Lovely but its looks tired

I have used this site a few times now as a base to visit family in Whitley Bay. The location near St Mary's Island and the view is lovely. The site is on a steep hill so most pitches needs blocks under the steadies. Some hard standing pitches are very small, some larger. The shower block is at the top of the site so for OAPs its quite a trudge. The shower block and the 3 shower cubicals for men are small, tired decor, dated. The toilet windows are on the same wall as the fresh water tap, and grey waste drain. Its not very nice when the windows are open which is most of the day.

For caravanners at the bottom of the hill there is no service points whatsoeve except dustbins for recycle rubbish. Surely the caravan club could afford to put in a stand pipe for fresh water at least. I have watched countless old folk lugging their grey waste or toilet cassetes up the steep hill to the shower block, what a struggle. Again I would have thought the club would have some onus of responsibility under the health and safety act to exercise a Duty of Care to their club nembers as the service points or lack of them leaves a lot to be desired. In a nut shell the site should be shut for the 2017 season and rebuilt, replanned and refurbished. The entrance is only wide enough for one vehicle and outfit to pass through, consequently the arrivals congest the small road blocking residents riveways and access. Any club members in cars wanting to come in or go out has to wait until the wardens have checked in the new arrivals. Its all very Fred Carno. The area is nice for coastal walks, brilliant chippy in seaton sluice, the serving are huge. The resort is quite with little for families to do especially on rainey days. Outside the area there are places of interest to visit.

So get your finger out Caravan Club and revamp this site urgently.  Would I use this site again, not if there was a another touring park nearby.

beautiful views

what a lovely site, I could have looked out at the island and the views forever. Great walks along the beach and the cliffs and WBay much nicer than I remembered. Friendly staff. I agree with the reviewer who commented on the same arrival and departure times. This is not helpful given the very limited access and the steepness of the site. Will definitely be back, still lots to do and see in the area.

Great site

We enjoyed our 4 nights at this great site. Less formal than some CC sites which helps visitors make the most of the fantastic sea views. I hope it is not club members dogs but lot of dog mess along the coastal path near the site. We found the facilities always clean during our stay and the staff very helpful.

A bit disappointed

This was the third time we'd stayed at Old Hartley as very convenient for visiting family in Newcastle. The site seems to have become much more busy with motor homes and therefore a lot more coming and going. The most disturbing is the fact that while we were there, some member/s left the facilities in such a terrible state that cleaning had to be undertaken before use. I do feel sorry for the wardens as they always left the facilities well cleaned.

Could do better?

This potentially splendid site is unfortunately spoiled by: 1. Having departure and arrival times both set at 12 noon. This results in outgoing and incoming vehicles trying to use the same very limited space at the entrance. Why not make the deadline for departures 11.00, keeping arrivals from 12 noon? The current arrangement seems to put the wardens under undue pressure, leading to some irritation if someone arrives a little early and simply wants to wait with nowhere to go. An unfortunate start. 2. Although willing and helpful, the wardens did not seem to be that well organised. 3. Some pitches unduly close to each other.

5 STAR SITE, 5 STAR WARDENS

It's really difficult to find fault with this site.  Great location with stunning views and the Caravan Club team add to the whole experience by being friendly and helpful.  The shower block, etc are tip-top too. Heavily sloped so do take levelling blocks but the slope does help to ensure all pitches get a view. If you're looking for good food nearby there are 5 pubs and a fish and chip shop within about a mile.  Our favourite is the Kings Arms in Seaton Sluice - nice atmosphere, good welcome and smashing food at really good prices.  Drink prices are reasonable too.  If you like mussels try their offering with Strongbow cider and English mustard - delicious.

A Great Site & Wardens.

We have stayed on this site twice in the last six weeks due to visiting a very sick relative in Whitley Bay and all I can say is " the site and wardens are excellent". Yes the site slopes so levelling blocks are required ( the warden has a vast supply of blocks to use) but the view is worth the extra setup time. The facilities are kept spotlessly clean and I personally can only use one loo at a time ! Because of the sloping nature of the site "kids on bikes" are not a problem either. So after a good walk in either direction from the site, Sit back relax and enjoy the forever changing view. Just what we needed. Also a big thank you to the wardens for the loan of their personal Compressor to top our tyres up. We'll definitely be back.

Very poor

This has to be the worst cc site we have ever stayed on.there are no level pitches and you will need several large blocks of wood just to get your caravan level. Only 1 toilet block consisting of 3 toilets 3 showers and 3 wash/shave areas (MENS). This site is not for me.
