little gem

We stayed here at end of May for one week and will definitely go back again, the views from the site are stunning with a good choice of pitches and peace and quiet. Access to many areas of interest is easy and a 10 minute walk to takes you to a great dog friendly pub with superb home cooked food, beware the steep hill if you are walking back though! My nephew did complain of lack of facilities for children and I have to agree. No play area, but he and his friends managed. The cleanliness and up keep of this site is a credit to the wardens.

Lovely site

This is a lovely site with great views from some pitches.  The toilets were spotless and the wardens work really hard to keep everything up to scratch.a credit to them both. However we booked a service pitch and we found that our water hose which is a standard size and has fitted no problem on other sites did not reach the taps on either side of the pitches. The water is not in the middle of the pitch and on some is alongway away.  You need to take an extension for some, please can this be mentioned on the website so others can be forewarned.   The site is great and we did enjoy our stay, just spoiled slightly  by us  having to move pitch to accommodate the water!!

Lucky last minute search

We found The Firs whilst doing a search for a last minute, long weekend away. We couldn't book in advance as we were not sure if we could get time off work, so we were really lucky that The firs still had space available. We got there around lunch time and were made welcome. We chose a pitch and got set up. We actually pitched our awning the wrong way at first and the warden gently explained that it was a bit close to the next pitch (we are fairly new to this!). He said he could help us move it the next morning before the people that had booked the pitch next to us arrived. Our awning is an awkward shape so he helped us position it in a much better place. The warden and his wife work really hard keeping the place spotless & the toilets and showers were lovely. The views from the picnic bench begged for photographs, the dog walk was handy & the information room was well stocked with leaflets, menus & recommended walks. There is plenty to do near the site meaning you don't have to travel far & when you've finished some of the beautiful walks you're not too far away from the showers & 'home' and can be back on site to relax in peace with a good book and your favourite drink. The site itself is well thought out and very well kept. There is a green feel and the grass & bushes give you privacy without being overgrown. Would love to stay there again.

Pretty Perfect

You always expect a certain standard in Caravan Club sites but this is seriously one of the best. Just as the previous review pointed out this is all down to the excellent hard working wardens. The facilities were truly immaculate at any time of the day, a joy on what was overall a cold and wet week. The wardens were attentive when we needed advice about our battery charger and always had time to stop for a quick chat. The site has amazing views and with the lovely Nether Heage, Heage and Belper on the doorstep, as well as Matlock just 5 miles away, it makes for a great site all round.

one of the best sites on the network

Our first visit to The Firs and it won't be our last. I don't know why it has taken so long to find what is one of the best sites on the whole network (and I don't say that lightly). But before commenting in more detail on the site geography or facilities there is one "feature" which is superlative at this site - the wardens. Most do their job well but the wardens here are the most welcoming, helpful, friendly and hard-working we have had the pleasure of staying with. Turning to the site itself there are two distinct areas. We chose to stay in the upper area which feels more open. (There was an especially "private" pitch which happened to be free.) The site isn't too large (a single couple site for the wardens) and being divided in two makes each part feel generally compact. The pitches are well spaced and even when full over a bank holiday weekend it didn't feel crowded or cramped. Some pitches have wonderful views. However there are a few pitches by the road which would be better avoided if traffic noise is unwelcome. The narrow lane is much busier than one might expect. Most upper level pitches are untroubled by road noise and none of the lower level pitches are. The facilities are quite new and up to the standards of the best the club offers. Needless to say the wardens maintain them wonderfully. I cannot think of a single thing anyone could attempt to complain about at this site. I usually comment on running and road cycling from sites but because I was there immediately before a major race I didn't attempt much. I can safely say it is hilly - the site is at the top of a hill so any run (or walk) or cycle will end with an uphill on the return. Any exercise directly from the site will be quite strenuous.

Excellent Site

This site is a hidden gem!! The wardens are lovely and extremely helpful, the facilities are spotless!! I don't usually use the shower block, I prefer the comfort of my caravan but these showers and amenities were impeccable. There's not much for children to do as no play park - our daughters older so that didn't matter for us. The Spanker Arms Pub in the village is a nice walk albeit along a narrowish road. We will definitely be back we loved this gem of a site.
