Money Spinner

There are a few good points about this site, the town and Abby are lovely, the toilet block is new, and it is close to the M5. That unfortunately sums up the good points. This site is soulless, and quite frankly depressing. It was our first visit and the purpose was to break our journey, and that is where I think the cmc have pitched this site. It is a transit camp, so the club thought " let's just rip out all the planting and cram as many pitches on as we can" . This site is all that is bad about caravan and motorhoming. Pure exploitation, cram em in and charge em high.

Well situated

Ideally situated for visiting Tewkesbury, as the town , Abbey etc are all on your doorstep and also buses to other places. Superb for Motorhomers as everything is within walking distance. If you cant stay on site after 12 then you can park in the Rugby Club next door all day for £4 [tickets available from the car park opposite] As the site has just been remodelled and the heatwave has stopped the grass growing it did look a bit bare but once the grass has grown it will look better. A few shrubs and bushes would help the overall appearance. I would also like to see a few designated paths leading to the excellent facilities block, as people will inevitably take the shortest route and a path will avoid walking across or near a pitch.

disappointed.com

having stayed here before on a few occasions we very disappointed with the new look it now looks like a caravan graveyard no atmosphere. the new facilities look smart and are much improved but whilst showering i found that i was paddling in water as it was not draining away properly this was in male and female showers also in both parts the water would change temperature on its own from nice and hot to cold all this is not what you would expect from a new block overhaul i found the whole site was to congested we will now look for alternative overnight places to stay...

Disappointed

Having visited this site many times in the past (not since approx 2013) I was looking forward to the refurbished version. It came as a bit of a shock. The once oasis had turned into a desert. Please bring back the trees! I appreciate the current weather may well have precluded any decent planting on the site and can only hope this is temporary. However the overall design of the site I feel is poor. Surrounding the Facilities block with full service pitches, while being cheaper is illogical. The general design of facilities, as others have commented on, seems to have been done by someone not knowing what they are doing. Disabled facility at opposite end to disability ramp - really! Then there are the poorly placed mirrors - almost as if the apprentice was left to finish the fittings - who also forgot to install any shelf or hand wash in the chemical toilet disposal area. I feel the design of the facilities is also very old fashioned despite being brand new. Separate showers/wash basins/toilets harks back to 1960's - the Club needs to look at the commercial competition. Thankfully the wardens were up to the usual standard and Tewkesbury is a great visit so not all negative.

So convenient!!

M5. J9 less than ten minutes to site, town centre on the door step, spotless facilities, shame about the heatwave causing problems with the new turf, but hey a few showers of rain ...regular buses to Cheltenham,Gloucester and other destinations, riverside walks and Tewkesbury Abbey.

Great stop off site for Cornwall

The site has had a brand new toilet/shower block built, it is fabulous, spotlessly clean and the water pressure is excellent. The staff are helpful, polite and cheery. The site was a perfect stop off for us on the way to Cornwall, just off the M5 and in the centre of Tewkesbury, you can walk into the centre for a wide choice of bars and restaurants. The site is right in the shadow of the beautiful Tewkesbury Abbey and for those interested, the local Park Run starts just outside the main entrance on a Saturday morning. We will use this site again to split the journey from the North East.

Surprised

We stopped over at Tewkesbury site twice - once on the way up to the Lake District, then again on the way back. We didn’t read any of the Reviews until after we got home, so had formed our opinions indepdently. However, we did read the Club blurb about the site and were a bit surprised when the site didn’t come up to expectations. There are many good points about the site. Excellent facilities, friendly Wardens, and a great location. But, considering it’s recent refurb, we expected level ground rather than the lumpy and uneven grass pitches, attractive landscaping rather than the austere field-like appearance and worst of all, we expected space but got a site that reminded us of some of the poorer commercial sites that we haven’t returned to. Having said that, we will return to this site because Tewkesbury seems to be a lovely little town which deserves more than a flying visit. We will make sure we are out of season next time so it is hopefully less crowded on the site. It may well be that the Club has attractive landscaping plans for this site but have been stymied by the extreme weather, that would be completely understandable. I agree with the Reviewer who suggested more fencing was required to help overcome the temptation to walk over other members pitches. Mind you, if it wasn’t so crowded there would be more room to create legitimate short cuts!

Comment from the Club:

Thank you to those members who have posted reviews of Tewkesbury. Obviously the Club is keen to understand what members think of the site following its recent redevelopment; in view of some of the comments that have arisen we thought that the following background might help.

