More Covid care please.

Nice site, well located. But on arrival There was no emphasis on Social Distancing. Just a piece of paper Handed to us without explanation. We felt uneasy on the site and had to leave a day early. Where was the stressed importance of keeping apart from each other? The site was full, there were Members there from all parts of the country and many people like us using the toilet block. Many Members showed no thought of social distancing. The site must have become a melting pot for spreading germs from all over the country. Please staff, suggestion for improvement, explain to newcomers the importance of social distancing For the benefit of all Members. We are excited about the reopening of our sites, but there were too many caravans and people on site for Covid safety. The Club has gone a long way with their Covid planning, but there were just too many people for the number of facilities. And too many who had no idea about social distancing. Lovely site, we love to visit again when quiet.

First time visit - nice site

A nice site with very friendly and helpful wardens. The site is on the A379 but I have driven on wider B roads. Access with a big unit could be problematic from Kingsbridge onwards as buses (and caravan leavers from site) will be encountered. There are two villages where a 20mph speed limit is in place - for very good reasons as they both have very narrow sections of road. Just drive to the speed limit and you'll probably be ok. I had one motorhome encounter in my (unhitched) VW T5 that was very tight - I was in the hedge on my left ..and there was no way of seeing what was coming at that point. COVID restrictions were generally well managed (this site uses the 'band on the board' management system) with 3 slots for the men's and ladies. Generally, 8-10 am use of facilities required a long wait but access later in the day for showers etc was OK. Site is well laid out but the 'gently sloping meadow' mention in the CAMC site description doesn't give the full picture.. you will need stacker blocks to secure your caravan in the RH field and possibly ramps to level your unit. The site is well located for the beach and Torcross is a nice place to be. I can also recommend the garden centre just up the road which has a Tap Room, good food shop and good food.

Not a dog walk!

Beautiful site, wardens a dream but I really wish CMC would stop calling a 6' space a dog walk!! We expect a site with "dog walk on site" as a facility to actually have one. One of our dogs is injured and unable to run on the pebbly Slapton Sands. We looked for a field/grassy area but found only a little patch just on the edge of the permissive path.... no secure area to run around at all. Very disappointed.

Lovely part of Devon

First visit to a C&MC club site and met our expectations. Friendly welcome (big opening day post-Covid-19 campsite closures). Good facilities. Easy walk or cycle down to Torcross / Slapton. Some road noise from our pitch.

Our 9th straight year!

We stayed on this wonderful site from the 4th to the 11th of July, which just so happened to coincide with the reopening of sites after lockdown. We really were in two minds whether to go, but we neednt have worried. The site looks the best it has in all the years (9 straight) that we have been coming here thanks to the hard work of the lovely wardens Gerry and Martin, ably assisted by their assistants. Yes, there are sensible restrictions around toilets and showers, but not overly so, and the ques are never longer than a few minutes. The ambience of the site is no different from previous years, albeit members rightly keep a little more distance. The approach from Kingsbridge has some narrow spots, but nothing to worry a confident tower, dont listen to all the scaremongers, it just takes a little more care and patience. The nearby farm shop has wonderful local produce, and the small brewery behind it is even better. Dont miss out on the wonderful pizzas. The beach at Torcross is a short 20min walk, is dog friendly, and it is just about impossible for you to not find your own quiet spot. Try the Fish and Chips from The Start Bay Inn. I cannot reccomend this site highly enough.

Sorry, long overdue review........Very helpful warden

Thankyou so much for the warden who took my partner to pick up his phone that he left on a wall in Dartmouth in July. He was very kind and helpful. We love this site/area and it makes it a much nicer experience when the wardens are not 'jobsworth'

Lovely place, fabulous staff, a great stay

Visited in October. Arrived after a traumatic journey to a lovely welcome by the staff. Easy check in, were made to feel really welcome. The site is clean, well looked after and a pleasure to visit. The wardens obviously take a pride in what they do, they are excellent. Well located for beaches and the coast some lovely bike rides in the vicinity. I really disagree with a previous reviewer, we had some of the most wonderful rides around on quiet roads. You can even go to Salcombe via the passenger ferry on a bike in an hour or so along pretty lanes. There are also several pubs and restaurants within easy biking distance too. Thoroughly recommend this place.

Start Bay

A quiet, peaceful site. Pretty and well maintained. Good facilities with temperature adjustment on the showers. Wardens extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful. The road from Kingsbridge is narrow in places but with care is drivable. We will be returning here.

We love this area but . . . .

Whilst we prefer quieter sites with more generously spaced pitches, we like returning to this site for we love the location. The site is well kept although we feel that the toilet block now needs updating. In the ladies' section, for example, shower water washes across two whilst in the block of four showers, the drain blocks with hair, etc - not very pleasant or hygienic.

Disappointing stay

We booked for a weekend, intending to do some birdwatching at the nearby nature reserve and took our tandem with us as the site advertises it is ideal for cycling. We were most disappointed when, on asking about cycle routes to be told immediately that the area was not suitable for cycling - as indeed it is not. The site details should be amended to show it is not suitable for cycling. We did not wish to drive anywhere as that defeated the object of a relaxing weekend so we set off on foot to visit the surrounding area. It is a reasonable walk to get to the reserve - not a problem, we are keen walkers - but it is largely uninteresting, along a road. The reserve was a disappointment - not the site's fault, of course - as there were very few birds and the reserve information suggested the variety of birds was only limited. The walk round the reserve was lovely, but it is not a circular walk. The sea walk is along a busy straight walk or on the beach, which has very soft sand so not easy to walk on. Slapton is a pleasant village, but a good long way on foot, and not for easy walkers. Once you have done that, there is really not a lot left to do on foot and you would need to drive to see anything else. We had intended to cycle... The site itself has insufficient showers - in male block, only four plus washing cubicles with curtains. The female block has 6 showers, 6 curtained cubicles and 6 toilets, not enough for the size of the site when busy. It was quite busy when we went, in September. We were not happy with the reception we received. The male staff member was very friendly on our arrival but passed us on to his female colleague, who dealt with us in a very abrupt, not-particularly-friendly or helpful way. On returning to reception to notify which site we were on, my husband was roundly and unpleasantly told off for having driven too fast. My husband is not a fast driver, he may have slightly exceeded the 5 mph limit but did not get above 2nd gear and caused no danger whatsoever. He was spoken to like a child and given a real ticking off. There are ways of speaking to someone if there is cause for complaint without being unpleasant and my husband was shocked by her manner. It adversely affected our whole stay and would deter us from booking this site again.
