Great site for 'Barnie'

First visited this site when it originally opened as a brand new caravan club site about 7 years ago. Everything was a bit raw then, even the grass turf still needed watering to stop it curling up. Now, the site has matured superbly with wonderful bushes and shrubbery, and the hedge along the roadside has thickened a bit but still allows a bit of traffic noise for the pitches closest to the road. A fairly recent addition is the very large rough grassy field for the Dog Walk, with mown pathways around and across the field. Superb, and one of the best for dogs - very safe. There is the public footpath to Barnard Castle close by which sadly is still accessed by a very unfriendly and potentially dangerous and steep sideways sloping path to a steep drop. Once down that 'scramble' the main public pathway follows the river but is a bit narrow and overgrown with tall bogland plants - no views and not really attractive which is probably why most walkers seemed to choose to go by the main road instead! It is a great pity but much easier and safer actually! Barnard Castle is always busy, always chock-a-block with cars, but is one of our favourite stops boasting lots of superb shops, but watch out for the Pay-and-Display parking at Morrisons !!! And the Bowes Museum (in Barnard Castle itself) is great value for multiple visits all in the cost of one ticket for a year of visits, and FREE car parking. We will be back - and sooner than another 7 years.

Busy site.

We decided to book for 4 nights on the way from Scotland, we only stayed for 3, and cancelled our Sunday night stop on a Friday morning but this didn't stop us getting caught out by the 72hour rule!! The site isn't too hard to find, but it is on a very busy road, and some pitches overlook a prison, once the trees grow this will improve. The woodland walk into Barnard castle was very muddy, and comes out on a bad bend on a busy road so could be dangerous. We found crossing by the site, better and walking straight down the verge which is partly pavemented quicker, cleaner and a safer place to cross. The fascilities and staff were lovely, the help with directions one of the lady wardens gave me back to the A66 was spot on. Barnard Castle is a nice town, but all other attractions are a good drive away. We did find it a very busy site, so doubt it will become one of our favourites. We found a lot of dog owners use this site, and they don't all use the dog walk as we saw dogs being aloud to muck on pitches, this is bad owners not site problem. Also we did wonder why we had a lot of flies in our awning until we found a dead baby rat under the awning skirt!! We did report and my husband cleared it up. You can expect vermin sometimes but it a first for us.

A Most Helpful Warden

We booked a one night stopover at Barnard Castle on Friday 8 September to break our journey traveling north. The site was very nice with spacious modern pitches and good facilities in the amenity block including a drying room. What has prompted me to post a review was not just the site but the wardens. Yes, they work hard to make our stay pleasant and often take some stick for things people arn't happy with but my experience here of things that went wrong and the help I was given made me decide to post a review. This was not a problem with the site though. All was going well on the morning tow up the A1 until the overhead matrix boards started to show "A66 Closed" I didn't know then what had happened but a 67 tonne excavator had fallen off a transport lorry blocking the road in both directions and it wasn't going to be cleared for some time. As massive queues built up it began to look like a job for International Rescue. I know the A1 well but not the local roads around it so decided to pull off and find a stopping place to check the map for alternative routes. I had only been in the layby for a few minutes when my mobile rang, it was the lady warden from Barnard Castle to advise me of the access problem via the A66. She asked me which direction I was approaching from and gave me the best alternative route to get through to the site. She said she was calling all the arrivals that morning to make them aware of the problem. This was fantastic help when I was stuck with a lack of knowledge of the local roads. I followed the advised route along with the unavoidable congestion which added about two hours to our journey but we got through to the site in the best time possible. I hope the powers that be in our club administration note the help and dedication that this lady was providing to the members affected by the traffic disruption. A bad experience dissipated by unexpected help. A big thank you to the warden. FAB.

2nd visit and it won't be the last

We all love this site, the amenities are excellent and kept lovely and clean. The dog walking area gets our little Russell's seal of approval, we love to have a steady walk down to Barny and explore the shops. The wardens are first class and I can't thank them enough for helping when I had to take a trip to hospital. They kept an eye out for my wife and even offered to dog sit if she needed to go over to the hospital, we were also helped by our Caravaning neighbors from the pitch opposite. Wonderful people and a wonderful site!

