Barnard Castle Club Site

The site is small and the wardens work very hard to keep the site clean, we would say the site was mint. Lots of great walks near, and a taxi into Barnard Castle is £5 with Alan’s taxi. The site overlooks to one side a wood which is very nice to walking and on the opposite side of the wood is a prison which you do not really notice are hear. The site is 12 miles away from high force waterfall. Good electrics they never tripped once and All pitches have a TV point for good reception. Very well done to the 4 wardens. 😀😀

A week at Barny

Nice, well kept site, warden was pleasant on arrival. Didn't come into contact with them anymore after that. Nice walk through the woods by the river to the town. Plenty of places to go, depending on what you like.

Great site well-placed for walkers

Booked at short notice for 3 nights in our tourer, our first stay at this site. Finding the site is very easy as it's on the main road between Barnard castle and Lartington. Our reception was very friendly and Covid-safe and we were quickly into the site and selecting our pitch. The warden stressed the importance of positioning on the peg - as they do. When I said I knew the rules and would be no trouble, she told me that CAMC had a lot of new members and it could be like herding cats! True to this, on entering I was immediately blocked by a camper with an immaculate new 'van with a motor-mover he couldn't work, trying to manoeuvre into a position that would have gotten him into some bother! I was happy to put him right and save him a ticking-off. Most of this small site is adjacent to a main road, but it is possible to pitch a little quieter if you're an early arriver. We weren't this fortunate, but found that traffic wasn't too bad and quieted down nicely in the evening. As empty-nesters we didn't miss the lack of facilities for children, but we do have a dog and thought it a shame that the dog field was closed. However, there are a myriad of footpaths and river walks very close by, perfect for a Black Lab, so Max loved the site. facilities are very Covid-safe, so no worries there. Everything was as immaculate as we've come to appreciate from the CAMC. The selling point of this site though is its location. Ten minutes amble gets one to Barnard Castle, and there is very good hiking, either from the site or close by, including excellent stretches of the Teesdale Way. We will certainly return.

Lovely site

This was our first visit to this site, were booked for 4 nights. We were so lucky to make it eventually as we couldn't get the van out when we were due to travel due to a car having partly parked outside our gates! We called the site to postpone our arrival by one day and lovely Jan was so understanding. The following day, we still couldn't get out so we called the site again and cancelled. However, the following day, we could escape! We called the site again and Jan reinstated our booking with one extra day. Jan was brilliant. The site is well laid out, lovely pitches and the grounds well maintained. The facilities were spotless. The pitch we were on was beautifully levelled but close to the road which affected our first night sleep but ear plugs solved the problem. Lovely walks to Barnard Castle along the river. All in all, it was very enjoyable despite the bad weather. Would love to re-visit the site when the weather is good and we have more time.

Great location and site

This is our second visit, and unfortunately it rained for most of our visit. Having said that the site is very well positioned to access Barnard Castle, a short walk either down the road (which has a handmade path - not great with a dog) or out of the site at the bottom end and then down the hill and onto the footpath on the right. This takes you down into the Nature Reserve, it can be very muddy but its such a beautiful walk (bluebells at the moment) From here you can walk either to the left into Barney or to the right if you wish to have a longer walk in the reserve. As previously mentioned there are lots of walks along the river in BC. The site is very well kept, its a shame the dog walk is closed cause its great, but it will be interesting to see the site upgrade. There is a drying room on site, presume its for boots and coats etc. but didn't use and a dog/bike wash which is very useful when you have a very wet and muddy dog!! There are many cafe's and restaurants in Barnard Castle, 149 the Fish & Chip Shop is fab, and in the evening you can park right outside or park in the Morrissons Carpark, which is easy with a motorhome. Raby Castle and High Force are both easy to access with a Motorhome and are worth a visit. Bowes Museum is also nearby, but never visited.

Lovely walks direct from the site

Our first visit to this site, and we have no doubt we will be back. The site is in excellent condition, and the hard standing pitches were well spaced and very well maintained. Some road noise can be annoying, but otherwise peace itself. We had a serviced pitch which was a blessing. We didn't use any facilities on site so can't comment. A miriad of footpaths close to the site leading into Deepdale Nature Reserve, and an easy walk into Barnard Castle where there are more footpaths ( Teesdale Way along the river) the castle, pubs cafes and shops. Our only complaint was the lack of assistance from the wardens when we complained about the poor or non existing WiFi, despite the antennas on site and the so called bronze rating. The comment " we struggle too " didn't help. A few comments on Twitter and Facebook, and to their credit, Air Angel, the WiFi providers miraculously turned the WiFi on, a shame it took till our 4th day, but hey ho !!

First visit

Spent two nights on this lovely site. Very efficient check in and out. Facilities immaculate and the rubber band system for the toilets and showers work perfectly. A short twenty minutes walk into the town where there is a good variety of shops, restaurants and bars. Will visit again. Well done to the wardens

Doing ones best

Just spent 2 weeks at this site and under difficult circumstances the wardens are doing a fine job . The site is kept clean and they can't do enough for you and if you pick your time to use the facility's everything runs reasonably smoothly.

Lovely location

Stayed a few times here in the last twelve months and always found the staff extremely helpful and the facilities immaculate. I do get the fact that a few members grumble about the traffic noise but I’m not a light sleeper so had no issues personally. I’m not sure that the volume of traffic passing both daytime and through the night would put the road in to the “busy” category used by some other reviewers. A few people also expressed some reservations regarding the walk in to town with parts of the road not having a footpath but we did it numerous times with a wheelchair user in the party without issues as any motorists we encountered were courteous and gave us plenty of room. Whilst on the subject of wheelchair users there is a surfaced bridle path on the edge of town which runs along the river for a mile or two, giving the opportunity for those needing wheeled transport to see parts of the country that are not often accessible to them. Finally, and again on a wheelchair related note, nearly all CAMC sites have good disabled shower facilities but those here are exceptional in terms of cleanliness and layout. We’ll be back soon.

Clean site but on a busy and noisy road

Small clean friendly site but next to a very busy noisy road during the day, lovely walk into town through the woods but don't walk down the main road as there is no path for most of the way and the cars drive very fast up and down the road. Easy access to the centre and other places for visiting. We stayed on a fully serviced pitch but it was too close to the road for my liking. Would probably go again but would ask for one of the electric only pitches furthest away from the road next time.
