A great site and a great town. We love the layout of this site, which makes it feel smaller than it is but pitches are spacious. It’s exceptionally clean and we felt very safe in regard to Covid. The town has some nice places to eat. We visited Valentines restaurant on two occasions during our stay and would highly recommend it. Great, reasonably priced food and lovely staff. The social distancing measures, with screens between tables, was excellent. It’s a 15 minute walk into town and there are some nice walks near the site. We got the bus from outside the site to Middleton-in-Teesdale and from there you can get a bus to High Force but this bus only runs on a Wednesday. Our second visit but not our last.
Superb!
This was our first stay at a club site and what a gem it was. The welcome was lovely and informative, the facilities spotless and warm which on a drizzly, windy March evening was very much appreciated and the location perfect for us. Before arriving we travelled to the Bowlees Visitor Centre and did a circular walk from there to visit the Low and High Force Waterfalls and then checked in late afternoon at the site. Once set up we walked into Barnard Castle opting for the road route due to the woodlands being so muddy and went to a dog friendly pub as recommended to us when we checked in. The second day we did another circular to Lartington setting off from the site and into the woods and had a late lunch in Barnard Castle. All in all a fantastic location for our little two nighter away and extremely peaceful.
Lovely site
Lovely site and a good location for visiting Barnard Castle. Lots of wildlife including a herd of deer running alongside where we were pitched. Our only complaint is the shower block, clean and tidy as we would expect however the showers were luke warm (no need of cold water here) and the shower bock itself was cold. This actually had an up side however, no one loitered for long as we hurried back to our warm vans.

Visit to North of England
This is a high quality site set just outside the town of Barnard Castle. All pitches are hard standing and all are level as far as I could see. The site itself is on two levels with one central facilities block and the pitches set out in an oval shape around the office and facilities. The facilities are of a very high standard and are kept extremely clean. In the male section there were four wc's, four privacy cubicles, four urinals, two sinks and six showers. There are several rubbish/recycling/chemical disposal points around the site. Although there is a road running parallel to the upper section of the site it is not overly busy and did not cause any nuisance. A chip van visits the site on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Buses to Barnard Castle and Middleton on Tees stop outside the site on request, however the service is not frequent and finishes quite early in the evening - sometime just before 19:00 hours if I remember correctly. Barnard Castle is only a few minutes bus ride and the town could be walked in about 15 minutes. There is a good selection of pubs and restaurants in the town.
Disappointing
After 30 years experience with the club and other visits to this site was disappointed overall. The facilities were good as always but the fact that there were no suitable pitches for the disabled wheelchair or mobility scooter user was a big no go. All pitches are hard standing but with very loose deep gravel which is totally unsuitable for the movement of either electric wheelchair or mobility scooters. We recommended this site to our daughter and on her visit with us on adjacent pitch she was completely trapped! Her support worker was however given a shovel and had to dig and clear a pathway in and around her MOHO so she could exit the pitch. Our pitch was similar for husbands mobility scooter but we did exit without a shovel! I suggested to the staff that perhaps a couple of pitches could have a better surface for the disabled and was told that " in all honesty we have to go with majority of members requests and we do not get many users of mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs etc using the club! " Are the disabled being discriminated against? Such a disappointing end to a break away with our family especially after them joining the club on our recommendation and on their first trip away to a site with their Moho. Hopefully some notice will be taken of our comments and others will benefit in the future.
Great Stay in spite of the Rain
This was our first visit to this area, and to this site. We stayed in mid-October, in the middle of a lot of rain and wind. The wardens were extremely friendly and helpful on arrival. They sorted us out with gas when we discovered that we had run out and suggested somewhere in town to get a meal. The shop was very handy and stocked some useful essentials. The toilet facilities were absolutely immaculate and very warm and welcoming. The site is extremely tidy and well kept, and our pitch was perfectly level, and there was plenty of room. The services were all fully working and excellently maintained and handy, making pitching very easy and straightforward.
The site is within walking distance of Barnard Castle, but it wasn't fit to walk into town most of the time we were there. In town, there were nice shops and places to eat and drink, but on a Sunday evening, we could find no-one doing food at all. The Co-op has a good range of food that is easy to cook and prepare in the caravan. There are some lovely walks along the riverside, and due to the rain, High Force waterfall, a few miles away, was spectacular.
As far as the site is concerned, the only drawback was some traffic noise from the road that goes past it, although we didn't have a problem with this ourselves. We did enjoy the owl activity, and saw a barn owl fly past our caravan on the first evening, which was actually dry. We would definitely recommend this site to anyone looking for a quiet stay and plenty of walking, but just hope that they have better weather than we did!
First time visit to this Teesdale site...
This was our first time visiting this site, received a very nice welcome from the staff when booking in, as it was our first visit all amenities and locations explained. Located a very nice pitch on the lower level close to the basic water facilities and not too far away from the shower block. As our visit was in the first few days of October the weather wasn’t grand but we enjoyed our time here, it gave us the opportunity to visit Barnard Castle on market day as well as lovely locations such as High and Low Force on the River Tees. Seeing the torrent of water coming down the waterfalls was photogenic.
Overall this site is a brilliant place to visit as it gives you the opportunity to relax in a very peaceful environment. A bonus was being able to listen to and trying to spot the owls that seemed to be prolific in the woods to the south of the site.
We shall return to this site in the future of that I am positive.
Brilliant Site
I was lucky enough to stay at this site on 6 and 7 October 2019. The directions were spot on and I managed to arrive without any wrong turns on my way back down from the Western Highlands of Scotland.
The lady warden checked me in and and was extremely welcoming and friendly. The items on sale in reception were very handy. She gave me a couple of handouts showing walking directions to the town and a bus timetable.
The shower block and toilets were immaculately clean. All the service points were very well organised, clean and tidy.
The market town of Barnard Castle is a delight and a lovely walk from the site.
The site was very peaceful and where I was pitched I could hear the river rushing along.
Will definitely visit again in the Spring/Summer to take advantage of the good weather.

One of our favourites
We love this site, spotless facilities, friendly helpful staff. This is our second visit, it is ideally situated with a pleasant half mile walk into Barnard Castle. There is a huge dog walk area, it is a site very popular with dog owners as there are also excellent walks from the site. The site is lovely & peaceful with large hard standing pitches, the site was full the whole time we were there but it didn't seem crowded at all. There is a mention of road noise in the book and it is fair to say that there is some but it didn't go on late at night, we were pitched very near the road and it certainly didn't bother us at all. The mobile fish & chip van is excellent and is there twice a week. we're already planning next years trip here
Setting the 'bar'
My wife and I planned a big tour around Northern England, several sites - 18-28 September.
Have been motorhomes since 2014. We both agree this is the best quality and facility site we have stayed at in our 5 years.
Immaculately neat and well-tended site. Extremely friendly staff, cheerful to us arriving after several rainy days. Probably there best 'dog field' adjacent site we have seen. Toilet/showers block immaculate. Even a nice touch of hedge-lined pavement walk, between main areas for pitches, to the Toilet/showers block. What, with the pretty and ancient town of Barnard Castle, and 25 minute woodland/beck walk from site to town, this site is now our No. 1
