Another great visit!

This was our second visit to Start Bay and will not be our last! A warm welcome from the site staff as always. The site is quite small which we like and the pitches are well spaced out. We took the bus to Kingsbridge (dog friendly) and had a lovely walk around the town despite the rain. There is a great little dog friendly cafe called The Pantry. The local farm shop is a delight, the cake was very good! (Carrot and Red Velvet). The beach at Torcross is lovely for a walk and spot of fishing (we caught a mackerel for dinner!) All in all everything at this site is great and well kept. I look forward to many more visits.

5 Star

6 friends have just spent 10 glorious days enjoying this fabulous site, great location to enjoy the picturesque coastal towns offering great pubs and restaurants in the area, only a short walk to the coast. The wardens Tina and Chris always there to give everyone such a very warm and friendly welcome who go above and beyond to ensure that all their guests have the best possible experience. The site is immaculate, equally the facilities are kept spotlessly clean at all times. A fantastic farm shop and café just a short walk away where you can enjoy delicious freshly prepared food, teas and coffees and a recently built micro brewery. Shop is extremely well stocked with fresh local produce, mini garden centre and craft shops. Do not miss the Start Bay Inn where there will be a menu option to be served with their famous jumbo cod and chips. We will look forward to our next visit. THANKYOU for a memorable stay Andrea and Tony Jarvis PS - it has taken me 3 days to locate on the website how to write this review!!!

Great wardens, great site

Just spent 6 nights at this Site. The wardens, Tina and Chris, were extremely welcoming and friendly (nothing was too much trouble and we needed their help with both our TV and BBQ). It is a lovely site and kept immaculate - you can sit and listen to bird song all day. The road approaching is quite narrow in places - but take it easy and you’ll be fine. The farm shop (about 10 mins walk from the Site) is well worth a visit - lovely cafe and plenty of food supplies (nice fresh meat counter). Also a short work in the other direction (10 mins) to Stokenham, the Trademan’s Arms, a very friendly pub and great food - well worth a visit. Overall a great site, great wardens and beautiful location - we will be back. I only marked the Site 3 for families as we don’t have children so not best placed to comment.

What a gem

We had booked this site for the Easter break as it was not too far to travel. The drive from Kingsbridge was a bit tricky in places but as long as you take your time it is not too difficult. The roads in rural Devon are narrow in places and we found that on the whole most drivers were considerate. The site was lovely and spotlessly clean and we could not have asked for better weather. The wardens as always on club sites go above and beyond to ensure your visit is comfortable. We can recommend the farm shop and micro brewery is only a 10 minute walk away and the brewery this Easter was open in the evenings. A 15 minute walk in the other direction takes you to Stokenham where there is another watering hole that does food. We did not however eat at the Tradesmans Arms. Torcross is an easy stroll and was good for my husband and the dog for an early morning run. In all we loved the site and the area and will be back.

Go slowly to get here!

Stayed at Start Bay for 6 days at the end of March. Caught the beautiful weather so couldn't be happier. The site is lovely, just a nice size and has a great shower block etc. The wardens, Tina and Chris, could not have been more welcoming, even giving us some bread as we had run out and the local shops were shut when we arrived at the site. They keep the site in great condition. The local farm shop is excellent (five minutes walk), as is the Start Bay Inn some 15 minutes walk away on the sea front. The site is in a great location but I have only rated it four stars due to the slightly tricky route in. Three small villages with numerous pinch points and very awkward if you are towing. We actually got stuck as someone had parked a van in a passing place and we had to try and find him to get it moved. Eventually, with traffic backed up both ways, we got through. The secret is to go slowly and wait your turn but it can be a bit stressful. The site is sufficient reward for all that effort and we had a great 6 days. We will return as it is central to that part of Devon being only a few miles from Dartmouth, Salcombe, Totnes etc.

Nice site near to coast

Had a lovely stay here just couple of nights, walked to Start point lighthouse which is a nice walk, along the coast path. Also within 15 mins walk is a nature reserve which is worth visiting. The pitch was a nice size, although they did vary, was gravel hard standing, but they do have some grass pitches when the weather/ ground condition allow (stayed end of March 2019). My pitched sloped a little but easy to get caravan level. Wardens were very friendly and although the washrooms were dated, they worked perfectly and were clean and warm. Lots of useful information in the information room. Would return even though the site is near home for me. Was peaceful on site, could hear birds in the surrounding trees and the site has traffic free paths leading from it, although you do need to cross a small road and walk in pavement/side of road for short section on way to Torcross. Well worth while if you want peace and some nice walking nearly.

Well kept site that was called Stokeley Meadow, Kingsbridge.

When I last stayed here 50 years ago, the site was called Stokeley Meadow, Kingsbridge. I suppose Start Bay is a better name for marketing the site. In 1968, as a 10-year old, I had an eerie feeling the whole holiday that something terrible had happened here. I've never felt anything like it before or since. Ken Small's book about the disastrous secret April 1944 'Exercise Tiger' published in 1988 finally provided an explanation for me. The recovered Sherman Tank at Torcross still creates a lot of interest. Access to the site is temporarily more difficult via narrow roads from Kingsbridge due to the A379 being closed until late Autumn 2018 by Slapton/Strete. Some of the locals seem to think they can drive through your vehicle, which makes the narrow roads challenging to say the least. The site is well kept by the wardens who never seem to stop working. We have a Motorhome, so no car. Kingsbridge is a 20 minute bus ride away, but is sadly very run down with lots of empty shops. It's an easy walk to Torcross, which has an excellent pub and cafes/restaurants. Our old dogs enjoyed a daily walk on the beach. We enjoyed riding our electric bikes to have a look at Slapton.

Our Favourite Site So Far

What a lovely little site! The wardens were extremely helpful and friendly. They went above and beyond when our fridge broke down, freezing ice blocks for us and putting food in their own fridge. Crisis averted! We would describe this as a small and friendly site. Yes, the roads are rather narrow and nerve wracking at times and we advise you ignore your sat nav if you decide to visit Dartmouth. We were sent down incredibly narrow tracks in our camper van which was very stressful. Take advice from the wardens first. But it is a beautiful area. Slapton Sands is unspoilt and stunning, which is about 20 minutes' walk away. The Start Bay Inn is right on the sea front and serves fantastic food. The Seabreeze cafe is also recommend, serving lovely coffee and cakes. The nearby farm shop and deli is well worth a visit. We also stayed the night in early September that some other campers left at around 4am and were very noisy. They woke my husband too but that isn't the fault of the wardens. We loved the campsite and the area and will definitely return for a longer stay.

Clean site

This is a typical CMC site, clean and well laid out. What sets it apart is the location, although beautiful area, the roads are a total nightmare. I have towed for several years now the road from Kingsbridge scared the living daylights out of me. Blind corners meeting buses, vans and lorries head on left me needing a very stiff drink on arrival. I would not advise novice towers to attempt this road!