Firstly, we managed to secure a new long lease which enabled the site work to go ahead as we were extremely keen to keep this site available for members to use. Securing the lease was a long, protracted process requiring considerable determination on the part of the Estates team. The redevelopment was only achieved following the receipt of planning consent which was subject to a number of planning conditions, several of which are visible in the design of the site. The toilet block is a typical example, which we had to raise to counter the Environment Agency’s flood risk concerns.

As part of the upgrade and to reduce the number of occasions when pitches are closed due to flooding we have created 50 new all weather pitches of which 18 are serviced. In total there are still the same number of pitches on site as previously. Three service points and a new (grill style) motorhome waste point have been built.

We realise that the landscaping/planting is not yet as it should be. Clearly we could have waited for this to become more established but with this extremely dry weather this possibly could have pushed the site opening date back considerably and so we felt it best to get the site open for member use so that it could be enjoyed this season.  Completing the landscaping/planting during the hot weather would have been a waste of members’ money as it would only have to be redone so the work will be scheduled later in the year. So we apologise if it remains somewhat unsightly and hope that members will understand.

The good, the bad & the ugly.

We arrived at the site & we found a pitch that was relatively level & we set up. As our motor home is over 7m in length, we prefer to set up for the duration of our stay & then we walk or use public transport if it's available? The Good - as with almost every C&MC site the toilet & shower block was excellent, & so it should be as it’s brand new. The staff keeps it very clean & well maintained. All staff were very friendly & helpful. You can take a steady five minute stroll into town where there are dozens of shops & plenty of pubs, most of which are dog friendly. The bad - we stopped on pitch 36, there was a lot of traffic noise from the neighbouring council run car park. Pitch 36 is right next to a water & recycling point & I don't remember a day where we wasn't disturbed by other campers throwing their used bottles & cans etc into the bins. Why can’t they place the rubbish into the bins? Also if you’re above about 4 feet tall, the shaving mirrors in all but one of the wash basin cubicles are a waste of time. The ugly - a short walk from the site & you are in a great park which is ideal for us to walk our dogs, let’s not ruin it by dropping litter & not cleaning up after our four legged friends, you know who you are! On a personal note, how have Tewkesbury & Gloucester councils allowed the oldest pub in the county to close down? BRING BACK THE OLDE BLACK BEAR!

First time visit after refurb

Returned to this site after many visits to see it after it had been refurbished. This is still one of our favourite sites if only for the location. As with other reviews, the refurb has a lot to be desired. On driving up the M5 to the site we read some of the previous reviews and were a little bit fearful of what we would find. The site has been updated but some of its endearing features such as the many trees and grass pitches have gone. The toilet block is a great improvement over the previous facilities with ample and good showers and is fresh and new. Despite a previous review, there are more than 1 toilet emptying points. We were excited that there was a dog washing area on the website facilities but there aren’t any (who proofreads the content of the site I wonder?) The site is very open and undulating (levelling blocks were needed). Hopefully, the sparse feel to the site will improve as plants and shrubs grow. The design of the site with a single amenity block meant that visitors created many cut throughs to get to the block. There needs to be more fencing or clearly identified routes to stop people spoiling the enjoyment of your pitch. There was a constant doorbell pinging which appeared to be coming from the site office which became irritating after a while Wardens were very helpful especially considering the issues regarding the site. Be aware that all standard pitches with awnings are grass only if you want hard standing you will need to book a standard pitch without awning or pay for a more expensive service pitch to have an awning. The site has new pitches which are block based which looks like to club is moving to accommodate motor homes more than was previously the case. Maybe us caravanners are a dying breed and will become second class members as to a choice of pitch in the future on all sites. In conclusion it is too early to judge this site and a few more visits are needed to overcome first impressions. The “new” site has some good and bad points from its previous incarnation. Only time will tell if it improves.

Many CLs offer a better experience at a third of the price.

We arrived for a short stay in Tewkesbury primarily to see the Abbey. The Site is really well positioned for all the town amenities as well as very easy to find. As others have mentioned, after paying a premium pitch fee, we had hoped for something special. It is very crowded and with no landscaping it is very much a field with pitch markers. We were around the perimeter which had a little more space than the central area. The trade off was the jovialities of the Rugby club! The new shower block is fine but not easily accessible as you appear to have to walk over occupied pitches to get to it. You do start to wonder what you are paying for at club sites, 70 litres of water and bit of electricity. I am starting to think that many CLs offer a better experience at a third of the price. Maybe we were expecting too much. However as paying customers I would like to think that the Club would be setting higher standards.
