We stayed over the first weekend of June. We arrived after a bit of a hair rising finale of the trip, coming down the local and aptly named "chute". The wardens were so friendly and helpful, with a great sense of humour. The site is beautifully maintained, there's a great dog walk and brilliant play area for children. Great views too.The only downside was the closure of part of the nearby main road, for roadworks, which led to the road outside the site being used as a rat run by the locals making it a risky business to walk to the local pub. Other campers told us they set out and turned back as it wasn't safe. That should all have been sorted now. Would stay there again if we return.
Pitch Perfect
What a gem. Beautiful setting. Immaculate in all areas with very well maintained grounds. Superb toilet block with plenty of showers and toilets. Most pitches are in small areas divided by hedges.
The wardens, Martin, Janet, Mark and Ruth work extremely hard to make this a welcoming experience in all senses. Frankly we do not know how, as such a small team, they manage to keep up this very high standard.
The children's play area is very well equipped to suit tots through to teens and it is the first time we have seen a CC site with a mini football area!
The site is well placed for visiting all parts of the island and we would recommend Osbourne House, The Needles and Ventnor Botanical Gardens. Also very close to the site a visit to Borthwood Copse is a must for an almost guaranteed sighting of red squirrels.
The local pub in Newchurch, The Pointers Inn, offers very good food and there is a large Morrisons supermarket down the road on the edge of Lake.
We were here for a week at the beginning of June and will certainly be coming back again as there is still so much to see and do.
Once again thank you to the great team of wardens.
Still the benchmark !
Stayed here three years ago and wrote that this site set the standard against which all others should be judged. This still applies. Just come back from 10 nights there with a motorhome. The roads across the island were suffering massive roadworks and diversions. Add to that it was festival time around Newport, the small roads and the density of traffic there anyway, we elected to purchase 7 day tickets for the bus. The bus service is fantastic across the Isle of Wight. £24 lets you take as many buses as you like. No jams, no parking and no stress. For those wanting to drive motorhomes, the site has compiled a list of places to park them and the prices.
The nearest bus stop is outside the gate (Tues and Fri only) or a brisk 10 minute walk away for the half hourly service. The meals at the Pointer Inn nearby are so good we had to go twice - not the same day though!. There are only two points I wonder about with regard to the site - the first is why there is 'caution hot water' stickers in the washing up / prep area when the water is so lukewarm. Strange because the showers are plenty hot enough. The second is what is 'bin abuse'? The sign in the prep area refers to the bin being removed due to 'bin abuse'. Is this some form of mental cruelty to bins? Violence to refuse receptacles? or perhaps even a darker side of abuse that shouldn't be discussed here? Whatever the reason, it is a touch inconvenient if you want to throw veg trimmings for example.
At the time we were there it was all you would expect from a 5 star adult only site.

A real gem
Stayed here for 6 nights, late May bank holiday week 2015. We hadn't been to IoW for many years, and have never taken the 'van over. Booked ferry and site through the Club - odd to deal with the Overseas Travel Service for what is a quintessentially British place to visit!
Southland is a glorious site; a real gem of a Club site with the usual immaculate facilities, brilliant team of wardens who maintain the site to a fantastic standard, quiet and peaceful atmosphere, and with good facilities for kids and dog owners. Despite this being half term week, the site wasn't even a third full. There is a separate field of hard standing pitches, which was full over the weekend but cleared out after the bank holiday. We chose a grass pitch based on the good weather forecast, and were not disappointed. The main road closure proved a real pain all week for getting out and about but this is scheduled to reopen by the main summer season. Across the island, road surfaces are pretty poor, so tow with care!
It can be pretty tough to get a pitch during a main holiday week on the Club's flagship sites, so if you can take the cost and moderate hassle of the ferry trip, Southland is a great option and the Island is delightful, certainly when the weather is on your side.
Quite week
My family and I stayed for a week over the bank holiday, the site is very clean and well run shower block kept in perfect condition, very good play area for kids including a small football pitch.
The island is a very pleasant place to view and explore but we found that we were struggling to find things to do for the kids we visited all the main attractions, including both robin hill and black gang chine to which we found very disappointing considering the ticket price( only good thing is that once you have purchased your ticket you can go back any time over the period of your stay so we did as there was not much else to do for the kids). I would say keep the isle of white just for short weekend trips you can see the whole place in three days won't be going back for a long time but at least we have now ticked it of our places to stay.
Fab Site
We stayed here at the beginning of May and had a great time, the layout, cleanliness and wardens are all spot on
Superb Site
Have just returned from a glorious week on this perfect site. As others before me have stated the site exceeds all expectations for a perfect holiday, wardens, cleanliness and layout couldn't be faulted.
Ideally located for sightseeing and close to the best beaches on the island, which out of season were nearly deserted.
Only drawback was the roadworks going on in many places and a road closure which created a long diversion from east to west. Some fellow members spoke of 2.5hr journey from ferry, so do what we did and speak to the very helpful wardens before you leave home and they will give precise directions and reduce the travel time to under 1 hour.
The best site we have ever used
This epitomises what the Caravan Club is about. A top quality site, maintained to the highest standard and extremely pleasant and helpful wardens. First class, top notch.
Simply Brilliant!
This is quite simply one of the best, if not the best, site on the network. Brilliant wardens, smiling, happy, courteous....., fantastic facilities, superb children's play area, manicured landscaping....simply outstanding!
Many people seem put off by the 'trip from the mainland', realistically it's £100 return with the caravan via Red Funnel and with the £2 a night offer, no more expensive than any site across the country. The ferry crossing adds to the excitement of the holiday. And....the weather when it's good is amazing! Hottest place in the UK! We simply cannot rate this place highly enough. If you've never been, book it and try it, you will not be disappointed!!!
Immaculate site!
Southlands is a well equipped and immaculate site. There is barely a blade of grass out of place. Everything is clean, neat and tidy and the facilities are all in excellent working order. How this is achieved is difficult to fathom as there is no evidence of hectic maintenance! In fact other than at check-in and check-out, I don't recall seeing the wardens during my five night stay.
The grass pitch that I pitched on was the most level and flattest that I have ever encountered. Numerous tall hedges surround the grass pitches which give protection from the wind as it would otherwise be quite breezy. The hedges do however obscure the pleasant views over the surrounding countryside. You could elect to have one of the hard standing pitchs which are less protected by hedges and therefore have better views but are more exposed. I guess you can choose to be blown away by the view or by the wind.
The Pointer Inn in the local village is very highly recommended and we were looking forward to eating there on our last evening. However when we rang to request a reservation that afternoon we were told that all tables were taken. So that's a lesson for us all; get your reservation made early! There are plenty of adequate eating places nearby in Shanklin and Sandown and in nearby villages but we didn't find anything particularly worthy of recommendation or warning to avoid. The fish and chip shop in Lake (about 2 miles away) is clean and cooks your food freshly to order and is a reasonable and convenient takeaway.
