Excellent site

Very clean, tidy and well run site with first class clean facilities. May be a few more hard standings could be provided. I had a fun time trying to peg my awning through the gravel in to what seemed like concrete.

Southland a superb site

Just spent 10 nights at Southland, excellent site, beautifully looked after by the warden team. Could do with with more hardstandings as some grass pitches looked quite distressed. Easily the best site on the Isle of Wight.

Top site , more hardstandings?

This is our third trip since this site was taken over by the club approximately 7 years ago. Many improvements have taken place over the years with excellent facilities, only one toilet block which is very well kept by the wardens however this could be a bit crowded though when the site is full. It would be nice to have some more hardstandings placed around the site as the current block quickly gets taken particularly early and late season when the grass either through rain or dew is wet. For those wishing to use the Islands excellent bus service you need to walk down the lane next to the site to Amazon World where you can get a bus into Newport or onto Ryde in the opposite direction. The bus stop immediately outside the site has a much less frequent service so it is best to check the timetable. One important point , I checked Wightlinks website and the best price I could get for our camper van was £118 return , on contacting the clubs travel service by booking the site and ferry through them the ferry price was just over £62 return !! And that was for the same times and days that I checked for on the ferry companies website , some saving !

Successful stay

Stayed at Southland beg. of Sept. Attracted by cheap sites' offer. Found it to be excellent and quiet - with first class facilities. Plenty of choice of grass pitches and seemed to be well positioned on the island. Our only trouble was the prevalence of 6'6" warning signs for access to many roads. Here the Snooper helped enormously but unfortunately often had to take us 5 (!) sides of a triangle to get to our destinations. (not the fault of the campsite though!) Well-stocked shop run by most helpful wardens who were a delight to deal with. A most successful 4 night stay coupled with 2 'millpond' crossings with Wightlink.

Could do better

Very happy with site, facilities and pitch.  HOWEVER, very, very unhappy with noise generated by the staff when cutting grass, hedges and general maintenance, from both machinery and the tractor keep on going by our pitch.  The noise of the tractor going off in the distance but then coming back and then going, then coming back. We expect peace and quiete on holiday, but appreciate that maintenance has to go on.  This should be restricted to the mornings only and not to be carried on all day and every day of our four night stay.  We have not experienced this on any other Caravan Club camp site.

Barking Dogs

We stayed here for two weeks in July, we could have had a hard standing pitch, but that side of the site was very open and there is quite a bit of wind on the island so opted for a grass pitch, unfortunately this pitch backed on to the holiday bungalow that Is hired out, there was a very noisy family there during our stay there who obviously thought they were the only people there!! One shower block, but that was not a problem, never had to wait for showers and they were always spotlessly clean. There were a lot of children on the site especially the second week as it was the start of the school holidays, they were charging around on bikes, riding the wrong way round the site ignoring signs saying for cycles to use the one way system! My major complaint was the dogs barking, I had read a lot of complaints about this before we went and hoped it would be ok when we got there wrong.... Most mornings we were woken by dogs barking, someone round the corner who looked like had been pitched there quite awhile had 3 dogs that barked on and off all day, this pitch was quite near wardens own acomadation and I know they must have heard the barking, I noticed they had dogs as well, so I wonder if dog owners cannot hear dog barking??? Also saw dog owners letting their dogs foul on caravan pitches while out walking their dogs, other people's pitches obviously not their own!!! All in all a good site spoilt by Dog Owners ??

Brilliant

This site is a credit to The Caravan Club. Its wardens are excellent, friendly, informative and so welcoming. Its a brilliant site for walking and a 20minute walk through to the village gives you access to a cyclepath with lots of footpaths that go off in all directions. We will be back very soon.

excellent site

This site is amazing. Considering it's run and maintained by 4 staff. My son is disabled and the staff were extremely helpful during our stay.  It was obvious how busy the staff were (as always running around the place), but always made a point of stopping and chatting with the children on site.  Also not afraid of challenging children if doing something wrong (Great to see, and yes my kids were pulled up). You can walk into the toilet/shower block anytime of day/night and it's always spotlessly clean. Grounds always kept tidy and grass and hedges cut back nicely.  The staff really treated the place like it's there own backyard and maintained to the highest standards. For kids it's ideal.  The playground is well equipped and safe.  Small football pitch and a field that's got tall grass with paths running through it.  Kids loved playing war and hide and seek down. And it's far enough away not to disturb anyone. Love there's a separate area to walk and toilet your dog's (I have 2) Location wise, it's in an ideal spot.  You have to drive, but there's a lot to do on your doorstep... Be warned....  Garlic farm close by.  Free sample room = stinking caravan that night lol. Thank you Southlands for a great holiday.  I'll be back next year

Lovely site but.........

Southland is a superbly run site with excellent facilities, large pitches set in well maintained grounds. The wardens were friendly, helpful, and efficient. We stopped there for a week in a motorhome during peak season. The shower and toilet block was so good it was a pleasure using them and my wife and I both looked forward to our morning shower. The problem for us was we wanted to leave the motorhome on site and use the local bus service to tour the island. There is a bus stop right outside but the service bus only runs twice a week, there is an open top tour bus called the breezer which runs regularly which will take you around the eastern downs(£10 adults with concessions paying £5).If you want to make full use of a concessionary bus pas then it is necessary to get to Newport which is the hub where you can get a service bus to anywhere on the island. The nearest bus stop to get directly to Newport is near Amazon world which is nearly a mile away down some very narrow roads. In hindsight I should have hired a car for the week which would have made it much easier to tour the Isle of Wight,a really lovely place.A recommended trip is to Alum bay and the needles where you can get the cable car to the beach and then a boat trip around the needles with commentary.I couldn't fault the site it was beautifully maintained and spotlessly clean,a real credit to the wardens. My only complaint is with a minority of the clientele using the site.It was the first week of the summer holidays so lots of kids on site.I love well behaved kids but some were unsupervised and leaving a mess in the toilet block, also careering around the site on bikes,I saw one young lad almost get knocked off his bike by a chap in a 4 wheel drive who would have been totally blameless.Although this is a Caravan Club site non members are admitted.I think that some of them are unaware of the site rules so standards will be lower during the school holidays.I saw some toilets left in a disgusting state, there is no excuse for this as every cubicle has a brush. To conclude,I would recommend this site despite my adverse comments above. The wardens do a great job but can't be expected to watch unsupervised kids all the time.It is essential to have a car to tour the island from Southland, some of the roads are very narrow and during July/August are busy with holidaymakers in cars some of whom don't slow down for walkers or cyclists.
