Nice site but shame about the dog walk

We visited this site many times in the last five years. Such a shame that the club have decided to put an extra 20 pitches on what was a fabulous dog walk area which was a major attraction for us. We did have some early morning wake up noise a few times during our week visit and the work could be heard through the day but did not spoil the holiday. I was shocked and surprised to find out that there will be no extra toilet and shower facilities when the extra pitches are ready as in the male wash area there is only 4 toilet cubicles which regularly are all in use so with another 20 pitches this could cause an issue. Overall we did have a nice visit on the site which does have lots of nice walks from it and is about 15 minutes walk into Barnard castle but if you aren’t very fit it is quite a step walk back up to the site. No doubt we will be back but definitely not as much with the dog walk gone.

Pleasant stay.

This was the 3rd site out of 6 on our motorhome tour. We had a pleasant welcome from the wardens and had a fair few pitches to choose from. I had originally chosen this site for the dog field but kept my booking when the work and closure of the facility was announced. This was a real shame as we have 2 lively dogs who benefit from a run. I hope the club will be keeping some of the field for the dogs. As other reviewers have mentioned the building work was noisy during the day. However we liked the site and it's location and will try to visit again when the works are complete.

Disappointed that dog field is being developed

This site used to have a fantastic off lead dog field which was a real plus point. Sadly this has been removed to make room for more pitches. It's disappointing that the club has chosen to reduce the facilities for campers, to try and offer more places. This rush of stay at home holidaymakers won't last forever, but the site has lost a great feature.

Excellent base for exploration

An excellent site in almost every way. We stayed for just over a week at the end of July. The site was good, plenty of room and green spaces. Facilities were kept spotless and fairly new. The site is well placed for walking and cycling in the local area. Barnard Castle town is within walking distance and has a great range of shops and cafes. Barnard Castle is also a great location for exploring County Durham, the Yorkshire Dales and parts of Cumbria. We will be returning to explore more.

Love this site, shame about the dog walk

We have stayed here many times in the past and use it as a stop over on our way to Scotland. The staff are great, pitches are good and the facilities are some of the best you can find. There is a bit of road noise but that doesn't usually bother us. I normally give this site higher marks but to be honest I was very sorry that the dog field had been pinched for the extensions to the site. Why the work has to take place when the site is open I do not know, crikey the sites have been closed so much over the last couple of years due to Covid, what was wrong with either getting the work done when the site was closed or waiting until the end of the season. That aside, there really is nowhere for you to walk a dog on site at the moment There is a small bit of sloping grass which is an excuse for a dog walk. Let us hope that when the work is complete there is a decent bit of the field left for our doggies.

Enjoyable stay

Stayed at this site for 2 nights and really enjoyed our time there. Great location for walking and cycling with friendly staff. Had no issue with noise either from the road or work that is going on in the site.

Nice site

Just spent 2 nights at this site and really pleased we went there.Nice pleasant staff, spotless facilities and easy 15/20 minute walk into town, albeit partly along a main road. Some work getting done to extend site in an adjacent field but no noise issue as such during our stay.Would definitely go back.

Unbelievable noise

We arrived on Sunday to powerful motorcycles using the B road outside the site as a race track. A farmer was cutting the hay in the adjacent former dog walk field which surprised us given that the website said building works would be staring in April. We don’t mind farming sounds even during the middle of the night. However the following day heavy plant starting stripping the grass from the field before 0800 and this morning (27th) work started before 0700. This latest incident is completely unacceptable and I have reported it to Durham County Council. I’m also going to provide a quotation for the club for making good the upside down sleeping policemen left by preparation works for services to this field earlier this year. Because of sinkage there are two deep areas on the roads. However at least that slowed down the car driver going around the site well in excess of 5mph yesterday. I accept that building works brings with it noise, I let building contracts for many years in the past however a pre-7am start using heavy plant is simply not acceptable by any measure. We are off tomorrow and will be glad about it.

Comment from the Club:

Thank you for your review.

The noise was an isolated incident caused by external contractors. The start times of contractors and noise levels are now being strictly controlled.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the noise during your stay.

Beware of the noise.

We have just had a wonderful week at this club site. Excellent walks in the local area and in the lovely, peaceful Teesdale valley. BUT please be aware that the building of the extension to the site has just started. We were woken at 6.45 by the loud digger and dumper truck working just behind our caravan. We were not warned that work was to begin this week when we arrived. Sitting outside the caravan is unpleasant and in nice weather most people like to use the outside space on their pitch. This work needs to be done by next year but surely it could have started later in the year when the site is closed. Maybe the pitches near building site should be shut off or maybe the wardens could inform you when you check in.

A good site

We have visited this site several times, whilst its close to Barnard Castle, which we love, you have to walk down a busy road so have some brightly colours cloths and after dark a flashlight. There is a makeshift path but its somewhat overgrown and a grass cut would help. There is however a woodland walk into the town which is nice in dry weather as it is very muddy and slippery in wetter weather. There are some steep difficult sections. We try and be away from the pitches near the road as it can be a little noisy. Not a lot of traffic to be fair but the traffic does thunder passed. Dog walk has been closed for some time now... lets hope something soon. These are only slightly negative issues but feel the review it primarily to help customers. Its a very clean, well kept site, we love it and will continue to use it, lovely town close by and many walks in the immediate area, C & MC sort the roadside path please or make representations to local authority. signage warming of pedestrians would help and maybe a suitable speed limit.
