This is the second time we’ve stopped here and it won’t be the last, nice well kept site, friendly welcome from the wardens (female) but the male wardens could smile a bit more and when you say morning to them it would be nice of them to reciprocate with the same.
Great site
First time at this site and loved it friendly wardens immaculately clean shower and toilet blocks great dog walk and activity field for kids / table tennis and pool games room . Great walk into village about 5 minutes local pub very friendly and also dog friendly good food excellent beer garden . Spar supermarket just over the bridge in east ayton about 2 minutes. Bus route to Scarborough or Pickering very good and frequent
fabulous family and dog friendly site
Loved this site. Location easy to get to, although large site was peaceful in June even at a weekend. Very spacious. Fabulous play area for children with loads of space (we always look these days with grandchildren in mind). Dog walk and walks wonderful. The view from the field beyond the dog walk was absolutely amazing over the wolds and could even see white cliffs. Lovely walks in the area too.
The only disappointment which was nothing to do with the site was our trip on North Yorkshire Railway. We live in Shropshire near Severn Valley Railway which is a very pretty ride along the river Severn. We expected a similar pretty view on the North Yorkshire Railway but it runs in steep sided valleys for the most part so not the view we expected. Quite expensive too we thought.
Site FABULOUS - in my mind one of the best in the country for facilities, layout etc.
(Just one thing there isn't a sign for the site coming from the west Pickering site so just watch out if you are coming that way as you have to turn sharply at you arrive in West Ayton on the left)

Seaside Weekend Stay
Had a few days at this site our first visit to Scarborough for many years and had a nice Armed Forces Day that included a display on the South beach area by the fantastic RAF Red Arrows. Getting into town on the bus from close to the site and not all club sites are close to bus stops which is a shame. Used the pub opposite the bus stop the Ye Olde Forge Valley Inn on the way back and must agree with a fellow member who pointed out the debit card charge of 50p is not one you come across very often and I did not think was good by the pub as most meals inc drinks will be in excess of £20 so come on landlord play the game. Read in the info room about a couple who a few days before out visit had seven yes 7 dogs with them,,, a bit over the top don't you think.
Generally good, definitely not 5 stars
We have been going to this site for several years as we like the location. It;s a shame that so many grass pitches have been lost over the years as we prefer them. The dog walk has been much improved by extending it. I know the site has to be maintained but I wish wardens would refrain from cutting grass and hedges at weekends. Also, why does the CC have to buy such incredibly noisy machinery? The little tractors and the petrol hedge cutters you use are the noisiest I've come across. Many commercial sites use much quieter machines. I also don't understand why CC sites insist on closing shower blocks in the mornings. The most likely time people want to use them is in the morning, especially if you are vacating the site that day and it's a pain when the shower blocks are close. Why can't the cleaning be done between 12 and 1pm?
The major issue we have however is one which is now common place on all CC sites and which is not being taken seriously by the club- that is excessive speed. solo cars, cars towing caravans and motorhomes were routinely exceeding the 5mph limit, quite a few by a considerable margin. Many of the speeders are by no means young drivers. Will it take someone to be seriously injured or even killed before the club takes this increasing problem seriously?
It has to be said that the wardens themselves were routinely driving their tractors at more than 5mph and even worse were frequently seen driving the wrong way on the one way section close to our pitch!!
I don't suggest speed cameras on sites, however electronic speed display boards are not expensive and make it very easy for everyone to see how fast someone is driving. This would also make it easier to report speeders. These people are behaving dangerously and it's high time this issue was addressed. I saw a warden pacing the distance between 2 caravans, which were not too close together, yet speeders are left to carry on.
Finally, and not the fault of the club, the Old Forge Valley Inn in the village charge a 50p surcharge for DEBIT card payments!!. I complained about this to them as we have never been charged for using a debit card at any other pub. This is pure profiteering and we would never use this pub again.
Noisy
Just spent a week here and although it is a beautiful area and site we were very disappointed at the noise made by site maintenance. Every time we wanted to sit outside our caravan and relax there was some loud mower or strimmer. Surely these necessary tasks could be kept to a minimum for some of the day. Also on arrival the warden gave us strict instructions on how to pitch (and rightly so for safety) so we pitched exactly as informed (as always). A couple of days later a caravan pitched opposite us ignoring all the rules. Wardens kept walking past and ignoring so we decided to go to reception and report them. A warden did come and speak to them but they was never told to pitch correctly (we was informed rules were very strict due to safety) but they obviously didn't police these rules as we were informed they would. They should have been made to move as we were told we would if we pitched incorrectly. Also finally we were told that the speed limit was a strict 5mph but not many kept to this neither. Been going to this site for a few years now and this was the worst week we have had there!
One of the best dog walk areas.
We visited whilst on tour of the east coast. A big site with a good range of pitches spread across a range of areas. Good tree cover at the edges of the site and one of the best sites for dog walking. Great shower and toilet facilities as expected up to club standards. Helpful and friendly wardens.
Excellent site !
Well run site with great facilities. Brilliant for access to all the best places to visit. Yes the toilet blocks are dated but were clean and showers were hot and powerful.
Nothing was too much trouble for the wardens, a credit to the club.
Visit the Forge pub in the village, a 10 minute walk. Great food, fantastic value and super dog friendly too.
We will be back!
Return visit after 4 years... maybe not again.
Hello
Having spent the last week at West Ayton after not being there for about four years we was suprised how tired the wc and shower block was.
The showers on the top level are in desperate need of attention. the toilet blocks were always cleanand the wardens I guess do the best they can to keep them as one would expect, I have to say also I feel sorry for the wardens having to clean up some of the mess left from people who find it hard to use a wc correctly.
I also find it very disturbing that adults are taking their children in the male shower blocks for their daily shower and using all three showers at once, in addition female children are also being taken in the male showers by there fathers which I do object to.
Our pitch was just along from the upper wc block. it was ok, however the week was slighlty spoilt by a couple who appeared to have family stopping over at the end of the week who arrived on site with a Builders Site Radio which we had the joy of listening to one evening into the early hours ! not to mention their dogs wandering around like everyone wants to fuss them !
It may seem a moan this review, and I dont want it to detract anyone from further visits, the two ther points I want to mention is despite the very nice lady warden explaining on our arrival the strict 5mph rule many thought the roads where a great opportunity to try the speed of their cars out. but hey ho I suppose until another members get injured or killed that will continue.
Finally, I was suprised on how unkept the grass was, many pitches had grass in desperate need of a cut, but I guess that will get done eventually.
one last point is the pub at the end of the road opposite the lane. brilliant food at great prices.
Enjoy your 2017 holidays !
Bank holiday weekend away
This was our second visit to West Ayton and won't be our last.
Although it was a busy weekend, it didn't feel too crowded and continued to have a peaceful and relaxed feel about it.
Unfortunately there was a group of really drunken rowdy people on site being particularly noisy, spoiling the tranquility for other people. Thank goodness my pitch was nowhere near them. Someone must have complained and I saw the warden on his return, then it all quietened down.
Well done!
The wardens are all very friendly and work hard to keep the site beautifully presented.
