A good Holiday

A great holiday for us in our motorhome. The site was not to big and beautifully kept, the wardens were always very helpful and supplied any information that could be of help to us. The toilets and showers were spotless. I think the only down side was that some of the roads are very narrow and as long as you go slow and take care all will be fine. The weather was perfect and we had lots of local walks. We will hopefully go again and stay a little longer

Peaceful 2 weeks

It is 14 years since we last came here and the site is still the same. Clean and relaxing. Showers and toilet block immaculate and wardens were fantastic. They were ‘on it’ at all times when they saw something amiss ensuring the stay for all was as good as it could be. This area has its own mini micro climate and the weather is often different to 6 miles up the road in Kingsbridge. We do not recall the path that now leads to the turn off for the farm shop and think this is new (well done in last 14 years!). As a runner I could never run from the site to the beach as it was only a road access. Now you can run or walk which is great. The beach is pebbly and the best pebbles there are for miles washed down from Dartmoor. Or so my husband tells me as he is a geologist!! We ended up on a grass pitch which we are not so fond of but our guinea pigs loved it and as we are well versed in staying on sloping sites it was not too bad. The one thing we have noticed since we last stayed on a members only site is the way in which the behaviour of a minority of caravanners has changed. Whilst we were there we experienced the following: music played loudly until 1 am, a woman washing her dog under the clean water tap, football played in between vans, children riding bikes and scooters around areas where there were signs saying not to, a full blown tent set up at the back of a caravan when it specifically says ‘no tents’ on the entry to the site, washing machine and dryer left full when the cycles had completed and no one to empty them for another person to use so I ended up doing this, dogs not on leads and when I politely asked the man in the van behind ours to put his dog on a lead as I wanted to out my guinea pigs out in their small run he swore at me and refused and then the obvious one of cars tearing around the site ignoring the 5 mph signs. Unfortunately this type of behaviour from a minority spoils it for the majority.

what a relief.......

Start Bay thankyou thank you thank you......a lovely site with a great ambience and it just works well. what is special about the site? nothing at all its just a great pretentious free site with simple amenities that work well and staff that are friendly. as said the drive down is a bugger but hmmm maybe come in a diff route and it would be a different experience. its a shame that such a small seaside town has rip off prices on food and ice creams.....cmon £4.90 for a kids tub of ice cream......heck i needed a second mortgage to feed the family lol. back to start bay, maybe a 2nd shower block so that when it comes to upgrading or maintenance work you have a block free. it was great to see kids whizzing about on bikes and scooters and being kids not expected to be quiet and behave.......we take the budgie with us as harry loves it......someone else had an African grey and that was cool. being sited next to the water smelt a bit but we sorted nps with some scented candles......we loved it and will be back (as arnie said) Clarkes from westbury in winnie the motorhome

The site is very nice and the wardens certainly keep it very clean & tidy. Where it is situated is a very nice walk to the beach and local pub. The down side is the journey from Kingsbridge to the site. This is around six unavoidable miles enroute to the site. There are at least 9 very narrow bits on the road that you have to navigate very slowly and carefully. We had a very bad experience with these obstructions and it has put us off doing the journey again. Some of the local people would not give way and this made it a nightmare with the narrow bits of road, we got stuck several times and feared that we would lose our.Caravan or suffer terrible damage. Ideally you need to know the bus timetables so as to avoid oncoming buses and try especially to avoid days when there may be events in any of the villages. Nice site but like so many others, we won’t go back.

As others have said, quite a difficult final approach, but it's fine if you take it steady. The site is 'long and thin' and has three rows of hard standing. It wasn't full when we were there (although pretty much all the hardstandings were taken) but there are also two rows of pitches on the grass, which gives the impression that, at full capacity, you would be fairly well rammed in, with very little space between the back of the vans, and vans parked with the front of one a few feet from the front of another. Unless visiting Dartmouth every journey tends to involve a trip up the road you came in on, which did make the place seem slightly cut off. The farm shop just up the road is good for most needs, and there are a couple of pubs within walking distance. The Church House Inn is dog friendly, but the Start Bay Inn isn't. We had a week here and it was OK, but probably not a site I'd return to, especially during peak periods

Lovely site

First stay here. Toilets, showers etc. well up to usual club standards. Very well kept and spacious site. We stayed on a grass pitch which was most pleasant. Can be a bit steep in places, so be ready to level up your vehicle. The road approaching is fine if you keep things steady and are sensible. The local bus drivers know the narrow roads well. Blackpool Sands beach on the way to Dartmouth is well worth a visit. Great for families. Can also walk to Start Bay from the site (15 minutes), with its pub and beech. Plenty of good National Trust houses nearby. The Winking Prawn near Salcombe is a fun place to eat.The farm shop next door to the site is very good, serves a good breakfast and has its own micro-brewery.

Great site

Really great site location fab location beach easily and safely 15 min walk great pubs and eating on door step good buses to local areas Only downside constant pet owners allowing dogs off leads near dog walking area where we were pitched and allowing dogs to mess on pitch we were on not nice even though everyone picked this up not good if you have small children around.

Small and Friendly

Lovely small site with very friendly, helpful wardens. Shower block always clean and the whole site was very well maintained. Walks to beach, pubs and bus stop all accessible. Very peaceful and good views of the countryside. Would definitely return.

Fantastic site

It was our 4th visit here. In 2008 and 2009 with our caravan and 2018 and this year with our campervan. Can’t recommend this site high enough. Always very friendly staff, beautiful quiet site. Very clean and a great location. Can not falter it for anything. Definitely coming back again.

A Fantastic Site

Had a part seasonal pitch from March to May. This was our first experience of a seasonal pitch and really enjoyed using our caravan most weekends. This is a fantastic site, very clean and well maintained. Wardens Tina & Chris were very welcoming, helpful and friendly. As we had a seasonal pitch they advised us of the best pitch on the site! The site is situated in a lovely area with Slapton Sands being a 20 minute walk. Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe are all worth a visit as well as having a boat trip on the River Dart. The road between Kingsbridge and the site is very narrow in places but this is the best road to take. Would certainly recommend this site, a fantastic well maintained and immaculate site.
