West Ayton club site

Just returned from a week at West Ayton, our second visit to the site. It is a very peaceful spot with play areas and a field for children. The wardens are very good and helpful. The facilities are ok but starting to look a bit jaded and could do with a refresh. The location is a bit isolated with a steepish walk into the village which boasts one pub serving food. There are good walks in the area along the Forge Valley. If visiting near bye Scarbor'o use the Park and ride scheme, also the same applies to Whitby. The Downe Arms pub is a couple of miles down the road towards Pickering and serves good food, It is also dog friendly. If you go to Whitby try the Humble Pie cafe, just to the right over the bridge, traditional pie and peas with a vintage theme.

A good site for families, couples and dogs - all ages. Shame about the newspapers.

We really like this site even though parts of it are getting "tired". The comments about the newspaper charges are interesting, especially the club's response. We agree entirely with the member who entered the review on 23 April. 10p is more than enough, as newsagents will give discounts for regular, large orders. The club failed to check what commission the wardens receive in vouchers etc.that more than cover the fuel costs.

Superb site

We haven't visited this site for 6 years and am so pleased we visited again. Pitches were much improved and also the dog walk has been made larger. We had such a wonderful 11 day stay over Easter. The showers were very hot and powerful although they are of the old style - we have been very spoiled by the newer blocks on some sites where the cubicles are much larger and have no curtain to stick to you when you're wet! I can understand the previous review about awning pitches being used by some who don't use an awning but this problem isn't specific to this site in particular. We booked our pitch in December so we were able to get the pitch type we wanted We will definitely visit again - its a lovely part of the world and the site is excellent.

Fantastic

Fantastic. We (2 adults 2 children) have just had 4 nights here and it was lovely. Nice quiet site, great location, lovely wardens. Scarborough sea front & Peasholm Park just a 10 min drive. Robin Hoods Bay 30 mins drive. Showers and toilets were very clean and tidy. 2 play areas (one for older children and one for younger children) also a games room with 2 pool tables and a table tennis table. Nice dog walking area. We will definitely be returning to this wonderful site.

Excellent site in a lovely location

We have visited this site many times and have always enjoyed the tranquility and peaceful setting. It is very well placed for both the coast and the Yorkshire Moors. Showers and toilets were always clean, as I would expect on any Caravan Club site and the wardens were very courteous. We were, however, disappointed to find the need to charge 20p to supply a daily newspaper (which could be bought from the Spar shop in the village). It's always nice when on holiday to be able to collect one from the office and given the number of people on site I'm sure the old charge of 10p would more than cover the cost.

Comment from the Club:

Many thanks for your review and we are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at the site. We just wanted to clear up any confusion regarding the charge for newspapers. Unfortunately the local spar do not supply the site with newspapers and as such the site staff have to drive to the next village early each morning which is a 6 mile round trip. The charge of 20p doesn’t cover the cost of this but it is a service the wardens on site want to be able to offer members. I hope this helps explain why the charge of 20p applies and we hope you return to the site again soon.

Pleasant site But

Very clean site, but we wanted a pitch with an awning, only ones we could book were without, In the 5 days we stayed as I walked from the shower block to pitch 56 there were 8 pitches that were for awnings and none were put up which I think was very selfish. People don't realised that the pitches are all the same size. Maybe the caravan club should charge extra for awnings and then they would not have this problem. Won't stay there again.

Easter break

Booked this site very early (Dec 2016) as it gets booked up quickly and we can see why, arrived on site at 12.30 and was greeted by friendly and helpful staff, having found my little piece of land for the weekend, I hooked up with no problem near one of the two toilet blocks on site, which were very clean & tidy, the showers were hot. The site is set on three levels and being on the lower level it is a nice gentle walk to the main office and dog walk, the village is a good 10 min walk, pub in village serves good beer. Will be booking this site again.

Pre-Easter Break

Not our first visit to West Ayton and won't be the last. We had a pre-Easter break with grandchildren and left the site on Good Friday. It actually took us a while to leave as early new-comers were being allowed on site before the allotted time to avoid queues outside the site. It was a wise move by the wardens and handled by them extremely well. Staying at West Ayton is usually a good experience and this was no exception. The site is very well maintained and the wardens perform extremely well. There is enough to keep grandchildren happy with the usual play equipment and a huge playing field. If there is a downside it has to be the two toilet blocks which now appear comparatively cramped and very tired and in need of some new investment, although the actual showers were hot and powerful. The bus stops and a decent pub are a short walk away and we were able to see the sunshine in Scarborough and a couple of railway engines in Pickering and a pub evening meal as a treat. A wonderful time was had by all

It was Ok

Stayed here for two nights last week, one of the wardens thinks he has a built in personal speedometer as he stopped me to tell me there are lots of kids about and it is 5 mile per hour, i had my grandson with me and NEVER go above 5 miles per hour on CC sites, however there were loads of other owners going well over during our stay, i am sure the speed of the wardens on the tractors was more than 5 MPH. When we arrived we asked if there were any Bus time tables available and were directed to the information shed, as it turned out these time tables were over 6 months out of date which led to a 1.5 hour wait at the bus shelter, not great for MH owners who rely on these facilities. The toilets in the male block were over flowing which I have never witnessed before, perhaps the wardens should do more checking of the cleanliness of the toilets rather than trying to act as speedometers??