Perfect for 3-4 relaxing days

Enjoyed our stay here, en-route to the Northumbrian Coast. Three days seemed about right to visit the high-spots of the area, although for a more relaxing time you'd stay longer. Pitches against the road are a bit noisy from passing traffic - not terrible, but we felt we'd have preferred a pitch further from the road. All pitches are hard-standing, which we don't like. My advice on things to do: 1. The Swan in the Bowes Museum. The museum is worth a full day, but the swan is the high-point. Check it's still performing when you are coming because we heard it's being dismantled for renovation. 2. High Force waterfall. The best waterfall I've seen in the UK. Plenty of flow. The main viewing spot requires just a short walk, but it's well worth seeing it from the other side too, which is a 2-3 mile round-trip walk from the same car park. 3. There are plenty of pubs serving good food, but for a meal that's a cut-above your average pub offering, go to The Crown at Mickleton. About 20 minutes drive from the site and dog-friendly too.

Stop over

We used this site as a 1 night stop on or way back from Scotland. Beautifully kept and very good shower/toilet facilities. Good walking direct from the site and into the town. We were towards the back of the site and did not have any problems with road noise. We had very good chips from the visiting van (Saturday). will stay longer next visit.

Lovely site

We have visited this site on numerous occasions and always enjoy this lovely area. Current wardens very welcoming, accommodating and helpful. Clean, tidy, well kept. Excellent toilet block facilities. Great dog walking field but as always on most sites we go to there are always the minority of members who think it is acceptable to leave dog mess on the dog walks which gives all dog owners a bad name it is not difficult to pick up every time! Barney is a very nice market town within easy walking distance and has everything you could need while there. Nice, relaxed atmosphere on site. Excellent fish and chip van visits site twice a week. Thanks for a lovely stay and hope to return in the near future.

Fantastic Site

We booked this site as it was midway between the coast to coast bike ride that my husband was taking part in. The site was lovely, well maintained, peaceful and the staff were amazing. The site facilities were great and always clean, the play park was great and the children loved the layout of the site as it meant they could ride around safely and be easily seen. Barnard Castle is just around the corner a few minutes by car and with grown up children a 15-20 minute walk. The town has everything you need and the castle is worth a visit. In Darlington there is a birds of prey centre, it is located in the same area as a hotel. It is definitely worth a visit the staff clearly love birds and are very knowledgable. The display is great and the staff try to involve children as much as they can.

A classic CMC site

One of the best sites we have visited in all our years of caravanning. The site is perfectly located to enjoy the local area, the beautiful Swaledale moors was our favorite. Barnard Castle which is an easy walk from the site is well worth a visit with The Bowes Museum (good value for money) and easy parking, the castle and nice shops, pubs and restaurants. We had not visited this area before and we were not disappointed. We found the small local towns and villages were lovely, easy parking at fair prices and sometimes free. The site is excellent, well laid out with plenty of room between pitches, we did not feel hemmed in at all. The shower and toilet facilities are new with large shower cubicles and the cleanest we have ever seen. Well done to the wardens for presenting such a lovely site.

First Visit to Barney

Our first visit to this lovely site. First impressions good with an excellent, friendly welcome from the warden ten out of ten! We had to go on a fully serviced pitch as this was all that was available for our dates. We would not normally bother with fully services and found the ground very hard for pegging out our awning. There is a fair bit of noise from the adjacent road which is not particularly busy but traffic passes by fast! Barnard Castle is attractive and an easy stroll from the site. A bus service stops at the gate, but you need to request them to stop as it is not a designated bus stop. Middleton in Teesdale is a pretty village worth a visit and walks nearby are plentiful. The Crown Inn at Mickleton is a fabulous pub worth a visit. This is a lovely part of the world to visit and was particularly spectacular with the May blossom. Teesdale Way disused railway track is good for cycling/walking too.
