Short break on the Island
We arrived to bright sunshine after a perfect crossing with Wightlink Lymington to Yarmouth. The driving time was only around 1/2 hour so we arrived around 11:25 and waited for reception to open at 12:00 . The hard standing pitches were reserved for motor homes as the grass ones had been rather wet from the preceding days rain . A lot of the grass pitches were partitioned off due to erosion they had been re seeded which the local pidgeons loved. The staff were on the whole friendly and helpful and the toilet and shower block spotless . The dog walk was handy for morning and evening walks for our dog. The site is on the eastern end of the Island which tends to be more built up than the western end. Close by are the Garlic farm god but rather pricey and the house of Chilli which has some interesting products for any chili lover . There are few farm shops reasonably close to site selling local produce. Places we visited in our 4 days including the Garlic farm and house of chilli were the old windmill at Bembridge (NT) ,the steam railway , Ventnor town, Godshill , Needles old battery (NT) Sandown Ryde, Carisbrooke castle and the beech along the Military road which allows dogs . Also the car park above Blackgang is good to walk over to the cliffs and enjoy the views. Didn't try the pubs so cannot comment . Southlands is a great site in a good location. We pitched in the grass area away from the hedge and there was some traffic noise from the side road at night but not to excessive . We realy enjoyed our stay on the Island and intend to return soon to Southlands.
Reserving Pitches
I agree with TheDerbyshireArtist The site is lovely and well looked after. However when we arrived we were told there were not any hard standings available however we managed to find one that backed on to the service point. The pitch was ok but we didn't like it because our door was facing the door of adjacent caravan. There were two or three pitches that had pitch in use on them we were told these were for large camper vans that were arriving on a late ferry. This was not the case at 8.30 a small caravan arrived and was allocated one of the pitches. The others remained empty until next morning a caravan moved from a service pitch. This didn't seem fair as we would have been happier on one of these pitches

Lovely week
First time here and it's what others have said its a lovely site.Only one shower and toilet block but never had to wait, they are kept very clean.I do have to say one thing that we didn't like which is the fact that pitches are reserved.Even before we vacated our pitch it had in place a [ this pitch is taken ]sign put up the day before.its the first time we'd encountered pre booking pitches with the caravan club and we don't think it's right .we all pay the same membership so why is this site allowed to do this?
LOVELY BREAK
Our first visit to Southlands and we will be back. Had a smashing time plenty to do and see.
Southlands site
Maintained beautifully with extremely helpful staff. All had a ready smile. Thanks to you all
welcoming retreat
We have just completed our second visit to this beautiful site and like our first visit a couple of years ago the site and facilities were very well kept by the ever helpful wardens who even in the heavy rain we had were out and about making sure everything was OK for all on site would not hesitate to recommend this site to anybody or the helpful and friendly wardens

Could be better
It's possible that it was bad timing but the site pitches were in very poor condition, churned up by motor homes that had trouble moving on the soft wet grass, this made the site unattractive.
There are not enough hard standing pitches for today's caravaners who seem to be moving to motorhomes.
A site of this size needs more than one toilet block.
Having said that the IOW is a great location and the Whitelink Ferry service is very good, we used the Lymington Yarmouth route and got on earlier ferry's than booked both ways, very accommodating.
A disappointment
We had a dissapointing stay at Southlands. Whilst the toilet block was clean and adequate there should be another block for the hardstanding area. It should also not be necessary to close both the mens & ladies blocks at the same time for 2 hours, with only one disabled toilet as an alternative. During our stay there was a lot of heavy rain and this caused some very overused pitches to become very muddy. These hard worn pitches ought to be rotated to enable them to revive the grass.
Unfortunately two of the staff were less than helpful.
