A great site in a wonderful area

We spent a great 4 nights at this site and loved every minute. Having read reviews that mentioned building noise from the site being extended, we chose a pitch at the other end of the site, and it was perfectly quiet. We walked into Barnard Castle via the woods, a lovely way to access the town and not muddy when we were there. We’ve been to Barnard Castle before and really like all the independent shops and friendly vibe. On the day when it was blowing a westerly gale, we caught the 95 bus to Middleton in Teesdale from outside the site (you just flag it down) and walked back via the Teesdale Way, a wonderful varied walk, partly on the banks of the Tees and partly up on the hills above it. Halfway back we had a great lunch at the Coach House in Eggleston. The other two days were fine, dry and sunny – and still – so perfect for cycling. One day we retraced the bus route via the pretty villages to Middleton where we can recommend the Tees Pot café – very friendly staff and customers, had lunch and stocked up on cakes for the way back, on the slightly busier B road back to base via Eggleston. The last day we ventured north of the site, to the Hamsterley Forest, a hillier ride but with magnificent long views in all directions. There’s plenty of parking in the Forest and bike hire – we saw lots of families enjoying the trails on foot and on bikes, and for the more adventurous (ie not us!) there are loads of challenging mountain bike trails. Ours are hybrid bikes and we kept to the well surfaced main ‘Forest Drive’. So with so much to do in the area on foot and 2 wheels, we’ll definitely be back before too long, and look forward to stocking up again on local produce at the excellent Mainsgill Farm shop on the A66 between Scotch Corner and the site – look out for the resident camels!!

No peace for the campers (at least if you're near the building work)

A reasonable site, and reasonably well located if you want to walk into the town of Barnard Castle to get your eyes tested or just to visit the castle. A word (or two) of warning though. The walk along the busy road can be quite dangerous due to a very narrow path and the alternative walk through the forest can be.... muddy. Very muddy. There used to be a large meadow here at the site that was an enviable dog walk area, but this is currently being transformed into extra hardstanding pitches. There doesn’t appear to be a replacement planned, which is disappointing. The work on the new site commences at 0700 and goes on until 1800, so expect a full day of noise if you chose a pitch nearby.

One of the best

This caravan park is a first class site .clean and tidy and although the dog walk meadow is closed whilst the alterations are being done its a great place for dog owners . The wardens are helpfull when required and a low profile when they are not. The pitches are good but a bit noisy near the road. If I had to nit pick in the pot washing area they have supplied a paper towel dispenser I assume to wipe down the sinks after use but no waste bin to put the paper in after . Its a nice walk into barnard castle whether through the wood or via the road its a pity the pavement isn't all the way down the road though. So take a torch. Few years ago a mobile chip shop used to come to the site on Sat evenings its a shame that's no more because it was brilliant. All in all I'd recommend this site

A lovely well kept site.

We stayed for 2 weeks in September. Upon our arrival we had a very friendly welcome by the site staff, and their friendliness was there through our stay. It is about a 15 minute walk into Barnard Castle, or slightly longer if walking along the river which can be found in woodland at the rear of the site. We found Barnard Castle a very pleasant market town, whose castle is well worth a visit. The site staff work very hard to maintain the immaculate site and facilities, in fact, the site is a credit to the staff and club.

One night stop over while travelling to the lakes

A pleasant site with a warm welcome on arrival. Clean and tidy facilities. There was some road noise early evening and in the morning from passing traffic but not distracting from the ambiance of the site. Shame about the lack of dog walking area (which we knew about before visiting) as the road passing the site has no real footpaths. Otherwise a great site if you are visiting the Barnard Castle area.

Used this site as a stopover. Friendly and efficient booking in. Good sized pitch. Clean and well kept facility block. Easy walk into Barnard Castle either along the road or through the nature reserve.

Excellent site

Such a lovely site. Lots of flowers about, in buckets by the water points. Lots of bird feeders dotted around between pitches. Great toilets and showers, warm and 3 hooks in the large shower cubicle. Easy check in. 20 walk into the town. Lovely area. Highly recommend. Not noisy.

The "Dominic Cummings Trail" to Barnard Castle . + Fish & Chips at 149 .....

Now we know why Dominic Cummings visited Barnard Castle " during lockdowngate ". No doubt looking for Absolutely The Best Fish and Chips we have ever tasted at Fish and Chips 149.... ... We always wondered why a queue appeared outside this Fish and Chip shop " just across the road from Three Horseshoes Hotel . Have to say its worth walking to Barney from the site just for some find a bench and tuck in ( No seagulls either ) . Easy walking route As other reviewer stated . Down the hill then cross the Pedestrian Bridge on your left . Walk up to the town and you will find yourself at the top of Barney and near Morrisons store. 20 mins max but watch the first 300 yards without a proper path. We stayed at Barnard C then drove to Hawes site and then Barnard C again . The Wardens at BC are top class and booking in isnt such a big event as it seems to be at Hawes Site , This site Opens at 12 mid day with no messing . Fast process and choose your pitch all of which are white pin. simple. The TV booster gave us over 100 TV channels ( while Hawes site didnt work at all.) Many reviews mention the road noise and the site is currently being extended but at night its totally peaceful. not a sound apart from owls hooting and the road noise isnt too bad depending on where you pitch . We have been to about 20 C&MHC sites this year since lockdown and highly rate Teesdale Barnard Castle. 1.The Best Site 2.The Best Location , 3. The Best Wardens 4. Best Fish and Chips .. 5. Best and most interesting friendly place to visit . Also has a really good Specsaver Branch . if you know what we mean .!

Barnard Castle Teesdale Site

Had a very pleasant five day stay at this site during the third week in August.2021. The site is very well kept and the toilets and showers are excellent. There is vehicle noise from the main road during the day, however it was vastly reduced for my family and I due to siting the caravan behind the lower level behind the trees adjacent to the toilet block. The information regarding the distance from the site to the centre of Barnard Castle village varies, I can tell you that it is not 1.2 miles, it's more like half a mile. The quickest route is by turning right from the site on to Lartington Lane. Walk down the hill towards the narrow right hand bend in the road. On the left is a pathway to an old Victorian iron bridge over the river tees. Cross the bridge and follow the top right pathway through the small woodland. This road brings you out to the left of the Castle and the village is directly in front of you. This route is not recommended for the elderly or infirm as the route on the path is quite steep. The second route is around a mile in length. Similarly follow the route via Lartington Lane. Continue over the small bridge where the road narrows at the bottom of the lane, continue straight on the the road bridge on the left. This is about half a mile from the site. Cross the bridge following the main road up the hill towards the village. In the village there are quite a few places to eat and drink. May I recomend the Three Horseshoes Hotel and Pub. This pub and hotel has a lovely atmosphere, set in a three hundred year old building. The ideal watering hole for anyone with a thirst! Anyone who likes pies( I do because I am from Wigan) must try the butchers shop McFarlane on the corner of the two main streets, which are The Bank and Galgate, Lovely village with really friendly people. Will visit again next year. Thank you. Bob Silcock. Wigan
