Great site

This was our second visit this year as in months and again not disappointed but as the cost of crossing for a four night stay is still expensive would be good if there was the option of a seven and a ten night ferry offer as well. Very friendly staff and immaculate grounds and toilet block... I see someone commented that there are no facilities once the toilet block is closed for cleaning, well the disabled toilet is then opened at that time. We will be back.

Lovely site

Loved the site and its location. The stewards were always there and cheerfull and helpful. The facilities were spotless and very good. Could do with a pedestrian exit in the lane leading to the bus stop at Amazon world. The only down side was too many dogs, they were noisy at time particularly the small ones and not everyone used the dog walk. Not everyone loves dogs and it would be nice to have some areas dog free. But would go again.

Very Nice!

Really lovely site, friendly wardens, extremely well maintained area - the team were out every single day of our 10 night stay performing ground maintenance and it truly paid off!  Great play area for the kids and lovely area for ball games and a wonderful meadow walk with lovely views all attached to the site.  Just a few points, we were a little disappointed that the entire toilet block, dishwashing area and laundry was closed for cleaning every day between 10.30 - 12.30 (The children's room closed at 12) as we thought (as did others) that this was too early to provide a really leisurely break and too long to close the entire area leaving not a single toilet open. We felt that it would be better to close the area at mid-afternoon when most people have showered, but maybe they had their reasons for this.  Also some ladies were extremely inconsiderate about leaving lots of hair around the sinks after their wash - even though there was a sign up asking people to remove it it was quite extraordinary and rather revolting! It is not hard to wipe up your own hair if you see it left there people!!  Top tip: If you like peace and quiet do not opt for a pitch backing onto the play area as this was well used every night when we were there out of high season until night fall and large groups of children tended to club together and can be heard screaming and laughing until quite late - not good if you wish to read quietly or put very young ones to bed early - but then the wardens did warn people of this and there is an excellent choice of different pitches for different individuals preferences.

An exellant stay

We have stayed for twelve nights from the 28th June, this being our third visit to this site. As usual the facilities and the site in general are of the highest standard on the network. Excellent location and very easy to travel around the island by bus. We purchased two weekly tickets which for £24 each represented very good value for money. The site wardens work extremely hard and are certainly a credit to the club. We would like to say a big thank you to them for accommodating us when we encountered a breakdown with our car. Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they helped to take some of the stress away as we were due to travel back the day before. The one and only negative comment we would make is that there were far too many dogs on site. Once again, thank you very much to the wardens, and to the caravan club.

Highly manicured

If you like your sites pristine and organised, this is for you. Bit too perfect for us, felt a bit like staying on a caravan sales site. Also, there were a hell of a lot of dogs, more than I've ever seen on any other site, and try and stay away from trees, the rooks will drive you nuts. Fighting Cocks pub nearby is excellent but don't try walking there, lethal. Finally, take great care when booking your ferry, there aren't many places where you can hang around on the I of W and campsite rules regarding arrival and departure are rigorously applied. Should you find yourself with an hour or so to kill off site waiting for your ferry, there is a large space to one side of the Fighting Cocks that makes a good place to lay over.

One of the best

We stayed over the first weekend of June. We arrived after a bit of a hair rising finale of the trip, coming down the local and aptly named "chute". The wardens were so friendly and helpful, with a great sense of humour. The site is beautifully maintained, there's a great dog walk and brilliant play area for children. Great views too.The only downside was the closure of part of the nearby main road, for roadworks, which led to the road outside the site being used as a rat run by the locals making it a risky business to walk to the local pub. Other campers told us they set out and turned back as it wasn't safe. That should all have been sorted now. Would stay there again if we return.

Pitch Perfect

What a gem.  Beautiful setting.  Immaculate in all areas with very well maintained grounds.  Superb toilet block with plenty of showers and toilets.  Most pitches are in small areas divided by hedges. The wardens, Martin, Janet, Mark and Ruth work extremely hard to make this a welcoming experience in all senses.  Frankly we do not know how, as such a small team, they manage to keep up this very high standard. The children's play area is very well equipped to suit tots through to teens and it is the first time we have seen a CC site with a mini football area! The site is well placed for visiting all parts of the island and we would recommend Osbourne House, The Needles and Ventnor Botanical Gardens.  Also very close to the site a visit to Borthwood Copse is a must for an almost guaranteed sighting of red squirrels. The local pub in Newchurch, The Pointers Inn, offers very good food and there is a large Morrisons supermarket down the road on the edge of Lake. We were here for a week at the beginning of June and will certainly be coming back again as there is still so much to see and do. Once again thank you to the great team of wardens.

Still the benchmark !

Stayed here three years ago and wrote that this site set the standard against which all others should be judged. This still applies. Just come back from 10 nights there with a motorhome. The roads across the island were suffering massive roadworks and diversions. Add to that it was festival time around Newport, the small roads and the density of traffic there anyway, we elected to purchase 7 day tickets for the bus. The bus service is fantastic across the Isle of Wight. £24 lets you take as many buses as you like. No jams, no parking and no stress. For those wanting to drive motorhomes, the site has compiled a list of places to park them and the prices. The nearest bus stop is outside the gate (Tues and Fri only) or a brisk 10 minute walk away for the half hourly service. The meals at the Pointer Inn nearby are so good we had to go twice - not the same day though!. There are only two points I wonder about with regard to the site - the first is why there is 'caution hot water' stickers in the washing up / prep area when the water is so lukewarm. Strange because the showers are plenty hot enough. The second is what is 'bin abuse'? The sign in the prep area refers to the bin being removed due to 'bin abuse'. Is this some form of mental cruelty to bins? Violence to refuse receptacles? or perhaps even a darker side of abuse that shouldn't be discussed here? Whatever the reason, it is a touch inconvenient if you want to throw veg trimmings for example. At the time we were there it was all you would expect from a 5 star adult only site.

A real gem

Stayed here for 6 nights, late May bank holiday week 2015. We hadn't been to IoW for many years, and have never taken the 'van over. Booked ferry and site through the Club - odd to deal with the Overseas Travel Service for what is a quintessentially British place to visit! Southland is a glorious site; a real gem of a Club site with the usual immaculate facilities, brilliant team of wardens who maintain the site to a fantastic standard, quiet and peaceful atmosphere, and with good facilities for kids and dog owners. Despite this being half term week, the site wasn't even a third full. There is a separate field of hard standing pitches, which was full over the weekend but cleared out after the bank holiday. We chose a grass pitch based on the good weather forecast, and were not disappointed. The main road closure proved a real pain all week for getting out and about but this is scheduled to reopen by the main summer season. Across the island, road surfaces are pretty poor, so tow with care! It can be pretty tough to get a pitch during a main holiday week on the Club's flagship sites, so if you can take the cost and moderate hassle of the ferry trip, Southland is a great option and the Island is delightful, certainly when the weather is on your side.
